Hey guys, just wanted say Hi to everyone and maybe get some feedback on who I should try out in GG :)

First, some background:

Currently mainly play NRS games (MK9 and IGAU) and I consider myself really good at both games. I've also played Smash competitively for years (SSBM mostly). I play TTT2 and all SF games casually. Basically, I'm saying I'm decently versed in fighters haha.

My playstyle:

I prefer staying on the ground, playing footsies and I get boners from creating situations where I can whiff punish lol. This is why I feel I need some guidance because air-dashers are a bit out of my comfort zone. I do think my experience with Smash and Injustice helps a tiny bit but these arc-sys games are a different animal haha.

Considering my playstyle and all the reading and video watching I've done for GG (including all the GG bits so far) I think Slayer fits me but I keep hearing that he has tough execution. I don't mind that at all, I play execution heavy chars. in my other games too but since this game is already a bit daunting with all of the intricacies of the mechanics I don't want to overwhelm myself learning. Jam also appeals to me even though she seems to be a more rushdown character (I feel I could maybe use her ground mobility as a footsie tool but I'm probably wrong lmao).

TL : DR

Basically my question is should I be scared of Slayer's execution and learn someone simpler at the expense of my playstyle or should I just suck it up and accept that not all things come easy and I can't just keep scrubbing my way through like I've been doing my whole life ;)

Slayer's actually probably middling in terms of execution requirements, and it sounds like he's exactly what you want. There's a bit of a curve to almost any character, so it's more important to get someone whose gameplan you can understand. Maybe give Order Sol a try if you don't like learning links. He's not exactly what you describe but does get to play games like that sometimes.

Slayer links aren't that bad. You'll be fine.

You sound like you should be hooked on the character after one Dead on Time, though :kitty:

Everybody has a different philosophy on how to learn a game and I'm sure people will flock to this thread to tell me I'm an idiot, but I think you're much better off learning the engine before you dedicate yourself to learning a specific character. I guess I'd recommend initially steering clear of Zappa, Robo Ky, and ABA simply because they have a lot of weird mechanics that will steepen the initial learning curve (also maybe avoid Potemkin and +R Justice until you've got a handle on the game's various movement options). Other than that, just pick anybody and play the game. Get used to the feel of the gameplay, learn about movement, meter management, etc., and get an idea of how the different characters play in a practical sense instead of focusing on theory. It shouldn't take you too long to figure out who you like, then you can start putting in the time to learn that character after you've got a solid grasp on the engine itself.

As for Slayer specifically, I don't know if I'd say his execution is especially difficult on the whole. I think the trickiest thing to learn with him are his air combos and being able to hit confirm off of a lot of different starters. I'm not an expert with Slayer by any means, though, so you might want to duck into his character subforum to get a better idea of the challenges you'll face picking him up. But just from where I stand, I wouldn't say his execution is that tough. Pretty middle-of-road, I'd say. You just have to be smart and really knowledgeable about the other characters' limitations, since a huge chunk of playing Slayer successfully means knowing when and how to punish your opponent's mistakes.

Not to self promote too hard, but I've been doing IAD-TV with someone like you in mind SNKE. There's a ton of information in my videos ranging from very beginner level stuff up to advanced theory. You might find episode 2 which breaks down the character playstyles handy for giving you more insight on what kind of character you want to pick up.

Give them a look while you are getting familiar with the game, hopefully they help you out!

Haha, that makes me excited!

This is actually helps a lot. It's kinda what I've been doing without realizing, but I still feel like learning the game with a character I get excited about will make my experience that much better.

Awesome! I'll give this a look :)

Also, what are your guys' thoughts on Jam? Does her ground mobility give her opportunities to do punishment up close?

Don't worry about Slayer's execution. It really isn't that bad, and he was made overall easier in +R. He has a lot of links, but only a handful are really needed. He has one 1f link that he needs for high level play, but the move is designed to be used pretty meaty, so it's made easier. He also has a few 'delayed gatlings' which are chains that can only happen at a specific timing during a move. (His 2K delayed gatlings into 2S/2H/2D, his 2S delayed gatlings into 2H/6H.2D, though it won't combo into 2H or 6H on a normal hit) Don't worry about it too much, though. Just get a feel for him. The Guilty Bits episode on him is pretty good, and the Slayer subforum should offer you a lot of help with everything about him.

Good luck and welcome to Guilty Gear.

Thanks man, appreciate the tips! Are the delayed gatlings you're reffering to separate from his links? Usually how big of a window do I have for his typical BnB links?
