10stars Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 Since I am not 100% with enkasu setups yet I try to go for the biggest damage using KJ FRC in air combos. Most times I do blah blah -> KJ FRC -> jS, jK, jD Ensenga or KJ FRC -> jHS Divine Blade for knockdown. As for the ground, I've become fond of (in corner) L2MFM -> 6HS -> That's My Name when I see that I have > 50% tension. It does decent damage and looks really cool, but I'm pretty sure Johnny could do better things in the corner for 50% meter. Oh well, sometimes I like to place aesthetics over practicality even though im not 100% with my enkasus i still go for them whenever i see the opportunity, even if you dont get it, you dont drop more than 20 points of damage from a KJ damage combo to a KJ > AD > enkasu
JOFan Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 i'd rather add damage when playing srsly. that being said, i can do my enkasu around 90% of the time off various setups. However, i dont have much success over landing the unblockable after mist frc. mabe i am just reading my opponent wrong or something but the mist trap in ac seems fairly glitchy/unreliable and usually its not worth the effort and tension put in. At the very least, its still good to know as it shows ur general jo knowledge i guess. loool. lets not discuss this here and mabe have a mod move it to general jo discussion.
qwerty Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 Johnny could do lots of lots of cool combos, with 1-hit ensenga enders, DB knockdown, or just plain damage. Wich ones would you find usable in matches ? in ideal theory fighter, it should always be enkasu knockdown to either another enkasu knockdown or damage combo. but, in an actual match, you bet your ass i'm going to take a 70% health combo against jam over an enkasu she can burst/parry/one frame jump out of (though ideally, of course, you should score knockdown and then do damage). as a side note, what uses does db knockdown actually have? the only time i ever use it to end combos is against a moroha'd aba.
JOFan Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 setting up cross-ups, or johnny's myriads of crappy oki options. unless.. u frc the db and go for mist frc.... >_>;

Free Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 Hi, i have two questions if u will be so kind to answer. 1. how much damage 5x divine blade will do using FRCs? 2. how much damage j.h > ensega > RC > L3 Mist Finer > -standard air combo- > KJ > FRC > -standard air combo finisher- does?
10stars Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 Hi, i have two questions if u will be so kind to answer. 1. how much damage 5x divine blade will do using FRCs? 2. how much damage j.h > ensega > RC > L3 Mist Finer > -standard air combo- > KJ > FRC > -standard air combo finisher- does? Divine blades do not link using frcs in accent core. Divine blade no longer causes the opponent to float, it instead causes them to plummet. j.h > ensenga > rc > l3 mf > extended combo does roughly 65% to every character besides Pot and Robo.
Killerwatt Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 Pretty much what qwerty said. Johnny's the high risk moderate reward character. Kinda makes you wonder why we, and other Johnny players still play him huh? I've never been one for tier lists. I play who I like, and I like Johnny. I may not win a lot, but when I do, you damn well know I feel pretty badass doing it, and I'm sure it's the same for all you other JOs as well.
Jo Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 Why did any of you guys ever pick up Johnny to begin with? I used to play Chipp back in GGX and didn't really like him in XX. When I heard what Johnny's mist did, that's what pretty much did it for me. "Unblockables? FUCK YEAH!" Back in the day when I heard "Johnny mist cancels", I thought people were talking about canceling his normals with.. the mist. I was like "Why is this good? This sucks." Ah, scrubbin' it.
10stars Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 I picked Johnny because he looks cool. Same reason I picked Bang, and same reason I luckily play mags. After playing Johnny this long now, Tiers (in the US) are borderline meaningless. There's Eddies that will be on top in the US yeah, like Latif, Marlin, and Marn. But the rest of the Eddies running around (That I've played on the east coast) definitely aren't playing to the best of his ability. Johnny players learn more because they can't rely on their character to win them matches, its based off of the players skill level, instead of the position on the tier list. But to continue on why our boy is low tier, he's tension dependent (even though he has THE highest tension gain in game) in almost every situation. He has trouble zoning, and a limited amount of coins. His oki game is decent in corners with mist, but he lacks a throw immune attack such as Jams 5h and Mays 5k, so he really has to be more careful. He has a piss poor high low mixup as qwerty said, but he was given a good throw game.
Killerwatt Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 I've never been one for tier lists either. After starting with Ky back in GGXX, I grew bored with him towards the end of the #Reload era, then I was inspired by a mirror JO match I saw between two friends in college. I'd also been a huge fan of the Iaido style in games way back when with Ukyo in Samurai Showdown and Ibiki in Last Blade/CvS2. So Johnny was a perfect fit. I may not be a great JO player compared to some of you guys here, heck I may not even be a great player, period. But I love the underdog, and you can't be more underdog that ol' Johnny. At my most recent tournament vs a Slayer, not one person was rooting for him. That alone is reason enough for me to continue playing him, because we are so few and far between. And the hype that comes with defeating top tiers, well, you can't beat that. Plus, he's voiced by Japan's most epic voice, Norio Wakamoto. Do I really need to go on here? lol
Kadius Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 This thread feels like a group therapy session, haha. Johnny just feels right to me. The rhythm of his gameplay (combos, etc), I also enjoy having so many options in my combos. Playing Johnny feels artistic. And the fact he has so little going for him means that I have to be the better player, and I guess there's a little pride in that.
Jo Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 he's AMERICAN Sol is American too. At least that got this thread a little active. Any Johnny players heading to EVO09?
Jo Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Snap. We should play if you do-- I'm pretty sure I saw you there last year but I didn't get a chance to play you. It seems I'm going to Devastation though-- so.. whoever else is going to that, I'll see you there. I'll rep teh JO in AZ for Rialto. Anyone been working with Johnny lately? I've been messing around with a few tricks (in my head) so.. let's see how this goes.
qwerty Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 i wasn't at evo last year. i did get a chance to play jellyfish awhile back (since he lives in norcal! and i had no idea....) and it was good fun. we had quite a few instances where we'd do the exact same thing (mirror jackhounds, for example), so we got some lols out of it too. i've seen your matches jo; you're a gat-dang walking gimmick i'll tell you what (though i'll admit to borrowing some of your tricks on more than one occasion, specifically RC return jack for mist setups).
10stars Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Sol is American too. At least that got this thread a little active. Any Johnny players heading to EVO09? If i can pull some cash out of the ideas in my head, I'll be attending.
Jo Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 lol, return jack for a mist setup. Nothing says 100% Tension Waste than that. My bad, I guess I got you confused with some other Johnny player. Johnny is Johnny's worst match up. 10:0
ilikeusingdizzy Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 If i can pull some cash out of the ideas in my head, I'll be attending. how much does it cost to enter evo?
4r5 Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 Getting to Evo is the hurdle that keeps most people from entering Evo.
10stars Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 how much does it cost to enter evo? For me from jersey it would be at least 400-500 that i would have to drop to go.
JOFan Posted June 25, 2009 Posted June 25, 2009 is it possible to do hs > tk dbfrc or tk kjfrc into extended shitty air combo? I was trying it out of curiosity but didnt have much success with it. i know HS itself is not jump-cancellable but by adding the TK into the move it should theoretically be able to jump install specials like db or kjfrc.
