Discussion about the Tager match-up goes here.

From jp Azrael Wiki / jbbs: Huge thanks to hakimiru for the major translation work!

Match start -

Backstep is a reliable opener, I think. 5C is tempting but it's a guaranteed ch if they forward jump, so it's better to get some distance first and retreat to the max range of 5C.

From here, Tager will slowly but steadily approach with walking and forward JC. If you see forward JC, use 2C, since it's sort of hard to AA with 5A like you can for other characters. 2C can be hit-confirmed into 6D/3D, etc. Going too far in is very dangerous. It should be fine though, since it's not too hard to confirm off of a Tager air-hit.

Once you've applied a weak point, be sure to properly meaty 5A on their emergency techs. If you're on-point with beating out their backsteps and A Drivers and can force them to block, a lot more options open up.

If they create some distance with backroll, etc, there's no need to overextend yourself to chase.

Going in with low airdash JB, etc, will lead to you getting AAed with 2A, so it's best to just zone and initiate with 5C.

If they manage to get you to block a 6C, it becomes a yomi match from there.

Their main options are pretty much just A Driver or GETB. Collider can probably be beaten out with a rising JA, but backstep is the option with the least risk.

Tager's moves generally have long recovery times, so I think it's best to bait his actions and punish with 5C.

If you see them do 6A or 2D/5D etc, you can backstep it for an easy 5C>Gustaf>rc>3C etc. punish.

Defending -

If you've made some sort of mistake and Tager is on the offensive, 5C doesn't chain into anything seamlessly, so you can backstep for free if you block one.

When magnetized, Tagers options after 5C are mainly 2D, 5D, and 6A.

Blocking 2D puts you in a heavily disadvantageous situation, so you'll want to dodge it with backstep. They're in crouching state on whiff, allowing you to go into full combo with 5B>3C>Dump>~

If you block a 5D, they're likely to do B Sledge, or A Sledge if you're close.

IBing the first hit guarantees you a ch to Hammer with 5A, so aim for that.

They can continue their blockstring with Sledge>rc>5B if they have meter, so be sure to check.

Getting hit with Gadget Finger -

Their only punish for our backstep is Driver, so we can get away after a Gadget easier than most.

Driver is a high-risk move due to how open it leaves them on whiff, so it's not something they'll throw out that often. Running away with backstep is probably the main option you'll be using.

Pressing up right after the backstep gives you a free combo if their throw comes out late, so that might be best.

After blocking a Wheel -

On ground block: CA

On air block: jump cancel. If you're out of air options, land>Growler

Things get pretty messy if you end up blocking a 6A or 2D, so be sure to counter them with backstep!

Sorry for the length.

Carl's gameplan comes down to using Nirvana to land attacks or setups while putting himself in as little danger as possible.

Carl has low health so in theory you only need to successfully combo him about 3 times, but this is easier said than done because of needing weakpoints first AND him bursting.

The worst possible situation to be in is when you're sandwiched between Carl and Nirvana. Pay very close attention to where they are on the screen and try to avoid this situation whenever possible. This is made harder by the fact that Carl players will purposely do things that entice you into going after him, which in turn causes you to be put in-between them.

If Carl manages to confirm a combo he will either knock you down into a setup or he will reset you into even more damage. Both of these things are hard to avoid and at times unblockable.

For some of Carl's setups you can actually backdash through Nirvana to avoid the mixup. The Carl player could eventually adjust to this, but it is something to consider.

Any time Carl goes for a setup you can take a gamble by using Growler Field (214B), if you hit Carl it should work and allow you to go back to neutral, if you hit Nirvana more than likely Carl is about to hit you in return. You're taking a risk by doing this.

One approach to this match-up is to be more passive aggressive than you might usually be in other match-ups. This is due to the fact that any time you are trying to get in and do damage you could be putting yourself into a dangerous position, like sandwiched in-between them.

Being fullscreen in this match-up isn't as bad as it sounds since you are at little risk of actually being hit as Carl's only "direct" fullscreen attack is Nirvana's projectile. Unfortunately certain Nirvana attacks will cause you to have to move into a different position since they will put neutral pressure on you, which the Carl player could be looking for, thus the sandwich.

Be careful when attacking Nirvana as the Carl player can attack you after you do so, which is also something he could be doing on purpose to bait you into it. Nirvana's 4D has armor, do not try to hit her out of this move like you might try the others.

In the corner Carl may do a setup involving Nirvana's projectile+Carl throw, if you see this you can try to absorb the projectile with Growler. Growler is NOT throw invul. however so I'm not sure it will work 100% of the time, the one time I saw it "work" for Azrael the Carl player didn't go for the throw. There might be some weird frame timing if that setup truly works because if Growler absorbs the projectile first he shouldn't be able to throw Azrael since Azrael is somewhat invul. during part of the projectile absorbing.

Arakune's one and only objective is to get curse, which leads to massive damage, great pressure, good oki for Arakune. This is what you want to avoid at all costs.

Because of the above you will have to "safely" chase Arakune down without getting put into full curse mode. At times it could benefit you to go through any curse clouds if it means putting pressure on Arakune, just as long as that cloud won't immediately put you into curse mode.

Arakune's Overdrive provides 100% curse when curse attacks hit or 50% on block, this is very dangerous for obvious reasons. Avoid him / everything if he does it outside of combos or else you will very likely be cursed.

Arakune lacks any meterless reversal options, if you knock him down do your best to capitalize on it.

Since one of the main tools Arakune has for getting curse is the curse cloud "Zero Vector" (j.236D), Arakune players will tend to be jumping around and in the air A LOT. Take this into consideration when attacking, particularly after knockdowns.

Azrael can absorb Arakune's bugs with Growler Field (214B), but you have to be careful that he doesn't purposely bait you into using it.

Effective usage of Phalanx Cannon (236B) can be hard since Arakune is in the air a lot and there aren't many instances when it is immediately useful.

Bursting can be important in this match as it can prevent Arakune from getting full curse while allowing you another attempt at trying to kill him before he does.

Most of the time Arakune shouldn't be able to kill you through one period of curse mode.

Try your best to not get hit by j.C during curse. It can be an instant overhead (and Fatal Counter) that leads to a big damage combo if it lands.

Discussion about the Bang match-up goes here.

Anyone is free to post info as long as it is constructive and helps with the discussion of the match-up.

Bang is a very momentum based character. If he gets in on you he's going to try and stay on top of you and try to mix you up until you die.

Bang doesn't really have "strong" oki tools to "force" you to block, unless he commits to using Steel Rain.

Bang does have strong mix-up options with multiple lows, highs, and a command grab if he does get you into a blocking situation.

Bang does not however get much off of regular crouching combos mid-screen or off his command grab.

Because Bang is a more offensive orientated character the match-up comes down to who can get the upper hand by forcing the opponent to block and getting a knock down. There would be less chasing Bang down compared to other characters since he needs to get in himself, so it is really a clash of who can win offensively at neutral.

All of Bang's Drives are punishable or will give the opponent (you) the advantage on block. 2D can be jump canceled or special canceled but none of those things can really harm you in most cases.

Bang's B-Nail know ricochets differently depending on where it hits, while D-Nails now allow him to retain momentum which means he can come in behind them easier but are no longer used in his pressure.

Bang has no reliable meterless anti-air, at best he will try to Air to Air you with j.A or hope to land 2D. With meter he does have "Ashura" (236236A) so pay attention to his meter, although it doesn't do much damage it can change the momentum of the match which is what Bang needs.

Bang has a new distortion that is a command grab which works on grounded or opponents in the air. He does however need all 4 seals for it to work. If you are on the ground and not doing anything you should be able to just jump. If you are in the air he will catch you unless you have an attack that hits behind you already out (j.B). The move becomes scary if he uses it during Overdrive.

Furinkazan is now Bang's Overdrive. You can expect much of the same stuff from it if you've played previous games, however each seal Bang has provides different "buffs" while he's in FRKZ. Try to not get knocked down or even put in blockstun if he is in FRKZ as it is very hard to block FRKZ mix-up and it leads to big damage.

Bang's 3C is a Fatal Counter, and he can get a ridiculous loop combo off it, consider bursting this if you get hit by it but not immediately.

Bang's Astral is UNBLOCKABLE and has full body guard point, Azrael can more than likely just back dash it on reaction. I expect that Azrael can not crouch a properly TK'd Bang Astral.

While Azrael could in theory absorb Bang's Nails with Growler Field (214B), because of the way they work it isn't likely to happen unless you just happened to do the move the same time he threw them out. The one exception being Steel Rain which takes forever to start-up and should be able to absorb easily.

From jbbs:

Azrael's whole gameplan revolves around getting in, applying a weakpoint, and doing big damage by using up those weakpoints.

Because of the above, you and your opponent both need multiple chances to attack each other to get any substantial damage.

Knowing the above makes it easier to know when to Burst, since it would be effective to burst when:
1) It prevents him from gaining any weakpoints.
2) He uses up meter and/or a weakpoint within the combo, possibly for a high damage combo.
Ex. Bursting Valiant combos, more so if he had to Rapid Cancel to go into it.

If the Azrael player is trying to be cute by doing Hornet or Valiant outside of combos just block and punish for massive damage, they are very - on block.

Azrael has a very good back dash which is hard to punish in most cases and can get out of Azrael's own basic pressure easily. If you expect him to back dash, consider using Gustaf (236A) or 6C to possibly catch him or to put pressure on again.

Azrael has a meterless reversal with Growler Field (214B), it is very punishable on block and you can also throw him out of it. Scud Punishment (214214D) can also be a reversal sometimes but it isn't as effective and is still hugely punishable on block.

5BB, 6C, Gustaf (236A), and Sentinel Dump (623C) are notable moves that are + on block, do not try to press a button after them.

There is always a chance Azrael will do a cross-through mixup with his forward dash, keep it in mind. Throws should be able to catch him out of it.

"No Teching / Late Teching" against Azrael can be dangerous because it might allow him to get an additional weakpoint or a weakpoint in general which means his next combo will do big damage.

Azrael's dive kick, j.2C, can not be combo'd after on raw hit so make sure to tech or else he'll get free damage + weakpoint.

Azrael can EASILY combo into his Astral Heat (632146C) and it can be used as a reversal, be careful.

One of the major points of Amane is that he can do insane chip damage or barrier draining.

A lot of Amane's attacks have good range, in addition to his mobility options the fight comes down to chasing Amane down while trying to get in to avoid his ranged attacks and chip damage.

Amane does not have a meterless reversal, be aggressive after knockdowns.

Azrael can use Growler Field (214B) to absorb Amane's drill oki if they go for it and gain multiple Phalanx Cannons (236B).

Use any Phalanx Cannons (236B) wisely. Don't use it immediately after getting it because it is obvious, like Tager players itching to use Spark Bolt. Since Amane has a lot of long range attacks you can use it to catch him off guard or even punish them on reaction (presumably) and combo into Black Hawk Stinger.

About the OP notes, his chip moves are 5D and j.D mainly, while is is true that they technically do less if you take the hit as opposed to blocking if he has lvl3, you have to keep in mind they are normals and are cancellable on hit and can go into a full combo for 5k+ if he has lvl3 so i wont advise getting purposely hit. It can be worth it if your barrier is about to run out to save it but it depends on the Amane coz if they can react faster enough and see that they 5D/j.D hit they can covert to a lot of damage.

They arent cancellable on block though (which is why you see Amane usually do 5D (blocked) RC 5D again) so unless they RC you have some breathing room to backdash/jump/do whatever. Another option is to use Growler and absorb it and technically avoid both the hit and chip damage but if they bait that you're eating a hefty combo.

Amane's 2A/5A have no reach so you use 5BB,5C,3C and other stuff and frametraps quite often as he cant try to "poke out" of your pressure.

He also has no overheads aside from j.A (which sucks) so you can block low with no worries.

Amane will usually throw out a 5C if he thinks you'll try to jump/IAD in and that whiffs on crouchers so you can gustaf/dash in if you bait that out. Once he notices you're crouching they'll start using 2C more and you can IAD that for a full combo, he can 5D in that range as well but you can use growler to absorb that and in that range you have more options and you're too close for his C normals to hit you.

so yeah its a lot of reads and baiting but its kinda tough to get in depending on the Amane's style.
