unsanctifier Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 i have returned, how have things been my sexually questionable amigos
AchedSphinx Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Here's another terrible RPG: Star Ocean The Last Hope. Seriously I only played through half of it before I couldn't take any more of Edge's whining. Haha, gotta love those main characters that just enjoy whining about every little thing. I played that game a bit but didn't get very far. Kind of reminds me of Luke in Abyss, but at least he cut his hair as a sign of reform. Character transformation always begins when you cut your hair :P
pktazn Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 X-2 had the best battle system ever and made it worth playing for me. XIII-2 actually looks like an improvement to XIII. Thaaaaank you. I'm glad to see that I wasn't the only one who enjoyed the battle system for that game. I think Famitsu said that XIII-2 fixed everything that people didn't like about XIII. I'll have to see for myself though haha. Also hello Rachel general~
AchedSphinx Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Hiyo Pk, we're talking about worst games we've ever play which transformed into some semblance of games we've liked. X-2's battle system was something like a class system right? I think I remember the costume changes. I like what they're saying about XIII-2. It might be the redemption in the FF series that Square needs. I'm hoping it is. Looks like I'll spam youtube for some gameplay trailers and such.
Tari Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 (edited) X-2's battle system was really, mm, intuitive? As far as turn-based systems go, it made sense and worked perfectly. The story, on the other hand, was pretty much just lulzy, but the game was fun to play regardless. Here's another terrible RPG: Star Ocean The Last Hope. Seriously I only played through half of it before I couldn't take any more of Edge's whining. Oh, don't forget it came out with that anime art on the international version that didn't in any way whatsoever represent the in-game graphics. On the other hand, Star Ocean 2 was amazing. Though, to be fair, I played a lot of the game just to poke people as Welch. Edited December 8, 2011 by Tari
AchedSphinx Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 I just know Yuna wore hot pants. That's about all I know of the plot for that game.
kotokot Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 the only thing i remember about SO4 is... DAT ASS.
Sakaku Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Star Ocean 4 is so good, kay? It was like the best jRPG I ever played, kaay? Nah, I'm just kidding, kay? So annoying, I swear.
Tari Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Star Ocean 4 is so good, kay? It was like the best jRPG I ever played, kaay? Nah, I'm just kidding, kay? So annoying, I swear. Is SO4 seriously that horrible? At this point, I'm almost tempted to rent it just to see for myself. You guys are making it sounds so unbelievably painful.
AchedSphinx Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 I don't think the battle system is horrible, just the characters. Think of every overdone JRPG, anime, manga, w.e archetype/stereotype you can think of, they basically just throw them all into that game and hope you miss the cringing. Could just be the voice actors though. Probably should have gotten it in japanese... not sure if that's included or not.

That game is like the litmus test for the amount of annoying anime cliches people can resist. @Sakaku I actually didn't mind Lymle even though she sounded like she had down syndrome. It's was Edge and Reimi who I wanted to see die a thousand painful deaths. Not to mention the voice acting for Reimi was Laura Bailey at her worst. Edited December 8, 2011 by Starlight777

All I know is that it had very misleading cover art.
pktazn Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 SO4's battle system is fun. The story and characters leave much to be desired... actually they leave a shit-ton to be desired The PS3 version lets you choose between the English and Japanese voices. Not to mention the voice acting for Reimi was Laura Bailey at her worst. Really? It's worse than her Welch voice?

It's was Edge and Reimi who I wanted to see die a thousand painful deaths. Not to mention the voice acting for Reimi was Laura Bailey at her worst. Lol, I feel you man. OMG Reimi sooo likes Edge but she's being so tsundere about it in the corniest, uncutest, most obvious way about it. And Edge, oh Edge, how oblivious you are my friend. She could probably tell it to him to his face and he'd swear she was speaking to the invisible guy behind him and then it'll be more cringing and more cliches.
AchedSphinx Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Yes, I agree about the battle system though. It's similar to Till the End of time's battle system, well I'm sure they're all close. I actually got as far as I did in SO4 because of the battle system. Amazing what a battle system can do for a story.

Sakaku Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 I'm just glad I played SO4 before I started ToV. Otherwhise I wouldn't have enjoyed the battle system of SO4, which was the only enjoyable thing about the game.. V: edit: Come to think of, how are SO2 and SO3? Played SO1 on PSP and didn't like it, so I'm not really sure whether to try 2 and 3.
Tari Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 SO2 is a pretty good, standard, old-fashioned JRPG. I enjoyed it, but then, I also played it in class sometimes, and it was just a good way to pass time. The story and characters are mostly all likeable. No idea on SO3.
AchedSphinx Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 SO3 was actually really cool, I liked that one. Quite the lengthy RPG if you have the time to spare to play it.

My god and I thought Reimi's voice was nasty.

Yeah in the other games, Welch was relatively cute but when SO4 came around she looked so creepy with that drastic change. Let's not mention her enormous forehead in that game too. She looked like some realism meets moeblob alien freak lol. Also here's how I rank the series. SO2 (Easily the best of the pack) SO1 (Pretty good) SO3 (Has it's flaws but it's still enjoyable) SO4 (The Rebecca Black of JRPGs) Edited December 8, 2011 by Starlight777

SO2 (Easily the best of the pack) SO1 (Pretty good) SO3 (Has it's flaws but it's still enjoyable) SO4 (The Rebecca Black of JRPGs) Very accurate assessment. Yeah. FF8 is pretty bad. Other bad RPGS: Beyond the Beyond Final Fantasy Mystic Quest Tales of Innocence (my god, that jungle map) Wild Arms 3 Wild Arms Alter Code F Final Fantasy 12 Tales of Innocence is a sad tale where the character and story is actually pretty okay. Gameplay is also decently fun. What kills it is whoever designed the maps and environment. I'm sure someone had to be possessed by Satan to make that jungle map. I enjoyed FFXII a lot because it really exposed how simple typical RPG gameplay is. A lot of games just start becoming boring once you figure out one strategy that deals with any situation. This is why I will never look at gamefaqs again before completing an RPG. The music in FF Mystic Quest hits the nostalgia button so hard I can't hate it. Great for what it was. Final Fantasy II (NES) was a pile of crap though. Has anyone tried Atelier Totori? I'm thinking of picking that up because it looks absolutely gorgeous. Figure it would be a nice counterpoint to Dark Souls.
Sakaku Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Have you played Atelier Rorona? The gameplay is almost the same, there are just a few changes. If you haven't, it's just a.. boring "collect materials to create a cool item with alchemy" RPG without a good story, but with cute characters. v: Nah really, all you do is collecting materials, beating monsters to farm more materials or doing some side quests where you.. have to collect/craft materials. You also have a deadline set and if you don't succeed in crafting a certain item during given deadline, you will get a game over. That schedule oriented gameplay makes the whole "searching and trying to create new items through different materials" thing a bit discouraging. If you are a fan of collecting and crafting, the game could probably interest you. But if you look for a more traditional jRPG (which are more or less dead anyways), don't buy it. Again, the game has Lolis! v:
