I think $2,500 is good coverage for flight/railpass/lodging and with still enough money for food and leisure. I've been there with plenty of cash to throw around, and I've also been there on a very limited budget. Both worked out fine. For those that are serious about this trip assuming they start saving up now/have income, I don't think it's as far-fetched of a goal as some people make it out to be.
