I will be the Dustloop rep and will be running the BB tournament so feel free to ask any questions.

All games are on Xbox 360, that includes BB.

Well this is the final stretch, Schedule's finalized and hopefully at least one of you guys out of the few hundred views are coming so this thread didn't go to waste. =(

Top 4 BB will be on stream on Sunday and we might steal a few matches on the main stage before the main tournaments the day before.

But I'm not sure when exactly they're going to be on stream and whether or not it warrants a stream on front page request.

If anyone's still interested in watching, Vesper Arcade will be streaming the the event.

Also, BB is going to be on 360.

I'll probably have an extra BYOC BB station on PS3 after side tourneys end.

And if anyone cares, it's snowing in Calgary.

$60 as a venue base is rather steep for people going in for the side tourneys... =/. I can understand for the highlight fighting games, but are people willing to pay on average (between early bird registration to onsite) ~$50 + $10/game to play a considerably smaller pool of non mainstream fighters? I know this isn't at you, but just saying, lol.

I live in Calgary, and was anticipating on showing up since announcement of it being held here. However, I still can't get my mind over the fact that Canada Cup is making people pay an extremely high amount considering its not, or at least I don't feel it, as big as EVO or other big tourneys across North America. I'm still thinking about entering or not, but again (sorry for repetition), the money is a hard thing to simply spend.

Also, more of a personal question, how many BB players is expected to show up? And I could use a clarification, spectators must pay the venue fee as well?

Thanks for the post, and future posts.

I just want to relay a couple stories about my last experience at Canada Cup. I'll start by saying that I had a lot of fun last year. Despite the problems I ran into, it was fun getting to play a lot of different people, especially in a game that not very many people play. I got in a lot of entertaining casuals, and was looking forward to coming back this year. Unfortunately, some of the decisions made in running the tournament have me turned off the event, so much so that I don't think I'll be attending.

My first story is about a father and son who were just behind me in the queue to enter the main hall last year. The father was probably in his late twenties, his son maybe seven or eight years old. The father may or may not have been entering one of the tournaments, but the son definitely wasn't, and his dad was just bringing him along to have some fun and enjoy the event. The father asked at the door if he would have to pay entry for his son, who was just there to watch, and was told that yes, he had to pay the then $25 venue fee. Reluctantly, the father pulled out his wallet and tossed down the extra $25 to get his son into the event. The kid wasn't there to enter the tourney, he wasn't even there to meet a bunch of people and get in some casuals; he was just out for a day with his dad. Originally, the $25 venue fee seemed to me like one of the most common issues people had with the event, and yet this year they've raised the at-the-door venue fee all the way up to $60! For that same father and son to get in again this year, he'd have to put down $120 in venue fees alone! Personally, I feel this is WAY too steep for a tournament, especially when I have little to no interest in the highlight games.

This next story relates to how the organisers don't seem to be paying much attention to how the event went last year, at least not for games that aren't the primary focus, like BlazBlue. The BlazBlue tournament itself got hit REALLY hard by their decision to play it on the 360 rather than the PS3. At the time, I was still playing on pad, and as anyone who has ever dared to torture themselves so knows, the d-pad on the 360 controller is a joke. There weren't a lot of people in BlazBlue to begin with, and losing many of our pad warriors instantly definitely didn't help at all. We did however have a PS3 setup for casuals, so these players (including myself) were at least able to get in some good matches. The most unfortunate part of it though is that there was one really strong Lambda pad warrior on the PS3 setup who no one was able to take down. However, since the actual tournament was on 360, he went 0 and 2 and was out in the blink of an eye. From how it turned out last year, the 360 is definitely the wrong console to be holding this game on, yet this has been completely disregarded.

All I'm really looking for from a tournament is a place to get together with some other players and enjoy the game and the company. Considering that the organisers of Canada Cup don't seem at all concerned with the biggest issues I had with the event last year, I don't feel that they deserve the now $50-60 venue fee they're charging. Honestly, if we could just have a bunch of players gather in someone's basement, set up a few consoles, and toss in a bit for a prize pot and some pizzas, that'd be just as enjoyable.

Sorry if I sound kinda butthurt, but thinking about Canada Cup this year has me pretty salty.

PS- Yay for PS3

One of the things we were trying to accomplish with the increase of venue prices was to provide incentive for people to register early so we can plan out as far head of time as possible. Although yes I do agree the price may seem steep for people who aren't there for the main events but that just provides us more incentive to get our scene more noticed. CCG's also not pulling any punches for the venue, Markman(of madcatz) will be setting up booth there along with other vendors, raffles will be drawn, the stream is going to be flawless, etc.

All I can ask for now is to go out and just support our local scene, Calgary's still relatively small scale and CCG's has been working non stop to get us put on the map. If it wasn't for Canada Cup last year we probably wouldn't have even known there was a BB scene in the city. In the past couple of months though, I've managed to make some noise in the Calgary SRK thread to spread the awareness that there is a BB community in Calgary and now we have some set ups at Calgary HQ (a place that was opened up in summer for Calgary's FG community to get together and play locally outside of tubby dogs) so i'm hoping that we can get more BB players to crawl out of their shells and come out and play!

Last year we had only 12 people in the BB tourney, this year we have at least 16 pre-reg'd last time I checked so our scene's actually growing!

I'm sorry you feel that way Jordan but we're slowly making some advances. The reason why the Xbox was chosen was for us have a strict standard due to our ambitious and tight schedule this year. With a single console standard we won't have to waste time swapping consoles out in stations and worry about making judgment calls in console timing. The pitch for using PS3 was definitely there though and it wasn't an easy choice, but in the end CCG bit the bullet and decided to update the consoles and just buy the DLC for multiple consoles.

Last year was the first tournament they ever ran so hiccups were to be expected. I was pretty pissed too, they seriously decided who was going to run the BB tournament the night before, that's why I volunteered to run BB this year. They're definitely putting 1000% of their effort into making the tournament run much smoother this year though so please look forward to it!

As quoted from Canada Cup's website,

"Q: Can I just buy the venue fee and register for my games at the tournament?

A: Given the tight time restrictions that we have the weekend of this year's Canada Cup, we will only be allowing players to register for the afternoon games the day of the tournament (Marvel vs Capcom 3 and SSF4: AE) The morning games must be registered for online at this time. This means if you are interested in playing SF3, BBCS2, Tekken and HDR register in advance.

Circumstances permitting we may reconsider and allow registration on Friday night, but this is a big IF."

Does it imply that I'm no longer given the option to register now? And I can assume based on dummyacct7's history with last year, that there is still a spectator fee in place.

Going with your reply, I do want to support the scene and the community. It's just a hard pill to swallow with how everything is as of right now. We'll see, I'm more convinced to trying to make an appearence, but don't get your hopes up D=.

Thanks again,

60$? Wow, and I thought I complained about some of the venue fees here :/.

Sucks about the pad problems too, but hey, there are some good converters for the 360.

Anyways, I'm not attending the event, but I want to wish you guys the best of luck, and hope you guys have no troubles running a good BB tourney. Much respect to anyone who shows their sole support for this game in spite of the price.

I look forward to checking out what the west has to offer. Love from the east coast.

Good luck fending off Tokido if Tokido's joining the tourney.

Two guys from the Winnipeg scene are entering BB, so I hope everything runs smoothly with regards to the BB tournament this year.

Really looking forward to meeting fellow Canadian BB players! Thanks for the support!

Haha sorry about that, it looks like the Q&A hasn't been updated; my schedule in my first post is up to date!

We will still be accepting early registrations tomorrow at 8pm-10pm AND registration on site for side tourneys the next morning at 8AM - 9:30AM

Also, I think that if you still pre reg tomorrow night, the venue fee might be $50 still instead of $60. Don't quote me on that.

EDIT: the spectator fee is the venue fee, you're essentially paying for all the services at the venue

Yea i've seen some of the drama that happened because of the T12 venue fees. lol

Although still pretty expensive, the original venue fee was $40 for early birds

I don't think Tokido's pre reg'd in BB but he just arrived tonight so anything can still happen. If he doesn't join i'll pay him to beat me MM him.

I wish I could have gone, but computers cost a lot to build, and the two I would've carpooled with just didn't have the money for it.

[insert long, random, epic story to how it all started]

===

Saturday November 5th

Dacidbro started up a Catherine Tournament at Canada Cup ~10pm. Brackets began around 11pm

16 people got in, if I do recall correctly.

Rules set by Dacidbro, ie., Initial Map Selection, Banned Maps.

Casuals and Brackets were held in the Canada Cup designated room, while Finals were forced to being held at Dacid's hotel room.

Gotta say, the hype was just incredible. Also not only was the Catherine Tourney was being held, it was also the end of Street Fighter 4 brackets and into International teams. More hype dog.

Unfortunately, I couldn't make it to today's part of the entire event, so hopefully someone can fill what happened today.

TaiyakiTime

-PS being blown up in Blazblue lol, although it gives me more confidence and enthusiasm to practice harder after knowing more people in what I believed was an empty BlazBlue Community in Canada. Grats to the winners of BlazBlue, and I hope to see everyone again in one way or another for another set of matches.
