"Meet Your Mod" Episode 21: furix

Guest

This Week: furix

Why did you choose that particular handle, is there a story or reference you'd like to explain?

I've had this handle for... Maybe 11 or 12 years now? I forget, but I remember I was signing up for GameFAQs, and I was like 13 years old. I ended up typing a bunch of letters at random... then erasing a few here and there... Until I eventually came up with this. I looked at it, thought it sounded neat, and just rolled with it. I've been using it for a long time, but I often like to sign up with other handles in other forums and for tournaments.

What is your background with fighting games...Did you start with BB or are your OG like SFII?

I have been playing fighting games since I was like 5 years old. I started with Street Fighter 2... or maybe Art of Fighting, I don't remember. But back then there was NeoGeo machines at every corner store. So I used to spend days and weeks just playing everything there. I remember we used to have little tournaments for like 50 cents, or "Soda matches" where the loser has to buy a soda and some chips.

What competitive scene are you involved with? (Ranbats, Arcades, XBL, PSN, Reload Online etc.) Would you elaborate the benefits of this particular scene?

Well... I've been sort of withdrawn from the scene lately. I mostly play in the South Texas region, but I've been traveling a lot less than usual. Now days I just play on PSN a lot(and mainly just SSF4AE). I still do play a lot of fighters, I sorta play everything(I am the misc. fighters mod after all!). The scene down here seems to just play nothing but AE and MvC3, I probably should pay more visits to Austin.

How strong do you feel your nation is as a whole, what is the next step to strengthening it?

The nation as a whole? I will take this question as a whole as in every fighter combined. I think that fighting games are coming back to a main stream now thanks to games like Street Fighter 4 and Marvel vs Capcom 3. Thanks to that, a lot of new players have been coming up, and the competition seems to be getting better. I feel like we are slowly but surely catching up to the Japanese players. Netplay seems to have been a great help for improving the competition. There actually is a lot to be learned from netplaying, it can really give someone a lot of perspective in match ups.

Which player(s) give you the most trouble and why?

As in general playstyle? or specific players? If it's general playstyle... I'd say people with strong rush down and good spacing. I get too used to fighting players that just press buttons, so I can easily punish them... So, when I finally come across someone who knows their spacing and can punish all my sillyness, that's when I start having a hard time. I just have too many bad habits that are easy to see if you study my matches.

What has been the most helpful tool while growing stronger in BB?

I don't play BB too seriously, but I'll just mention fighters in general. For me the most helpful tool is communication. I like to find friends or other people to talk with and learn stuff about match ups and my characters, that alone is enough for me to advance and get stronger once I encounter those match ups again. Really, just having a friend or people that can help you out and point out your mistakes/what you are doing good can be of great help.

Is there anything you'd like to share regarding your respective character or Dustloop in general?

I HATE GETTING INSTANT KILLED VIA 3 KNOCK DOWNS ; =; :arg::arg::arg: (Not that it happens very often anymore)

    • You can set up CS1/2 in RPCS3. CS1 is a no brainer, and CS2 came out as an update for CS1 if I remember correctly.

    • Opinions on Fate haven't changed much it seems... still no one gives a shit about PSP aside from it having netplay and the tiers basically look the same except with Gil only sharing his tier with ZL now that the latter has his full potential properly documented.   The most maintained Fate wiki is now on Mizuumi and is basically a compilation of everything from the wikidot and Japanese atwiki, plus newer developments in recent years: https://mizuumi.wiki/w/Fate_Unlimited_Codes   The Big One 2nd Arcade channels are also the most consistent place to find footage of high level Fate gameplay.
    • There are people who have been playing CS1/2 with emulators. I've yet to try it myself, but it's easy to setup I've been told.
