It's spelled Cipher right there in katakana, not Seifer. サイファー, saifaa. Where are you getting this Mai will become an alchemist thing?

Point of advice: Don't ever take fan translations of particularly obscure looking names as fact, there is always a 90% chance they are in some way incorrect.

But yes, translations of names should be taken with a grain of salt until something official comes out, the last thing we need is another Platina.

Yes, this is true. It's best not to make a lot of assumptions on these sort of things. As a note, however, I decided to go with the spelling of "Seifer" as it's an actual name, and that 「サイファー」 could be interpreted as that spelling as well (a certain Final Fantasy character comes to mind).

It's however you want to look at it, I guess.
