Baron Samedi Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 Hello everyone, this is my first post. I apologize if this has somehow been covered; I entirely expected that it would have been but multiple and varied searchings haven't turned much up for me. While it's obviously impossible to conduct some kind of census of all Guilty Gear players, and even more difficult to define precisely the borders between casual at-home/salaryman-after-work-at-the-arcade play, more competitive play, and 'professional' play, there's obviously some sense that some characters - regardless of tier ranking - are simply more popular and oft-played than others. Given that, what would the enlightened denizens of Dustloop consider to be the most popular/frequently played characters in Guilty Gear? I would imagine this would probably have some geographical differentiation (mainly between Japan, the rest of E/SE Asia, and everywhere else, I would guess), and that might complicate matters. Nonetheless, what would you suggest as a 'tier list' for most popular characters? From the paltry little I know - from being a lurker on these forums for a few weeks, watching GG^ videos, and playing in the arcades in Tokyo while I was studying abroad - I feel like it's something like this: S: Jam, Sol, Testament A: HOS, Johnny, Ky, Slayer B: Baiken, Chipp, Eddie, Faust, May, Millia, Potemkin, Venom C: A.B.A., Anji, Axl, Robo-Ky D: Dizzy, Zappa, I-No F: Bridget (don't think I ever played against even ONE) The idea here is at around 'B', it's neither surprising nor tiresome to see that character pop up. At around C, it's a bit of a treat because you don't see those players that much at all. The real black swan here is obviously Johnny as far as tiers go. I felt like he was everywhere in the arcades. Input?
sogos Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 Input? thread sucks edit: every character gets played in both a casual and tourney environment; that is the beauty of guilty gear
Baron Samedi Posted November 3, 2009 Author Posted November 3, 2009 thread sucks edit: every character gets played in both a casual and tourney environment; that is the beauty of guilty gear So there's just as many Bridget or I-No players as there are Sol or Jam players? and Hi-C, no, I was just thinking of a post I saw somewhere where someone mentioned that people in the U.S. don't go up against Faust nearly as much as Faust gets played in Japan, and remembered myself a fair number of Fausts over there. But haven't been to any arcades with GG back in US. Thinking that the frequency of characters could be different based on geographical location just based on largescale trends in taste.
rtl42 Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 Relative to other characters played by people in Japan, Faust is rare imho... but the thing is, there are WAY WAY more Japanese GG players, so your perception may have been misled by the raw/absolute number of Japanese Faust players, rather than the relative number of Japanese Faust players.
EdWORLD Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 Slayer should be like, S+++++++++++++++++++++++++++. Hates it.
