Buffs

5B attack level up: 5B 5C is now tight even on IB
5C > 6B gatling added
5B > 3C gatling added
CT is much faster: 3C > uncharged CT combos
Anima can now catch airborne opponents
2C is jump cancellable on block and hit. 2C, sj.A, stuff is a combo. Corner 2C, CT still works even without wall bounce
j.C has more untech time
j.B increased attack level
4D has super armor
4D is a fatal counter
SMP removed, penalty is much more lenient and doesn’t affect hitstun [universal system change]
6D slide on ground hit removed. Still slides on air hit.
3D attack level up
Brio has more wallstick time [unconfirmed]
Cantabile is much faster now, further range 5C > cantabile is more consistent
OD Super gives hard KD again

new 6C: hopping overhead. High 20s frame startup. Special cancellable. Ground bounces on air hit. Carl can’t link normals on this 6C unlike previous games. Unsafe on block.

Tenerezza/4D does 1 hit only

Volante makes a buzzing sound the entire time it’s out. Think of the buzzing sound that George makes

Due to the flexible nature of Carl's combos, this post is not a definitive list of combos and only contains sample combos. The second post will contain possible combo routes. Please keep in mind that this thread is a work in progress.

j.214C immediately after j.2C hits/is blocked by opponent. This is different from [j.C, j.214C], where j.214C is actually performed

Enders

Carl can end his combos in a few ways depending on how much heat he has and the kind of oki he wants.

- 3C: Sets up oki
- 3C, Fermata: Non-OD super damage. Adds 900 minimum damage. 50 meter required.
- 3C, OD, 3C, 632146D: OD super ender. Add 1500 minimum damage. 50 meter and OD required. You can go straight into 3C, 632146D if you're already in OD.
- 8D into nothing: Sets up emergency tech. Unlike 3C, this gives you more time to set up oki and as such, more complete setups such as safe jumps are possible from this.
- Astral (64641236D): You can generally can combo into astral anytime you can combo into fermata.

The positioning required for a given combo will be indicated by an arrangement of letters:
C- Carl
N- Nirvana
O- Opponent
W- Wall/Corner

The ordering of the letters will indicate Nirvana's position in relation to Carl and his opponent.

Examples:
C-N-O: Carl-Nirvana-Opponent. This indicates that the combo's starting position is when Nirvana is between Carl and the opponent.
N-C-O: Nirvana-Carl-Opponent. The starting position is Nirvana being behind Carl.
C-O-N: Carl-Opponent-Nirvana. The opponent is between Carl and Nirvana

Recommended combos:

These combos are recommended due to their damage, resource efficiency and/or overall difficulty. These are by no means the only combos you're limited to but rather serve as solid go-to-combos for whatever situation that may arise. Note that anything off a jump-in j.A can generally lead to a 2A combo while jump-in j.B/C can go into a 5B starter combo.

Preparing for cpe... in cse?

Hey guys,

I'm on pc so I have to wait just a little bit longer to finally get cpe. I main Litchi, but I always wanted to be able to have at least a decent Carl as my first or second sub, however the steep learning curve combined with cse being outdated discouraged me from finally picking him up so far. I could do the first 9 out of his 15 challenges until I decided it's probably not worth it to grind some more with him.

So.... simple question: Does it even make sense to get a feel for the character in cse to have an easier time learning him in cpe? Or is he too much of a different character in those 2 versions?

As many of you, my fellow Carl players, are aware, we possess a UB reset that is safe from all supers and UB resets. While we may not be punishable, if the opponent Dp’s, we are forced to block which leaves us susceptible to being pressured if the opponent has 50heat. Applying a theory, inspired by SKD’s own idea, which utilizes your opponent’s frame window, this can allow you to OS their options on wake-up. Elaborating a bit more, this setup combines the use of any safe jump, specifically our UB reset, with vivace to avoid possible reversal options.

To do this, combine the input for Carls unblockable reset j2c>ja>ja>jb/jc During this time do not use ada. During the Ja>ja release the D button, and then, instead of doing 3D simply allow Ada to turn off; in order to get Vivace B immediately after pressing JB input 236B. If done correctly, you should have completed the input for Vivace, and pressed the B-button after the 236 input, during the active frames of JB (As soon as the JB connects with the opponent). If the JB whiffs(Forced to miss due to invincibility frames from either a super or DP), Carl will Vivace and be completely safe.

“Well gosh Akira, it’s nice that you can make the DP whiff but, what if they don’t DP? Ada won’t be able to cover us and we won’t get a UB reset.” This is only partially correct. While it is true that you do lose the ability, to perform the UB reset you do not lose the ability to continue pressure. Actually , more mix up options open up for Carl at this point. Always, always always!!!!! Press 2a>2a(hold D), the reason for this is that if you have done Vivace, the timing for the press of the D button in order to avoid potential DP’s will be the same. If you have done Jb/Jc>2a>2a(Hold D) because the opponent did not use a DP, then you will need to react within the time of doing the 2a>2a(hold D); then perform the following string. 5a(2D)>5a>2B>5B>6B>2D.

If you haven’t already guessed if the opponent tries to attack you, even on IB’ing a 5-frame 5a from the opponent will trade with 2D. All DP’s will be blockable, so simply hold down-back after 6B. Some opponents may get opened up by this pathetic excuse of a ‘Hard to blockable’ setup, so pay attention! If the opponent blocked this 2D, you have the option to go into a Ja fuzzy; which will lead into an UB reset or RIGHT BACK INTO THE SAME SITUATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is a potential loop into death. Since Ada will be turned off with each repetition you will conserve meter. The only option for the opponent to escape would be to potentially eat the 2D and get combo’ed.

“Oh cool!! That sounds really nice Akira but, what if they just DP me? If I use vivace that puts a very large distance between us and we both recover around the same time. So why would they ever not DP?” Do you remember that part where I said always hold down the D button during the same time? If you do this, Ada will turn on Mid Vivace. By reacting to the vivace, you can attack using Ada to punish with either Anima (Fatal 4.5K meterless) oki or, if you find Anima starter to difficult you can go into Tenerezza and apply a 66-jump JC to follow up the combo(Assuming here, didn’t test this route because it’s clearly less optimal).

Please remember, the requirement for this situation is that you can properly safe jump the opponent. Therefore characters that have special attacks or supers with frame 1 super armor, such as Tager's MTW DD or Noel's Fanrir DD which stop the safe jump, will stop this setup completely. There is a time and place for everything; characters that lack reversal options would get hit regardless, so there is no essential need to do the JB/JC vivace OS. But you can still preform the safe jump setup and exclude Ada's 3D to utilize the setup and potentially go back into the Jb/Jc safe jump loop.

This, more or less, sums up the theory that I was going for. The concept is that if the opponent truly wishes to escape they must juggle the option of either DP’ing and eating the 4.5k combo or eating the 2D OH from the follow up option. Keep in mind, this does make utilizing 50 heat to loop into another reset worth the heat. Please post any comments, questions or concerns; this situation may still have holes in them so lets work together to plug those holes. Good luck my Carl players, and GODSPEED!!!!!!!!!

Edit- Alright, after a quick conversation, backdashing on frame 1 will allow the person to escape and punish Carl completely. However, there is a way to interrupt this, by simply replacing the Vivace with the current setup with your own backdash and leaving Ada on. This setup will still function fundamentally the same. But slightly better for spacing and punishing. Please be aware, this setup should be used interchangably with your UB Jc/4D reset. As time progresses, I believe creating character specific setups will be necessary.

Changelog

System Changes

SMP: The effects of SMP has been increased. For example, if two 8Ds are used in a combo, the opponent can tech almost immediately after the second 2D.
OD: The burst system has been reworked into the overdrive system. Carl's OD effect is that Ada becomes powered up; some of her moves have new properties, have shortened recovery and she gains access to a new DD. It seems that SMP is negated during OD.

5A: 5A can cancel into itself once
2A: 2A can cancel into itself once
6A: Does not launch on ground hit.
5B: No longer jump cancellable on block
6B: Causes spin on counter hit like Hakumen's 6D counter
5C: Has more hitstun (Unconfirmed), now jump cancellable on block
3C: The enemy is launched higher, still air-untechable. 3C into Fermata combos. No longer jump cancelable on hit.
Crush Trigger (5A+B): New move. Has reasonable startup and can be used in combos. Staggers on ground hit and floor bounces on air hit. Has SMP.
Cantabile (623C): Has higher base damage (1200 dmg) but no longer does 100% of its base damage in combos. Carl can no longer do a meterless solo follow up off this move.
Allegretto (j.214C): .Has corner bound properties, recovery has been reduced and allegretto pushes Carl back more.
Cantata (632146C): Minimum damage nerfed to 400. Launches at a downward trajectory, making it harder to combo off in a corner.
Overdrive: During OD he has access to Relius's DD Val Tedo
Astral: Completely changed. No longer the old time bomb super, it's now an actual attack that's similar to Relius's AH. Can be comboed into from 3C so it's a bit more practical now

Ada
Health: Ada's health amount is the about the same as EX. Her life recovery happens sooner but she takes more damage from attacks (needs confirmation)
6D: 6D causes sliding knockdown on air hit.
2D: The bounce from 2D has been 'fixed'; the apex of the bounce on air hit is the same height as that of the bounce on ground hit
8D: SMP has been increased.
3D: Causes floor bounce on aerial and grounded opponents. This means no more loopable UBs.
4D: Has a lot less Super Armor (unconfirmed). 4D no longer sends the opponent flying across the screen; instead it launches them upwards. The second hit of 4D causes spin on ground hit.
Brio (623D): Does one hit and has less hitstun.
Volante (421D): Launches on ground hit
La Tenerezza (46D): New move. Resembles a faster version of 4D with the reach of 6D. Useful as a poke, combo tool, can be combined with backdash for a pseudo-reversal. Has a vacuum effect on standing hit and causes floor bounce on air hit. Overall a very good move.
Anima (63214D): No longer a command grab, it's now a regular attack that can be comboed into. Knocks the opponent down, can be followed up. Now a fatal counter.
Fermata(214214D): Faster startup; j.2C into Fermata is a combo.
Val Tedo (632146D): New move. Carl's OD super is functionally identical to Relius' Val Tedo. 1.5k min damage

Has anyone yet labbed how nirvana now behaves in BBCEX?

Which moves still push through if carl is blocking? Does conbrio do this? Which moves other than supers still continue doing it's thing if carl blocks or gets hit?

Carl CP2 Loketest Changes:

Loketest 1 (Aug 7-10)

- Carl 2D has more startup

- Carl 3D is no longer a low, does 6 hits

- OD Cantata does 2343 damage

- j.C groundbounces, causes soft KD

- j.B attack level reduced

- CT has less untech time: float is way too low to do long combos.

- Opponent falls faster after Brio wallstick; much harder to follow up Brio

- CT > 46[D] > Lv2 6C doesn't work anymore

- Throw > cOD > Fermata does 3k

- Opponents can air tech Fermata

- All jump cancels on block are gone

- OD 4D is supposedly weak to 3 hit (multi-hitting?) moves

Allecan: j.214C immediately after j.2C hits/is blocked by opponent. This is different from [j.C, j.214C], where j.214C is actually performed

Enders: Carl can end his combos in a few ways depending on how much heat he was and the kind of oki he wants.

- 3C: Sets up oki
- 3C, Fermata: Non-OD super damage. Adds 900 minimum damage. 50 meter required.
- 3C, OD, 3C, 632146D: OD super ender. Add 1500 minimum damage. 50 meter and OD required. You can go straight into 3C, 632146D if you're already in OD.
- 8D into nothing: Sets up emergency tech. Unlike 3C, this gives you more time to set up oki and as such, more complete setups such as safe jumps are possible from this.
- Astral (64641236D): You can generally can combo into astral anytime you can combo into fermata.

The positioning required for a given combo will be indicated by an arrangement of letters:
C- Carl
N- Nirvana
O- Opponent
W- Wall/Corner

The ordering of the letters will indicate Nirvana's position in relation to Carl and his opponent.

Examples:
C-N-O: Carl-Nirvana-Opponent. This indicates that the combo's starting position is when Nirvana is between Carl and the opponent. Often interchaneable with N-C-O
N-C-O: Nirvana-Carl-Opponent. The starting position is Nirvana being behind Carl. This won't be too different from C-N-O most of the time and as such is often interchangeable with C-N-O
C-O-N: Carl-Opponent-Nirvana. The opponent is between Carl and Nirvana

Recommended combos:

Carl has a dizzying number of combo routes and variations of such. Since it can be hard to know which routes should be done in each situation, I created a list of practical combos for use in various situations. These combos are recommended due to their damage, resource efficiency and/or overall difficulty. These are by no means the only combos you're limited to but rather serve as solid go-to-combos for whatever situation that may arise. Note that anything off a jump-in j.A can lead to a 2A combo while jump-in j.B/C can go into a 5B starter combo.

Welcome to the Carl video thread. We hope that you enjoy this collection of our favorite preadolescent vigilante taking on the world.

Most of the videos are taken directly from jourdal's and pktazn's YT channels. If you find a video that's not from either of those channels and are not repostings of their videos, please post them onto this thread and I'll update it as time goes by. Excerpts from a-cho videos in particular are much appreciated.

[CP] Carl tech + gimmicks thread

I kinda realized that we don't really have a thread to share our cute little tricks and such so I'm making one right now. I'm not going to police this thread like I am with the video thread but please try to not go off on too big of a tangent, guys. Discussion is okay but don't go off track too much (that's what we have general discussion for).

I'll update the OP with random tech that people have contributed as time goes by.

Mixups

Crossunder w/normals

- Here's some crossunder tech from Pen_Ninja (confirmed to work in CP)

Fuzzy guard

- This is quite simple. If the opponent blocks a deep j.B/C from Carl, Carl can do a dashing rising j.A for a fuzzy overhead (and maybe j.B against bigger opponents). A lot of the time, this can be converted into a full combo although you may have to use some unorthodox combo routes to make this happen.

- This also works if the opponent blocks 2D, in which case, Carl can do rising j.A/B for the fuzzy.

- This video showcases some fuzzy setups

Volante Tick Throw

- Volante has very low hitstun and can be used to set up tick throws

Corner cross-ups

- Carl can use the vacuum effect of Tenerezza (46D) to pull opponents from the corner, giving him access to corner crossups. Tenerezza is the only known way to set this up so be careful to not be too telegraphed when using this.

Oki

Unblockable Oki

- This is best done in the corner. Off a knockdown, use fuoco as oki and then charge 6C as soon as you can. The fuoco will hold them down and allow you to get the full charge for the 6C unblockable. If your opponent doesn't emergency tech and opts to rolls away from the corner, fuoco will catch them and you can release 6C for the groundbounce into a prorated combo. Note that characters with reversals beat this very easily so be wary about doing this setup against those characters.

Volante Oki

- Throw out volante over your opponent as they emergency tech for a meaty oki setup. You can also throw in a 2B to catch rollers and non-techers. For some reason, this setup allows for doing green throws despite it being a meaty setup, giving Carl a unique okizeme option that most characters don't have.

Other stuff

Carl dash momentum cancel

- Carl can cancel the first 5-6 frames of his dash into an attack or a jump. One thing to note from this is that Carl retains his forward momentum from the dash if he does this. As such, this can either be used with his attacks to give them a bit more range or with his jumps to give him a horizontally quicker jump and give him a new angle to approach from in the air.

Wake up doll reversal

- Carl can control his doll while he's teching and give her inputs even before his invincibility frames end. As such, if Carl is knocked down and Ada is right next to the opponent, Carl can tech, input Brio and the Brio comes out even if Carl is hit. This is especially powerful if Nirvana is facing the corner as if the opponent is hit, he'll bounce off the corner and you can then confirm into a damaging combo thanks to Brio's low proration. If the opponent respects your "reversal" and blocks the brio, Carl will recover in time to continue pressure, making this an extremely strong if not somewhat situational defensive option. This also works with Tenerezza, which is a good alternative against opponents who can pressure you while low profiling the Brio.

Silenced Volante

- Anytime Carl does Volante, he always shouts out the name of the move. If Carl uses a move that makes him produce a sound during the "startup" of Volante's audio cue, the rest of the Volante shout is cancelled out by the sound of the move Carl did. This can be utilised with offscreen volantes to great effect.

- Note that Carl has to do some kind of move to cancel the Volante shout. A whiffed normal from Carl with Nirvana offscreen could potentially act as a tell against acute opponents.

Dashing Allegretto

- Since Carl's forward dash puts him in a midair state, if 214C is performed early enough during the dash, Carl can perform Allegretto in the middle of a dash, giving him access to a surprisingly far-reaching poke. If the opponent blocks the allegretto, you can RC it to create a 50/50 in which you can either do j.A during the short amount of time Carl falls down or simply do 2A when he lands.

Nee-san's last stand

- If Nirvana uses up the rest of her energy to perform a move, it will not be interrupted if Carl blocks, is hit or techs a throw/gets his throw teched. One trick you can do with this is to set up a pseudo clap loop setup where you purple throw a mid-air opponent while doing an 8D close to them. If they tech the throw but forget to air barrier, they will get hit by the air-UB 8D and you can follow up with a solo air combo. Not extremely useful but it's a fun gimmick to throw out if the chance presents itself.
