[Xrd] Zato - General discussion and changes list

I tend to do that combo by doing 2 then inputting 22 and tapping H and P at the same time.

Because you can't cancel into 2P from 2S, you get 22H and be cause P is higher priority than H, if you let go at the same time, you get P.

I find the timing works out quite well if you do it this way.

2 > 22[H]+[P] > ]H[ + ]P[

Thanks, so for 2P>2K>-P>2S>etc... do you gatling 2K into 2S or do you link it? I heard that Zato was hard but I never knew that he was THIS confusing.

It's a chain usually. There's flexibility in the timing though so you can usually get a fairly late chain off if you need time to confirm.

This combo comes up often when you're doing 2K > -P- > 2K > -P- > 2K pressure.

You'll find that if your opponent tried to jump out of command grab and gets hit by 2K, by the time you've realised (hit confirmed), you'll have already input 2K > -P- again. At this point, you have a bunch of time to input the rest of the combo because of the hit-stun on -P-.

Posted

Did you ever hit the combo? Then it's probably right and you can do it your way. If I told you I do this combo by holding P since the character selection screen, would you copy it?

Posted

Example: comboroute into 5D6; 6P 2H 22S unblockable setup gets bursted somewhere -> find a way to -H- BTL YRC that and go into corner SG instead for maximum punish. You will get results a lot more quickly if you know what to do against people just saving up burst to get out of unblockables.

What is "-H- BTL YRC" ?  Mainly what is BTL?

You can actually do either. 2K has surprisingly long hitstun so you can get 2S to link or gatling. The trick to getting it is releasing -P- and hitting 2S almost simultaneously.

I'm looking at the Zato matchup forums and it is pretty bare. Would you folks be interested in me posting my matchup notes as threads in it? When I get in to a fighting game I make copious notes over what to do in each fight and why, I might as well post em and see if ya'll can get use out of them. In fact, you're already using my stuff if you checked out the guide poon wrote at the top of this thread. I was his college roommate and that post is based on my notes. Like that -p- dash notation you're all using was my notation so I wouldn't get confused ;]

Anyway, any interest?

It would be helpful. Maybe just dump everything in a pastebin here in case someone is working on match up threads

Kind of lost in this discussion.  Is this combo Zato's basic sandwich combo or something else?  What is the full input list?

Also do people have tips on Leo?  I keep getting frame trapped and don't know when I can get out.

I think your notes got cut off, assuming you have notes for all of the cast

I don't. If i'm missing a char it means i haven't had enough matchups to come up with anything.

Ah, ok. Helpful stuff regardless

that's an old #reload combo. i wouldn't bother.

to get started you only really need:

2p, 2d

p, s, h, 22h

ground string into eddie -s-, superjump, j.k, j.s, j.h, j.d

opponent guards eddie -k-, dash jump, j.k, fly, j.k, j.h then finish with something like -s- into aircombo

opponent guards eddie -k-, dash jump, j.k, land, 2.k, 2.s, eddie -k- and finish with something.

if you're feeling ambitious:

in corner: opponent guards eddie -k-, dash jump, j.k, fly, (guard break) j.k, j.h, eddie -k-, 5.d, homing dash, 6.p (1 hit), 2.h and plant eddie -d-, 22.s. then fly, j.h, 6.p, sj j.k j.h j.d

Really though you're fine to start with the first 5 and work from there.

So I should learn these things first then go to the better stuff?

absolutely. basics first then expand. if you start by trying to learn everything you'll get overwhelmed. it really is too much to learn all at once.

Also do people have tips on Leo?  I keep getting frame trapped and don't know when I can get out.

i lost to a leo so i bought him. from my pastebin:

his rekkas look stronger than they are. basically he'll hit with 5.s, 5.h, 236s, 236h (crossup), then either 5.k (low), 5.h (overhead), 5.d (counter) or 214s (knockdown). there are 2 situations that'll occur here. first, if you're blocking this string is stunningly easy to whiteblock. if you whiteblock his 236s, you can throw him out of 236h's startup before it comes out. it's really easy to do once you've gotten the timing down. watch for the 5.h then get ready for the whiteblock. you also get a free throw if you whiteblock  236h rekka. the timing for the 236h whiteblock is to wait for the 236s, then immediately hit forward after he hits you and then mash throw.
the second situation is if you're getting hit. if he goes for the knockdown, great, get ready to whiteblock and throw him. if he leaves you standing, block low for a split second, then jab. This will block 5.k, stuff 5.k and lose to 5.d. you can also do low block, then immediately command grab (236s). this beats 5.d, 5.h (you grab him out of the startup) and blocks 5.k, 5.s will probably hit you though.
if he's doing backturn 5.s (the cross move) and then the command crossup, you can throw him for free out of the crossup.

also, he's crazy strong online due to the frame delay. he benefits from it heavily because it makes his rekkas safer than they should be. well... maybe it's not that he's advatanged always, maybe it's more that lag really hurts zato because he doesn't have any good gatling combos.

edit: he's basically this GG's anji. really strong until players get his mixup down, then.... yeah.
double edit: after further testing, if you whiteblock 236h you can command grab all his normals and his backturn d for free.

so after playing this for a decent amount of time, as a long time zato player i'm definitely switching to an online only char. I'd love to be able to play zato more heavily, but he is just garbage in delay. requires too much precision to succeed in heavy lag. i'm too old and have too many responsibilities to hit the arcade and play local anymore, so... later. enjoy my pastebin notes: http://pastebin.com/8VV41m48

edit: seriously, online just play sol or potemkin and mash into vviper or hamerfall and win and think you're good! (you aren't though)

Is that some online-only matchup notes I see there? Haha what the hell. "feels like guilty gear's take on dudley. this char is a scrub's dream." That's the information I've always been looking for! Especially when I'm still actively playing Third Strike and have respect for Dudley in high level play. At least it's a change from the infinite amounts of "can I play Zato on pad?" posts.

I've gotten some of the Leo players around this area to whine as much as you do. How they can't even touch Zato, how delay makes it even harder for them to stay on Zato because they can't react to deadangles/bursts etc online shit like that is extremely subjective and absolutely everyone is biased against their own character anyway. I've also felt the online hate specifically against May after coming out of an online lobby. I'm definitely not going to run around and try to convince everyone how brainless May and how bad Zato is just because I lost to someone mashing behind a choppy connection.

Being the Anji main that I am I also took note of you comparing Leo to Anji, stating Anjis weakness as being that particular one thing that's completely unrelated to it. Made reading your stuff a little bit more awkward. Quiz time! I personally think Millia is an extremely underwhelming character compared to her offline version, can you figure out why?

I'm very sorry to everyone on here :( I have been neglecting my duties as the mod on here. It was a for a good cause though! I have been focusing more on getting the game itself out there and not just teaching Zato. To make up for it I will try to hold a weekly Zato stream entirely dedicated to teaching him to newer players. It's a lot easier to answer specific questions while I have the game booted up in front of me! So I'll try to stream the first training mode stream on the 22nd at 12 PM EST. Of course if you can not make it I will upload the archive to youtube like I did the overview.

Here's some Marlinpie Zato in the mean time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x08sbv-_zgU

Again I'm very sorry to anyone who has been depending on me for info and thank you very much to the active members who have been picking up the slack for me. You guys are the real MVPs.

Awhile ago I played you in BB as a new player and you were a pretty stand-up guy. Thanks for helping the community. Is there any chance we can get a Combo/Setup thread for Zato-1? I know he is not a combo character really, but if I'm going to learn him I might as well be practicing the most damaging combo's possible (that we know of). I'd also appreciate any tips anyone has for using Eddie in neutral which is my biggest challenge right now. I literally sit and study Ogawa's play writing notes but I just need a ton of play time. Even Ogawa seems to have a formula that he sticks to.

I see a lot of Drill to cover space for Eddie to approach, Break the law to focus on Eddie movement > YRC Zato > Combo/Pressure, or Pressure > Buzzsaw > Pressure > Buzzsaw/Throw Mixup. Learning the characters spacing is challenging as well as forcing the inputs into my muscle memory. I'll get there though.

It's nice to not really need to worry about backdashing. Zato has some seriously active normals/specials.

I have a few combos written down in the Wiki. Nothing Special really though. I didn't even have the game back then so the probably changed. I could make a combo thread if you want though.

Go ahead and start the thread. I'll edit things later on. Just make sure to explain the notation for button hold and release.

I'll be going live on twitch with Zato training mode in about an hour or so. Please come ready with any questions you might have.
