Exhibition/Special Events

PU2011 is part of the EVO 2011 Tournament Season

Starting in early January, EVO is partnering with the top grass-roots tournament organizers to form a regular season of fighting games. Our 2011 season will run from January through July, culminating in the EVO World Finals July 29-31 at the Rio Hotel and Resort, Las Vegas. At each stop of the tournament season, players will earn ranking points that will directly determine their seed in the tournament brackets at the EVO World Finals. With literally thousands of players attending the finals, you're going to want to secure that seed if you want to advance far in the brackets.

More info on EVO2k.com

PU2011 is VGF Sanctioned

The VGF (Video Gaming Federation) is a new rating system founded by Xiang from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a long time member of the community and avid Tekken player. Players at PowerUp 2011 will be invited to join the VGF and be acquire a rating for SSFIV, T6, and/or MvC3 that they can follow on the VGF website. For more details than I want to post here, check out the VGF website and PowerUp Podcast Episode #45 with Xiang himself.

Mystery Tournament for Charity

The PowerUp 2011 Mystery Game Tournament will see half of the players' entry fee go directly to Child's Play ($5 to the pot, $5 to the chairty). Child's Play is a game industry charity dedicated to improving the lives of children with toys and games in their network of over 60 hospitals worldwide, and it is one of my favorite charities. So get ready to play some wacky games and feel extra warm and fuzzy because you've given to a great cause spearheaded by fellow gamers.

The Mystery Game Tournament will still be part of the PowerUp Bonus Structure. I will also be able to provide a receipt to prove the donation has occurred after PU2011 has concluded.

VOLUNTEER INCENTIVES

Anyone who is asked, and agrees, to any particular job at PU2011 (including help with registration or running brackets, for example) will receive at least the following:

*$10 flat entry for the whole event

*A FREE PowerUp 2011 staff shirt (the shirt will be different from last year!)

PAYOUT & BONUS

This year we're doing things a bit differently with our payout and bonus structures.

8 - 9 entrants, payout is Winner Take All

10 - 31 entrants, payout is to Top 3 at 70/20/10

32 - 95 entrants, payout is to Top 5 at 55/20/10/5/5 x2 (accounting for ties)

96 - 159 entrants, payout is to Top 8 at 45/20/10/5/5 x2/5 x2

160 - 319 entrants, payout is to Top 16 at 35/20/10/5/5 x2/5 x2/1.5 x4/1 x4

And for those coming in 1st Place, never fear! The PowerUp Bonus Structure is here!

Starting at the 32-entrant level we'll begin taking $2 out of each tournament entrant's venue fee and putting it toward bonus money for 1st Place in that specific tournament. Just multiply the number of entrants in a tournament by 2 and you'll get the bonus amount!

PU2011 online pre-registration is live! Go to the PowerUp Store to pre-register until April 21.

The only games not available for pre-registration are KOFXIII, MK9 (pending official release dates), and MvC2 (pending finalization of low-tier rules).

T-shirt pre-orders will be online as soon as I get the final logo files from the artist, and finalize the deal with my screen printer. I will make more announcements about these remaining items as needed.

We'll be going with this ruleset from the SRK Low-Tier League for MvC2. I found this ruleset in the Naptown Clutch thread, and the individual post was made by BeaTs*:

Banned characters

Magneto

Storm

Cable

Sentinel

War Machine

Iron Man

Black Heart

Spiral

Doom

Strider

Cyclops

Banned Assists

Tron (Projectile)

And with that, MvC2 Low-Tier registration is online!

We've got really solid local GGAC and BBCS competition. These guys are always looking for people to play, and PU2011 is the best opportunity for them, so come on down : )

The PowerUp 2011 menu has been added to the OP. With one of our house rules being "No outside food or drink" I bet you may have wondered what we were offering up at the venue. Well here you go!

Posted

With the official release date of MK9 being April 19, that allows me to put the game up for pre-registration for PU2011. So if you'd like to give MK9 a shot in tournament, sign up!

Happy February, everyone, now give me your PS3s.

I jest, I jest, but seriously we will need your help to make sure PU2011 runs smooth. Donating your hardware and software is important to the event, and all of the PU2011 staff will make sure your donated materials are kept safe all the way to the end of the event.

Take a look at what we need on the TV/Setup Incentive List. First come, first serve! So PM me fast if you're sure you can bring stuff.

Posted

Working on getting a PS3. If I've got one by then you can definitely use it.

Also good to see a real menu. Hopefully it'll actually be there this time. :v:

Road to PowerUp: Ascension is tomorrow. Anyone going? Might actually be able to make this one.

Hit me with a PM once you're 100% on the PS3 donation. I appreciate it!

And yeah, with a little bit of luck the PU2011 catering will be all that it was supposed to be at PU2010 and more. If the caterer's smoker breaks down again, though, I can loan him one this time ;)

Oh damn I completely missed this thread!

Everyone from Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio should come to this!! The new AL is a lot bigger than the old one, and there's a lot more going on this year. Last year was a blast and this year is going to be a lot better!

If you're interested in making your way down to play BB or Guilty, just post up! Let's make these games and this tournament even bigger this year!

I'm looking to come out to this with a small group from East Ohio, and we're all pretty damn excited for it. Still up in the air on whether or not I wanna enter GG and BB or just BB. Either way, you'll all love taking my money.

Any word on what the TVs in the hotel are like? I was pretty devastated when our room at Season's Beatings didn't have the ports I needed it to.

Posted

I will see about getting a look at those TVs in the next week or so. Thanks for showing interest and for probably getting a room at the La Quinta!

Posted

The tentative schedule has been updated. MvC2 has moved to Saturday, and ST has moved to Sunday. XvSF has been dropped from the official lineup to make it easier to run head-to-head cabinet tourneys. And most of the tourneys are now starting earlier as well.

Posted

The TVs at the LaQuinta are designed not to accept any outside input, unfortunately. So if you want to game at the LaQuinta, you'll need to bring your own TV. Sucks, but it's also the hotel closest to the venue with some great room rates.

Can't have it all, I suppose XD

Posted

Aw damn, no input? Oh well, maybe I'll have room in my car for a TV. You're right though, can't beat the rates and walking distance.

Posted

This is sounding super hype, gonna try my best to make it out and support ohios scene. Doubt I can makie it all 3 days but hopefully Friday & Saturday can happen. Looking forward to some GG/BB let's get hyped ^.^

Posted

I'm hoping for good turnouts in both BB and GG.

GGAC 3v3 is on Friday, so put together your teams!
