$5 was the entry for GGAC last season, so that is why I picked that.

decreasing prices for each game messes up the pot, if I play 2 game equally how do I pick one. What if I win my secondary tournament? do I get a pro rated pot because I only entered with 3 dollars instead of 5? It really doesn't work.

I wouldn't dream of requiring pre reg, but pre reg helps us out a lot when building brackets and keeping tabs on equipment.

I only suggested waiving the 3 dollar community fee for new comers, not reducing their tourny buy in. It makes sense to waive that part, because as a new comer they don't know if playing fighting games in a gameing scene like this is for them, so they shouldn't be forced to invest in its future.

I am fine with reducing the price to 3 dollars per game, but I think it is a bit silly. $5 dollars is already a really really low buy in. I don't think $5 buy in will scare away anybody who wouldn't be scared away by $3 entry. At the 5 dollar entry level, the cost is low enough that any body who is willing to play in a competitive environment will compete.

Also keep in mind, making the scene really big doesn't mean it will be better, just filled with more whiners and scrubs who aren't willing to improve. We need both quantity and serious players. So the entry needs to high enough to attract quality players! Good competition will come down for bigger tournament pots!

I guess we need some sort of incentive to get people to pre-reg? Reduced venue fee is the obvious one...

TAO: Please put this on the first page.

I'll be straight with why I made my decision.

There are people on campus that are tight enough on the recent budget hikes to pay tuition that can use any help they can possibly get. Having life in a scene and people to play is better than a scene that is composed of the same people every time; that is how a scene deteriorates and eventually dies. If we become choosy about who we let in, we are only robbing ourselves of free hype and more players. If people whine about loss, there's nothing to lose here--so long as everything is done in a straightforward fashion there is little credibility to words. In fact, that is free publicity about the event.

I also do not like the free model because if we have too many stragglers coming to play casuals, it will interfere with the main setups to get the tournament still on time. This is a matter of great importance that I understood from Tao when at the previous venue.

Pricing flexability was also a key point; people that are hyped about BB and curious about GG and MB would be able to enter with little risk. This was my attempt to not have BB simply steal the entire show.

That is why I made the choice.

The community has given me a few opinions from what I've read so far in the thread, and as host for this month's ranbat, I feel that I will be able to do NCI's name justice with those opinions and bring in new blood, while hopefully providing a relaxing atmosphere. I assure you these decisions were made not only on my personal judgment, but also on the pretense of conditions for usage of the SJSU building for holding this tournament, and other planned events/arrangements. Thank you for the form registration template, Katana, I really appreciate it.

Are we seriously doing pre-reg for a monthly ranbat tournament? Seriously?

If anything it's simply data for gauging the turnout. If people don't sign then brackets can be made just as easily as they were at SVGL. Pre-reg offers nothing that showing up on site wouldn't do.

If it is over kill, we won't do it next month. It is pretty easy to do, so why not try it out. At the very least it makes counting set ups easy.

Is there a down side to pre-reg?

It's for organization scrub juice! >:3

Yes, Scott gets in troll mode.

Let's be real here. It's probably unlikely we'll get a bit more than 16 people per game. The room looks like it should have more than enough room, so I don't see the point of trying to "gauge" the turnout. I guess keeping track of who is bringing set ups is nice, but we don't really need a pre-reg list for that. It just seems like a bit much just for a small, monthly ranbat. Not to mention the whole purpose of pre-regging for a lot of bigger tournaments is that it helps organizers make brackets ahead of time and organize the tournament, but that is only at a large scale. It's kind of like saying "well, you didn't pre-req so it's inconveniencing us, so you have to pay a little bit extra". But now I just see it as you're punishing people for the sake of just not pre-registering. It's not like signing up the day of the tournament will screw us over or put us behind in making brackets.

It just seems unnecessary, IMO.

Also, I don't agree with $3 per game entry fee for the whole season. Maybe the first month it'd be all right to try and get new players into the scene, but after that, I think we should just go back to $5 per game.

They aren't? My mistake then, as I seem to have misread your previous post. Still seems a bit unnecessary to have a pre-req for such a small tournament though. lol

For the record, if we do use the CS Clubroom after this, I'm down for raising the buy in back to 5.

Pre-reg is completely unnecessary. I bracketed the 25 entrants for NCI v.2.0 MB in 20ish mins. Most of that time was typing in the names of entrants. Honestly, everyone running brackets knows what they're doing and they can do it in 30 mins or less. I opted to make brackets at the NCI minor close to the starting time because I wanted to make sure I got all the entrants. If I made brackets the night before and there was an entrant or two that I would need to seed, but they didn't pre-reg, I'd have to completely remake the bracket anyway.

I agree to raising the entrance for every game to $5, not including venue/etc. If not at this one, then the following ones. It's nice to accommodate for newer players, but there needs to be some incentive for the regulars too. $5 entry is really not too expensive.

I will bring the usual 2 full MB setups. I'll extend my offer I made for the minor again: if anyone provides me with a CRT, I'll lend my LCD to BB for a setup.

Just fyi, MB is going to be the first to start.

Ranbat Tournament Schedule:

MBAA Singles: 11am - 5pm

GGAC Singles: 3pm - 9pm

BBCS Singles: 3pm - 10pm

well perhaps, we should switch the pre-reg over to just keeping track of who is bringing stuff.

Also, on the schedule, I think we should move MB an hour later, and GG an hour earlier something like

12pm MB

1pm GG

2pm BB

Nah, just keep it. It doesn't hurt to keep it up and vice-versa. NCI monthly ranbats will run 2 hours late regardless of what you do.

If this was a major tournament, then that's a different story.

Edit: Just note that you'll be running three tournaments in one day - (1) you can't afford to let every straggler to come in late and (2) you want to prevent crossover matches. I recommend you space each tournament at least two-three hours apart.

Since we don't have a 5v5 to worry about I think we can afford to start at 1PM/2PM/3PM.

Don't get surprised if NCI starts three hours later than scheduled. It has been like that at every tournament except for NCI v.2.

I'm set for this NCI ranbat. I have time off and I'm coming down. But PLEEEAAAASSEEEE seriously... no one in San Jose can house me? ONE NIGHT?! This happens every time I go down there :< (Aginor was nice enough to before but he moved :/)

Also, its a MUST that there is an HDTV there. I remember someone posting that they'll bring there's, hopefully it has lagless/game mode. Acer moniters are unrecordable with my setup.

pweeze :3

Wasn't like that for your SVGL BB tournaments. >_>;

That's because BB tournaments took place at SVGL. We were pressured to get the tournaments done on time.

Won't really happen if I'm running it.

Okay, in that case, I am going to start making plans for SUPER NCI at March. GL guys.
