It was good enough to get a live action adaptation on some American PPV channel, I've only heard good things about it especially from Ryan, so I figure I'll like it. The PREMISE................ sounds great as well.

Posted

Ray the basic message of the series is never to perform surgery on kids because they might turn out to be Hitler.

Honestly though I can see why it would get a live adaptation.

Monster is godlike. I thought it was like a rite of passage for anime?

Not old enough to be a rite of passage.

I read up on the premise; Monster sounds like it's above average, but not really amazing. The way I'm seeing it hyped reminds me of Gurren Lagann, which I thought was more or less the same (above average, not amazing) after watching it. Then again, it's not hard to be above average when you consider how terrible the average anime is.

Serious question. How do they fill over 70 episodes on that one premise? It doesn't frustrate anyone that it takes so long to NOT resolve the central conflict?

It is amazing though.

Seriously, believe me here.

Diverse cast of Characters to explore, some small side stories, and the fact that it just has that much substance. Go watch it. I'm almost entirely sure that you will not regret it.

I'd appreciate a spoiler free environment for those who choose to watch it. Treading dangerously, my good man.

It's hard to explain really. The premise is enough to spark interest and the ending serves to give the reader/viewer more than enough to think about, whilst avoiding pissing you off entirely like others that end similarly. However, it is not an idea or theme that should drive you to continue. watching. While it is expected for everyone to be interested in the ending, the journey is better. I don't have enough time to get into it now because I have a doctors appointment in 30 minutes but just trust me that it's worth it. Characters develop better than pretty much any other show I've watched. Everything happens for a reason. If you think an episode or set of episodes is filler, you're mistaken. Everything is important.

Ryd', you're entitled to your opinions but I find it kind of irritating that you're able to judge an anime based solely reading it's premise. Give it a shot and then talk, you might find you like it. I'm not trying to call you out or anything, just saying that it's worth giving it a shot :) My opinion, that's all.

Gankutsuou makes me want to use BIGGG words

Sorry, I should've said plot synopsis, because it was certainly a lot more in depth than a mere premise. Also, I prefer my media (novels, films, anime, VNs, manga...whatever) the way I like my women: rich, interesting, either intellectually deep or capable of making me laugh, and not bloated. Clocking in at 70+ episodes violates that last one.

Posted

There is a difference between "bloated" and simply "lengthy", and most of the time the difference is less the amount of what's there and more what is there within itself.

And it does pretty much fill everything that you listed aside from the laughter thing.

I thought the original anime rite of passage was Kanon.

Gankutsuou is hot fire.

What I've seen from Monster was honestly pretty good. I completely forgot which episode I was on, though.

Also, Carlos have you seen Teekyuu?

Everything that I've read (plot, premise, blow-by-blow for the episodes) screams generic Iris Johansen novel, except her books don't take 27 hours to read. I'll stick with other stuff; the hype alone makes me wary, and the only stories I've ever seen that would be worth that time investment generally do it in a fraction of the time. Except maybe the original Dune series, but I haven't clocked myself reading those; that's irrelevant though, since I already know this doesn't have shit on Frank Herbert.

Brian, no. And from the 6 seconds it took to google it, I don't know if I want to. It sounds like K-ON, but with tennis.

I thought the anime rite of passage was Cowboy Bebop, I mean that's pretty much what everyone forced on me in highschool and was offered two sets of DVDs to accomplish.

Fixed that for you. I mean, if we're going to talk rite of passage, might as well go with a classic.

Carlos go watch Teekyuu on Youtube. All 20 minutes of it.

It's like doing a couple shots of anime.

Oh, Mehraj uh, I was probably going to wait till next week because this week is finals.

If enough people wanna hang out I'll stay home to play games.

I'm down for Friday if you're going to do something.

I understand that for sure. The show itself isn't for everyone. The length alone makes it hard to recommend as something everyone should watch.

Also, what other anime should I get around to watching eventually? Once I finish Gankutsuou I'm going to watch Mushi-shi, JoJo, Great Teacher and then eventually finish Samurai Champloo (Not sure why I stopped that one).

Carlos, teekyuu is the amount of content of both seasons of k-on in about 20 min total. Also if you're worried about tennis, its about 1 min of the total show. Definately worth a watch.

Rath, if you're looking for any other recommendations, Katanagatari is probably my favorite anime i've ever seen, I would highly recommend it. FMP is also Fantastic.

Maybe I'll check out Monster at some point if I ever feel like starting a long series (I haven't actually looked it up yet, so this is contingent on me thinking it looks interesting). Tho maybe I should do GTO first, i've been hearing people say its great for years and haven't gotten around to it, how long is that one?

Posted

I want to say GTO is around 50ish? Whatever it was, it was too short.

Also Mikey you still haven't done baccano or drrr yet.
