She has that awesome utility move that reflects projectiles, a reliable DP (as far as I've noticed), her normals are fine, and she seems great at building meter. The only thing I can maybe see iffy is her Super.

Not to mention a lot of chars have an initial part of their projectile special that cancels out the opponent's projectile before sending out theirs ala K' and Ash. The recovery is pretty bad considering that by the time she reflects their projectile they are able to send another one out. She might as well have thrown out a psycho ball. her dp is ass against other dps, and normals lack range like both chin and kensou. I can understand why the Jap guy who posted his opinions on each character says Athena just doesn't fit KOFXIII's mechanics. Most zoning in this game gets shut down easily because of the many ways of avoiding projectiles. THe only zoning characters that can still thrive in this environment are ones who can control some of the ways you can get in. Characters like King who can lockdown the air and ground so you can't just super jump in or roll in for free. Athena doesn't really have any tools to stop me from Super jumping in or good ways to get people off of her. Her DP trades a lot or gets stuffed and her teleport doesn't move her far enough and with it's recovery the opponent on reaction has time to get in on her while she is recovering from the teleport....so yeah

Why does it matter if your opponent is able to throw out another projectile while the first is being thrown back? They simply clash and things are reset to neutral, plus you build meter for using it, not psycho ball. The active reflecting frames are about the same as anyone else's, maybe off by maybe one or two frames but no big difference. Her DP isn't bad if it's EX'd and I don't think a situation will arrive where two people throw out a DP at the same time. Her normals may lack range but they're still good enough to get the job done (her corner pressure is pretty good also). She does lack when it comes to controlling the opponet's movement but I find that if someone jumps in or rolls in you can just teleport and force a psycho ball situation or sneak a command grab if spaced properly (overall you aren't controlling their movement but your own). Athena is a pretty normal character if you ask me, her way of fighting isn't as conventional as say Kula's or any other character. She requires a mind-set that is neither full rush-down or full zoning. I think in all her simplicity she does have a bigger meta-game then she's not being credited for. Mu has taught that simply looking at what a character has isn't enough but rather how it all plays out in a grand scheme of things. Now i'm definitely not discarding her, imma make this character work, no matter how bad it gets. P.S. the post I made before this one was a joke. Edited December 27, 2011 by LastStarSaviour
Seiki Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 We can theory fighter all day Star, but honestly my opinion is based on watching players like you yesterday, trying out her moves in training mode against various attacks, watching anyone who played her at SCR, and A sponsored KOFXIII player from Japan's opinion. And each time my opinion remained consistent. She is a weak character. thats just what i think and regardless if she is or isnt go ahead and play her man since you enjoy playing her. I'm probably going to get blownup by an athena player one day and be like damn i guess im ass at this game.

I will say your opinion is justified since I watched a lot of Athena matches myself and people do really poorly with her (which I think comes from just not understanding her type of character). Plus, you have to take into account this japanese player. Either ways idk man, I think there's more to the story than "Athena is ass"
