Astaroth- I think my fear of Tager is gone, like, completely.

Only because I don't even play the game any more. If I knew his new combos and oki setups, I would've won. I also failed at churning butter since I haven't done it in months. Don't worry though, that Tager fear will come back.

Congrats to the placers though.

AYO THE ONLY STAR OCEANS THAT MATTER ARE THE FIRST ON SNES AND THE SECOND ONE ON PSX. ALL THE OTHER ONES CAN GO SUCK A D.

ALRIGHT? I'LL FUGGIN' TALK ABOUT SOME STAR OCEAN

They all fucking matter, even tho the first two have the edge, I'll agree. Some found 3 questionable, but I still thought it was worth playing thru 2.5 times.

I liked Till the End of Time enough to finish it. The only thing people had beef about was the plot twist in the middle of the game with the 4D crap. Which, yeah, was fuggin' stupid.

Last Hope is dumb and I can't finish it.

Second Story is the best and my favorite game and I don't keep favorite games. I played that game so much, man. Dias one character solo game was awesome.

Decus is a nut.

SPICULE.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHH IT'S HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT

Edit: Forwarded the shoutouts to SRK guys to their forum.

Vocal: Bullshit, I've played both, but admittedly only the earlier Tales games. They were fuggin GREAT, don't get me wrong, but you're gonna have to offer a little more to make it a math equation.

Milln - 4D plot line was weakly told, but actually an amazing idea, where they took it in the end worked well. The Last Hope was a very solid excellent game. What did you find stupid that captivated me like a fool? 2nd Story was the best, I'll agree. I didn't take it as far as you did, I had my head shoved too far up Valkyrie Profile's ass, but I gave it two full play thru's, and I started the third with the intention to use the glitch so I could build my favorite team of 8. Dias was a badass. I liked Albel Nox because Dais Flac existed.

Alright fine. If Tales of games had to be given a score, I'd say about 10 on the gameplay and 9 on the plot. And Star Ocean, 9 on the game play, and depending on which game, a 7. So, 10 + 9 = T > (9+7) = S. If we solve it, T = 19 > S = 16. There. I just math'd. And I probably did it wrong, because I can't math to save my life.

I also have a three-point assessment as to why Tales of games are better than Star Ocean games.

Tales of games have always been superior to Star Ocean when it comes to gameplay. The fighting system is ten times faster and smoother making it much more enjoyable to grind character training and levels. Star Ocean is just sluggish and movesets were meh. Even with the newest Tales of games, the mechanics are so similar to fighters there are some bosses you won't even be able to beat without understanding fundamentals.

Second, When it comes to characters, Tales of games definitely have Star Ocean beat. They have, by far, a much more memorable cast. I'd go on about specific characters in Talesbut there are just TOO many to care about.

Lastly, I've found Tales of games to have a much more enjoyable soryline. Yeah, they may be saving the world in each one, but the situations and struggles each character in Tales goes through keeps me tied in and attatched to the bigger story. With Star Ocean, a kid gets a big ship. Kid has to go save a bunch of worlds.

So yeah, In with Tales games, out with Star Ocean games. If you need more proof, go play Tales of Symphonia. If you need save data, i've got about 50+ memory cards filled with it.

I was fine with the 4D stuff until they said

they blew up Tetragenes, Opera's homeworld from Second Story. Also them explaining that the Star Ocean world is a game and your player characters are rogue data, begs the question of just what were your other player characters in previous Star Oceans? Rogue Data? What about the antagonists? It begs too many questions that cannot be answered satisfactorily, so I didn't like it.

I agree where they took it was fine, but

they didn't need to say that the entire Star Ocean world was an MMORPG.

Last Hoap, I really can't put my finger on why I dislike it. I don't understand, It's the same thing with me playing Chrono Trigger. I hate Chrono Trigger, one of the highest praised rpgs of all time and can't play it or Last Hope for longer than fifteen minutes at a time. It might have just been that I had a lot going on at the time and couldn't get immersed, but I still have the game and i'll give it another shot another day.

Second Story, man. So fantastic. Remember how you felt when

The Ten Wise Men blew up Ronixis and the Calnus? Dude I was like HOW COULD THIS BE? right alongside Claude.

and Rena

being originally from Nede was pretty wild, too.

My response to your views:

Battle system- Star Ocean might be sluggish in the beginning, but it picks up very quickly as your stats increase and you get access to items that allow you to move across the battlefield faster. Also, you very quickly start doing much more damage and get access to Killer Moves, the Chain Combo item that lets you chain Killer Moves together to create wild combos. The spell casters are also great and hold a lot of strategy into how you can use their freeze-framing property(First two Star Oceans) to your advantage or their incredible potential to do whatever you want(last two Star Oceans). Understanding mechanics of the game exists in any rpg, not just TalesOfs, not just Star Oceans, any rpg game. There are a lot, a ton, of mechanics of Star Ocean games that you can use such as distance from you and your enemy, the aforementioned Chain Combo, sidestepping, all the Skills you can assign your characters that have an effect in battle, how items work, etc. I've never felt like the battle system in Star Ocean was ever slow.

Characters- This is a biased opinion. I can't name a single Tales Of character outside of Symphonia and Phantasia. I don't remember how anyone acts in Phantasia and I only remember how Colette, Lloyd, and Zelos act in Symphonia. I only remember bits and pieces of the other characters.

Contrast, I can name every single character from every Star Ocean, including most of the bosses or at the very least describe them and their attack patterns in detail. Star Ocean The Second Story, I can tell you each character's personality RIGHT NOW (as in, you know, without skimming over story parts for a primer like other people might be inclined to do) and so on and so forth.

Story- This is also biased. I don't remember Symphonia's main storyline, as in why they're going from place to place. Oh, wait, wasn't it something about Colette's

wings

? But I do remember a lot of the plot twists

such a Kratos, blah I think I everyone knows that. and Mithos' face/heel turn

Contrast, I can tell you how all the stories in Star Ocean play out and am STILL blown away and STILL feel emotion for the characters involved whether they're main characters or the little Private Action skit characters. The

FUGGIN' FLOOD OF PORT CLIK? YEAH. THAT MUSIC? YEAH. I will always have that feeling of "wow, we just got F'd" hopelessness. As well as the aforementioned destruction of the Calnus and Ronixis' death

and so on and so forth. Also, I don't recall "Boy gets ship, boy saves world" being the focus of any of the Star Oceans as you have just stated.

I'm convinced you didn't --actually-- play the Star Ocean games.

My opinion on the Star Ocean series is that the first three are all variably enjoyable games. The Last Hope, however made me question humanity. I only played it halfway through because I couldn't stomach Edge and Reimi's bitching and some other stupid things.

I traded it in after getting Arumat.

Oh, right. Edge is a retard. I forgot.

And Crowe is a god moder. I like this Starlight person.

Agreed. And the voice acting in the Last Hope made me hurl. But honestly, I can say that they both are good series. I enjoyed Till the end of Time alot, and I replayed it at least 4 times. Besides that one, I couldn't really get into the Star Ocean games. I tried the Last Hope, and traded it in about a day or two later.

I'm also convinced that you are wrong (Ain't getting off the hook that easily, Boi!). Could've sworn that Last Hope was about a kid named Edge or something and he was assigned A BIG FUGGIN SHIP! (As I stated) and HE FLEW AROUND THE GALAXY PROTECTING PLANETS (As I previously stated), do keep up.

Also, I don't recall saying that needing to understand the mechanics of the games applied only to Tales of and Star Ocean games (Where you interpretted this i'm not sure). I was saying that the Tales of games can be approached much like a person would a fighter when it comes to combat. This is due to the freedom of control, movement, and the overall combo aspect of the games. One thing I do admire even more about Tales of is the fact that it's always evolving. Never expect one version to play like the other.

You say that my aspect of the story is biased but I honestly have to question that. If you look at the requirements for a story to be good by a hard-core RPG gamer Tales has everything. The plot twists, the characters and their ability to develope over time in an interesting way, and a journey the size of GOD DAMN! Again, you may see it as bias but I see it as universal standards for a story to be met in order to be considered good. Now the characters part can go either way since personally I enjoyed the Tales characters' personalities, faults, and trials far more than I did that of any Star Ocean character. Again, that's just me. If i'd have to say one thing about Star Ocean is that it beats Tales in terms of graphics, but that's about it.

Again, let me make sure that we know the topic is about Tales of vs Star Ocean.

Yes Crowe is.

That whole scene when he reappears made it seem like he was trying too hard to be generically badass. And the secret ending takes away any "impact" that his "death" may have gained. He wasn't around long enough to like anyway.

Also thanks despite the fact I live in Philly and I'm posting in the Tennessee thread. :v:

Doesn't matter where you're from. You post when, where, and however you like, that's the way of the forum. I tried joining your room a few times, I think *Ponders*

All y'all are weaboo fggts, trashin' eachother's games.

Your right about the latter part. It's better if we can all find something to hate together. Like the E.T game for example. :kitty:

@LastStarSavior I think I did see you once too. Who do you play?

Posted

I'm not really trashing any game. I still found Star Ocean to be so-so, just not as gdlike as the Tales of series tended to be. Again, this whole topic was Star Ocean vs Tales of

Also Starlight, I play Mu and Noel.

Posted

It is bias because you can say for one and downplay the other when they are similar.

Edge getting a ship and saving planets is not the focus. Each character you meet has individual struggles just like in TalesOfs. Every plot device in TalesOfs exist in Star Oceans. Last Hope is also not the only Star Ocean. It's also definitely not the best. You can't compare all TalesOf games and one Star Ocean.

Starlight, I officially make you an honorary member of the Middle Tennessee community, just like Lumin. Maybe not just like Lumin, I don't think anyone can be like Lumin.

I knew I should've done my post in all caps to drive home the lack of seriousness.
