Top_Cat Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 You say that playing each other is what solely makes us better, to this I have to say you are wrong. Any player i've seen making progress in any of the games they play have been on their own time that they put into the lab and their match-ups, never from the actual off-line community (Which makes me feel like we're falling short as a community). I've seen Volpe make a surprising amount of progress in BB and when he was playing Kof. This didn't come from him playing us, but rather learning and understanding things on his own through lab-work (The same applies for me myself). While this is good, it definitely could be progressed at a quicker rate if we all did and understood more. I'd like to say that you talk about if people have a problem with something that they should change it, but that's exactly what Volpe was intending to happen with the comment. At least, it gave me the incentive to speak my mind and get a few things I felt out there. While I'm not necessarily of the opinion that playing others is "solely" what makes someone better, I completely believe that it is the most significant factor in becoming a better player at any game. You can only go so far with training mode. Use it to learn your bnbs and to simulate certain scenarios that will help you in knowing what you can or can't do in an actual match. Past that, it isn't going to get you very far. The most important aspect of succeeding in a fighting game is to be able to reliably understand how your opponent thinks and take advantage of that. Training mode can't prepare you at all for playing against actual people. In training mode, you're playing against a poor AI who cannot pick up on nuances in playstyle, where in real life, people can read their opponent and have the ability to capitalize on it if the opponent refuses to adjust his playstyle to cope (which is why many people fail to progress very far. Players who may have great execution and theoretical match-up knowledge but constantly eat/don't punish the same things over and over are not truly good players). In other news, my car will be fixed soon. I don't know if it will be fixed by the 31st, though. Keep your fingers crossed ;D
Seiki Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 I dont think you understand what im saying. And btw I pummeled you back when i actually gave a fuck about blazblue. Im not saying I'm better than you but you have a huge stick up your ass and someone needs to tell you.
LastStarSaviour Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 (edited) Mind explaining to me when this was? Because honestly, outside of BBCS:EX we've never fought. Unless you mean those times where we had casuals and you played Jin (Jin was one of my worst match-ups at the time). I don't understand how we play fighting games competitively (supposedly) but we aren't alowed to be passionate about it or we get categorized as having a "stick up your ass". Stay golden, logicial fallacies. And you have your head up your ass and someone needs to tell you about it. Edited March 16, 2012 by LastStarSaviour
Jackie Chandler Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Why is it whenever I neglect to check Dustloop in a reasonable amount of time, I *never* fail to come back to two or three more pages of material? There are so many points I feel like I should address, but I don't have the time nor the patience. To me, MTN is more than a monthly tournament. Sure, we all have different ideas and opinions, and we give each other crap on what seems to be a regular basis, but I think that's part of why I feel a closeness to pretty much everyone in the community. The fact that we're honest with each other and open with how we feel differently on all kinds of issues is proof to me of the sincerity of our community as a whole. We care about each other enough to speak our minds, and allow our ideas to clash just as much as we do when playing a game. I feel like that's one of the most profound forms of respect you can have. But that's just the social aspect of the community. When it comes to the actual events, it's so much more. Yes, it's a struggle to see who can reach the top, and yes, there's money involved, but that's not what it's about. Those are just incentive for the community to take the games seriously, and so both players can truly fight each other at the best of their abilities. In participating in these kinds of events, we share and witness these awesome moments together, as well as grow closer as individuals. And if you learn something along the way, that's just icing on the cake. I don't believe the community is just a tool for improvement. In fact, I find that notion insulting. We help each other out because we're a group of friends who have similar interests- not because we want to use each other to try and stomp everyone else into the ground. At the end of the day, MTN should be about having fun playing games we enjoy. It's what brought us together in the first place, and no matter what happens, it should be the one medium we agree on that keeps us together. At least, that's what MTN is to me.
Grimstar Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Could we please stop with the Street Fighter/Blazblue shit for god's sake? It wasn't funny the first fifteen times you said it and it definitely isn't that funny now. That wasn't a joke. I'm closer to the SF guys than any of you guys. That's a fact.
Volpe-de-Glacio Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 (edited) I get where you're coming from, Jackie. I never meant that the community was just a tool for improving, I just figured that was universally an integral part of having a scene for competitive games. I thought of the two as going hand in hand; a scene grows together not only as fighters, but friends. I guess my view point is a lot further off than I realized, but I believed that becoming competitive and gaining an edge in games we all enjoyed was part of the fun. It's not about stomping other people to the ground or worrying about w/l ratios, it's about those thrilling battles we have as we clash time and time again, sharpening our skills as a community. It's about developing awesome tech and sharing it with your friends, about those long-running rivalries that culminate in a hype ass match mid-tourney. Maybe I was wrong. Naimat, that should really only be a problem in the event that certain people can't handle that top players will emerge in a competitive atmosphere. As long as a scene isn't full of immature, salty mofo's, that really shouldn't happen. Edited March 17, 2012 by Volpe-de-Glacio
Seiki Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 You guys are being way too dramatic. You guys aren't this vocal in person which I would prefer instead of on the interwebz.
Volpe-de-Glacio Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 I would say these things in person but what am I supposed to suggest? I don't know enough about any of my games to know exactly what I should be working on, so all I do is get as much experience as possible. All I know is that I've seen the best players coming from scenes that are cohesive and supportive, and they constantly push each other to exceed their limits. Look at Japan, for instance. Their country is relatively small, so the top players are either in your local arcade or a short train ride away. If I'm coming off as dramatic, it's unintentional. I just can't help but get riled up over things like this. It's who I am.
Grimstar Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 (edited) Honestly how many of you actually care to play BB and get better at it at this point? Naimat is taking it seriously, LSS is apparently... Astaroth has dropped it entirely for now, Idk wtf Midnight does. But it may be coming down to an issue of Blazblue just being stale at this point. No one is getting better because no one wants to play it at a higher level. I for one don't have any intentions to play it because I've got other crap I want to play, and when I play fighters I'm focusing on KoF and SF4 right now. Like I said, I learned as much of BB as I care to at this point, and if I play in a tournament I'm intending on letting my general knowledge and fundamentals carry me as far as they can, since I'm not going in depth very far with this game. LSS I can see what you want man, I know how you feel wanting to get better and everything, but like I said... No one posts about it probably because no one's playing it. It is what it is. Volpe-de-Glacio Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Jackie and I are serious, for one. Im picking up stick so I dont have to worry about platforms. But this isn't just about BB. Its the scene as whole. The extent of help I received picking up KoF was "dont rely on 50/50s" and that sometimes the best option is to not move at all. As Leona, this is the best way to die. Hard. But honestly thats just KoF.
Jackie Chandler Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 I'm still very serious about improving and continuing playing Blazblue, and I don't think it's simply a matter of people "not wanting to play it on a higher level" or the game "being stale." There are still plenty of people here who are interested in playing BB at a higher level. In my opinion, the problem is that people who play on a higher level are rewarded so much more than people on a lower level, the latter get discouraged and stop trying to compete (or improve) altogether. I think it speaks volumes for Blazblue's depth, but for some people, that isn't a good thing. I've said it before and I'll say it again- people want a game they can be good at without dedicating a bunch of their time and effort. Blazblue is not one of these games. On a side note, you guys have to keep in mind that the Street Fighter community is not only bigger, but has more people in/closer to Nashville. It's much easier for the SF guys to get together and do local friendlies/leveling up than it is for us. Besides, we keep up with each other using this thread, so it's not like we only have one day of the month to talk with each other and discuss the things we want to.
Astaroth136 Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 That wasn't a joke. I'm closer to the SF guys than any of you guys. That's a fact. Lies. I've been to far more of their tournaments than you, and I've rode (ridden?) to out-of-state events with them. I'm also less white than you. LOLOLOL
Astaroth136 Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Okay, I guess it's my turn to post a wall o' text. The best thing to make yourself better is netplay. It's as simple as that. With netplay, you are exposed to all matchups and any tricks/strats the opponent may use against you. That's how I was decent beck in my Blazblue days. Your scene can make you stronger, but that's not their sole purpose. If you're losing to someone offline, ask them why. Ask them where the openings are and what you are doing wrong. It's also important to note that frame knowledge isn't everything. Sure, it helps, but knowing frames doesn't make a player good. You don't know how many times I've heard people say, "Why are you attacking after that?! You're at a disadvantage..." while playing SC5. Surprising your opponent and not following the general formula of things will win you matches. Being a training mode monster means NOTHING either. Sure, it helps execution and setting up scenarios, but it doesn't prepare you for mindgames and mixups. I think this scene has been a huge success. Chandler and Volpe levelled up tremendously. Despite what people say or think, Star was and still is a good player, as he placed third at MWC last year. Naimat's Bang was always solid, but gets flustered too easily midmatch. Papstr really started doing some work and nearly beat me with Ragna last time I played him. When Milln had time, he'd practice execution, and it started showing for a while. Tad is Tad; he'll gulp a few beers and kick your ass. Someone told me that Klein started doing pretty well... I didn't know because we never got to play. lol Star, a scene's skill will eventually plateau. We also don't play every, single character, so our matchup experience is limited. You're also hard-headed and sometimes passive aggressive. Then when someone says something about, you throw your hands up with a "woe is me" attitude. I'm not saying this to piss you off or start anything. I'm just giving you an outsider's view. Naimat is stubborn too. It's largely a part of his personality. You can never convince him that he's wrong about something, no matter how ridiculous his opinion is. This is why you (Star) and Naimat clash so much. For those who have forgotten, there were only 53 entrants in BB at Final Round. Therefore, don't expect us to break much over 10.
Grimstar Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Lies. I've been to far more of their tournaments than you, and I've rode (ridden?) to out-of-state events with them. I'm also less white than you. LOLOLOL Fool

Milln Posted March 17, 2012 Author Posted March 17, 2012 Alright i'm finally home. MTNG, for me, is what i've always been saying since the very first day. Bringing you all together to meet each other and to experience other people. Getting you all to broaden your interests is bonus. "Where all of the BlazBlue players? In your houses? Nonsense! You're coming out to Game Galaxy in Antioch!" And in this goal, this event, this community, and my goals have all been successful. No large wall of text needed from this guy. *salute* I've got friends in each one of you and all of you have friends in each one of us and good memories to boot. Whether it's making fun of each other, collecting funny quotes, finding the Mystery Arby's, Jackie's Mom Adventures, Road Trips, or anything, it's all an experience that I want you all to enjoy and share with each other. Awww.

Milln Posted March 17, 2012 Author Posted March 17, 2012 homo? or no homo? Maybe a little bit of both.
Seiki Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 I just want to go on the record and say to Star and everyone else that I am willing to admit when I am wrong but I haven't because I have not been wrong. /troll but in all seriousness I argue to better understand a person's position. When I find something that doesn't logically click in my brain and I present it. I don't think i or anyone is "right" or "wrong" and just because I always comeback with something to say doesn't mean im just stuck in my ways. It's my way of investigating and understanding what you are trying to say because (especially on forums) it's pretty hard to put down words which have all these connotations attached to them that can clearly express what you are thinking so it requires some refining and that's what my pestering is.
