Thread is for the Axl Vs Venom Match up.

Venom seems to be a very hard match up for Axl anyone who has any knowledge on this match up please feel free to share.

I've played a lot of this in previous games, but don't yet have much experience in Xrd. This time around, you've got a DP to shake his pressure, but no knockdown for tagging his ball set attempts. Still, you've got to prevent him from setting up, because once balls are on the screen, he owns that space, so rensen and 5P are your friends at neutral. More on this later.

I've fought Venom quite a lot in Xrd. I may have a DP, but even then trying to find an opening in the middle of his pressure. I've fought two kinds of Venom's: long-rangers who close in when needed (say, a teleport) and the one who uses the balls as an excuse to get close. I think anyone can tell which one is more dangerous. Still, I've always tried to poke him a lot as he sets and also never giving him a chance mid-range.

So far, my only best strategy is poking Venom whilst looking for an opportunity to catch him for a simple combo. Some players tend to jump a lot with this one. And if you're real desperate to close in on him, a simple 2P > 6H, 2H > 6H, or following either low attacks after an RRC can help. I feel Axl's odds (or my odds, rather) with a Venom is 4-6 generally.

Yea I've played against a lot of Venom's. Most times I fight Venom he is playing the rush down version. Rarely will I see the I stay at range and TP to get out of mixup's.

So far I can take out most of the TP Venoms. However, with the rush down types its a no go.

For me the match up is like this.

Rush Down Venom 1-9

TP Venom 4-6

This may be due to the 5F lag games online as I've never found a Venom with a solid connection.

When I see that I'm up against a Venom I just say to my self "here's comes the up hill battle"

I think this match up will get a lot better if they give us our knock down on Rensen back tho.

I spent a few hours playing this matchup today, so my basic thoughts.

You lose at full screen. If he can keep you from getting in Resen range with charge he's gold. Your Rensen is your god here for beating his zoning and getting in; you need to predict a move and get a lovetap in.

You want to be playing maybe two characters away from him; make it so that you can bully with 2HS, 3P, and 6K while occasionally tossing out a 6H. You also lose if he gets pressure going, so you don't want to be too close. Be warned that his jumps tend to take him over a Rensen upswing, so YRC that on a whiff.

He can safe jump the hell out of your DP, don't bother with it on knockdown.

I had trouble low profiling his jump ins, so watch out for that.

I feel like I'm doing nothing to the Venom player, and he beat my attempts at getting the advantage at the start of the round,

Any advice on what to do at the beginning of the round?

Venom is one of many characters in Xrd who isn't going to be jumping in with many things you can low-profile. In general they've made that a lot weaker as, for example, all the new characters have mostly ground-touching air normals, but Venom has always been bad: jH, jS, and jK will touch the ground, and jK is 12 active frames, so he doesn't even have to throw it late to snag you.

I actually like engaging venom from closer than most characters, outside of his P range but inside K. Your primary non-risky mixups are going to be frame traps and tick throws, and his main breakout is DAA, which I believe you can low-profile, but you definitely can counter or safe jump. The 3P, 2K, and 5K ticks are pretty effective, and I like 2H-6H YRC (j.K/throw) a lot in this matchup, because he can't beat the 50/50 without guessing right.

To get in, you're often going to be relying on either tagging a ball set with 5P, j.S, or 2H, or throwing a rensen, but I've found that this is one of the matchups I really want thundershadow YRC in for taking advantage of openings that won't get me a rensen (Some teleports, high ball sets). Also, consider engaging Venom air-to-air when you can. Your j.K and j.6P are both really great for messing with what Venom is trying to do a lot of the time: Toss a downward-diagonal ball at you so you can't contest his jump-ins with your AA chains.
