"Meet Your Mod" Episode 13: LordKnight

This Week:

LordKnight

(note that this interview is a couple months old, so you'll have to forgive the lack of CS2 talk)

Why did you choose that particular handle, is there a story or reference you'd like to explain?

I'm a big Fire Emblem fan. Originally I went as Blade Lord Lyn (people called me BLL) but I got confused for a girl a lot. When I went Smashboards for the first time, I recently finished Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu, so I picked the class of my favorite character (Sigurd, he's a fucking boss), and stuck with it ever since.

- What is your background with fighting games...Did you start with BB or are your OG like SFII?

Melee was my first competitve game. My friends at school were the ones that got me into Melty Blood (back then it was AC PS2/React) and GG#R PC, where I played May and Johnny. Originally I thought MB was just a trash game and put a bit of time into GG. Once I saw the MBAC Ver A SBO dvd, I changed my mind real fast and started playing Melty a lot.

- What competitive scene are you involved with? (Ranbats, Arcades, XBL, PSN, Reload Online etc.) Would you elaborate the benefits of this particular scene?

I'm a bit isolated, so I travel a lot to play. I netplay a lot (before it was MBAC, now BB). Doing all this, I think it's best not to completely dedicate yourself to just one venue (don't just be a netplayer, don't just play your local friends, etc). Although IRL play is DEFINITELY the best, netplay shouldn't be overlooked. However if you play just locally all the time, try netplaying or traveling. The most fun I've had playing is outside my region, because it really puts my strategies to the test (instead of me just memorizing people's styles from playing them over and over). It was the same when I started playing against the PSN guys.

- How strong do you feel your nation is as a whole, what is the next step to strengthening it?

Our good players are good. The midlevel players are comparatively pretty poor. Information needs to be shared, matchups need to be discussed (everyone hates Litchi, but the matchup discussion hasn't moved for months, why?). I feel like the split between GG and BB players hurts the community as a whole as well, who cares about "BB is bad, GG is perfect" or whatever, everyone should try to help everyone out. BB is a lot of people's first real game, so by showing people what it takes to play properly and strengthen America's skill level as a whole.

- Which player(s) give you the most trouble and why?

There's no one who I'd say particularly gives me trouble - there's a good size group of fun to play people.

- What has been the most helpful tool while growing stronger in BB?

A variety of things, but most notably was my 4 am sit down with Garu and Chou's question thread on bbs. Both of these insights not only just gave me a bit more (in Chou's case, a LOT more) knowledge about their respective games, but also helped me restructure the way I think when I play.

- Is there anything you'd like to share regarding your respective character or Dustloop in general?

Although there's a lot to learn, Litchi rewards you for your effort. Even though she's the best, you'll still lose all the time if you don't learn matchups, so make sure to hit up the matchup boards and do your best! You have to make use of all of her tools in order to be really successful with her. Stop focusing so much on combos (which you can just practice) and get into the knitty-gritty of strategy - that's something you can learn from GG.

    • I played a bit of the alpha and it was really enjoyable! It had a really nice movement feel to it that a lot of newer games just don't have anymore.   They've also seemed to change a lot of minor things that made things feel weird, like hit/block sounds. Azula was also an incredibly cool reveal
    • i'm excited that it has regional pricing, going to give it a try for that alone. haven't been in any of the betas though so don't really know what to expect
    • I'm pretty interested, most of the stuff I've I've seen looks interesting, I'm just worried it'll flame out on launch like dnf duel did so I've kind of been keeping my distance.
    • As of a few days ago, every character (except Sailor Uranus...) has a starter guide written! Pluto was the last to be added as she's undergoing some advancements thanks to a dedicated main of her named Virus. Thanks to O-RANGE, Inva, Legs, BowserBrowser, kan kan mikan and Virus for writing for their characters! While there's still a lot we have to cover in characters advanced strategy, this is an amazing point to get to. There's never been a better time to get into the game!
    • Makes sense, playing for popularity. Out of curiosity, what "metatextual level"s do you think the "simple" games come across as?
