[CP] Carl Clover Gameplay Discussion (Changelog in OP)
spineshark replied to Akira-Shiro's topic in Carl Clover
hi, I think I've finally decided that I just wanna play this character (since I realized that the main thing I like about most of the other characters I've messed with is doing stupid troll bs and not really "trying to win"), but I've got a few questions about basic setplay. First, if I get a midscreen ground combo and I don't have Ada handy at all, what do I do? I've been just going into Cantabile, calling her during it, then rolling to the other side for sandwich, but is that usually the best option? I noticed right away he doesn't have the solo launch combos from EX, so I'm assuming that's the main thing but maybe there's something I haven't thought of? And similarly if I get a throw, do I just juggle into a jC knockdown and try to sandwich off that? Also, let's say I know that I have Ada behind them but not in range for 6]D[ or anything like that. is it good to go for Fuoco in that case to close the gap and get a meaty? -
Is there a video of this? I can't get to the super in time but I don't know what I can do any faster. It feels like the DP throw eats like half the timer, lol
-
wow that was freeeeeeeeeee thanks for pretending not to be bored kyou and whoever else that was
-
I doubt it but AOAs are kind of a mystery to me. It would probably do more damage in the end unless the mashing kills another rep, since full mash is one of the most damaging "moves" in the game.
-
When you say 5AB FC are you doing AOA on a feared opponent and OMB'ing right away, or is this the FC from mashing?
-
I caught the end of teams on the stream. Were you the Liz player on team XBL?
-
The only use I've found for 5C OMC 5C is to teach my friend to stop mashing Yu 2A out of 5C -> 5C. Against people who know what to wait for it's only good if you really need to pull Thanatos back, I think. Once you get in the corner things aren't so bad for Liz, because instead of people hitting Thanatos and getting away for free you can actually try to react to what they do and punish them for trying to get out. But only if you have enough cards to be able to handle people tapping him a couple of times. Of course, even in the corner she's no Chie or Yu. I actually like that she doesn't have all the canned mixups that most of the good characters do, but it's frustrating being mostly limited to playing for unforced errors at midrange (i.e. catching people who are approaching with 5C/2B/etc. because they pressed a button or jumped at the wrong situation) and trying to land risky throw attempts. Not to mention that other characters can mash out all kinds of garbage all the time and catch you if you're not super careful. I'm still not really sure I like this game enough to want to spend all this time learning another character, but if I were going to, it would definitely be Teddie. I had considered him as a possibility a couple months ago and only came to like him more after watching Souji all weekend at NEC. He's definitely the closest to a "good" version of Liz in my opinion: insane style/troll power, strong midrange with good runaway/zoning, super scary corner game, frametrap/throw bait based rather than mixup-oriented, cheap status ailment tricks, etc. If this game gets announced for Evo, and I think it will, maybe I'll reconsider, especially since I have spent some time learning his really tricky stuff and it's more the basics that I suck at right now. I'm a little too busy with other things to practice Persona much at the moment though =/

Just realized nobody had answered this. Yeah, you can. It's kinda stupid because it basically turns them into the SB version for twice as much meter (and they have to touch something), but I just checked, he can OMC at the flash and block the tagback. SB Kunais also do it automatically if you don't try to move or anything. Lame.

lol whatever. Your hair looks great, and I'm not just saying that cause it's about how mine looks <_< Shoutouts to everyone who played or talked with me over the weekend, which wasn't enough and it was my fault. No possible way I could remember everyone because I'm bad at that anyway, but I had such a good time. This was pretty much my first major since practically all I did at EVO was hang out with Denver guys lol. I'll fail less and be less awkward next time (hopefully FR?) hahaha Special shoutouts to... St1ckbug, the Japanese players, etc. of course Omen and Braver for being great roomies. Montreal for holding it down to the end. Eshi, I know we didn't talk that much but I learned a lot watching you and you got me hype for Liz again. Also, I laughed way too hard when I passed a shop on the way to downtown called "Maggie's Puff Stuff." It was just a couple blocks from a street called Federal and reminded me of all the silly pot shops back home (particularly...on Federal). Good stuff.

2B canceled straight to DGaru (5A 5C etc.) connects on counterhit and while it's not solid play I do it a lot in general for free pickups because many people aren't ready to tech before the tornado touches them unless they're mashing (in which case they probably got counterhit...). For me a lot of my process recently has been about trying to figure out what the other guy doesn't know more efficiently because you can win really free against most people if they don't understand basic things. The problem is if you spend too much time unsuccessfully testing their ignorance then you'll get punished for it, so it's kind of a trade-off. Obviously I want to play more solid in general too but I always feel like I need more shenanigans. That SB Bufu thing is good though since I just explained to my friend last week that he should burst during specials if he's going to because they leave me in recovery for too long haha

Man, that sucks. I lost to a Naoto too, one I assumed played Dacidbro in the first round because the rest of the pool looked pretty easy. I tried playing Yosuke because I don't know the matchup, both our Naotos gave up back in August lol. I shouldn't have been in losers in the first place though, I choked horribly against another Akihiko too. Two third rounds lost by about 100hp each time despite dominating game 2 completely. I'm usually too scared to tech so I just got tick thrown all day.

Haha nah, I know it's mostly the same stuff. Jamaal and MK are the only people around here who even know what to look for and actually try to get out of it. Everyone else just goes "that's so stupid!" and never figures it out so I've gotten kinda lazy. Against Chie my biggest problem is that I hate to let him just walk in but apparently I have to? I really feel like I kill myself in neutral in that matchup because the idea of having to block all that shit is worse than actually just blocking it. (I was laughing my ass off when minimatt said over and over that I was "patient." I'm literally blocking for what I'm pretty sure is the shortest time possible most of the time, it's just a little longer than it is for characters whose DPs actually touch things) So I end up trying to do KOF-style poking stuff off of me and just eat bigger things instead. I really only want to beat Jamaal, lol. Anyone else is just a bonus. Don't really expect to beat Mitsurus anyway unless I decide learn an actual character :s

So I got myself recorded for an hour tonight. http://www.twitch.tv/eflsafehouse/b/342507549 Starts around 1:06 and goes to like 2:12? First couple matches are my friend's Chie, then about six against Teddie and the rest against a Yu. After the break it's me again for another ten games but I'm just trolling a KOF guy from around here who bet his friend a beer he could beat me. If anybody wants to watch that's cool, if not it's not that special anyway. I DP too much and have some bad confirms (need to work on 2B -> DGaru starters, usually I realize right away they're gonna fall out and just stop but I know I can get more, and far 5D hits, although sometimes I let them go on purpose bc I want them to fall in the corner), but sometimes I'm still not sure what else I can do.

We've had three in Colorado. First tournament I lost to a Labrys and an Akihiko player, both who I was dominating in casuals before we got started. I think I gave myself away. Finished 5th out of 8, then repeated that at the second one but I wasn't playing Elizabeth. Yesterday we had 13. First I beat the Labrys who beat me the first time while using Liz again, then I went 1-1 in a Yosuke mirror before giving in and picking Liz. I don't know the matchup, I thought maybe he didn't either, first round was good but then I lost. If I'd won that the Aigis player who would've been my next matchup had to leave and I would've gotten a semis bye to Winner's Finals, lol. Anyway, next match was a Chie who barely plays and didn't know what to do about Liz at all. It was still a bit weird since he did a couple things my usual opponent for that match doesn't (mostly bizarre ambiguous j.C crossups), but really easy. Then I had to play a Mitsuru who beat me at the second tournament too. Picked Yosuke and lost, should've actually played Liz because it makes me more patient and the guy was just mashing constantly (Marvel player, lol) but I didn't realize in time. Oh well, I was kinda sick and had to go anyway so I walked away feeling kinda neutral about how I played (which...was better than the prevous tourneys). Probably going to just do Liz at NEC cause I don't want to take anything to heart too much and I don't have time to get half-decent with anyone else anyway, at least not without constantly grinding online matches. That doesn't sound appealing at all!
-
I really like playing Liz, I just need more options and to expand my mindset. There are limits to my masochism.
-
lol, that explains a lot. And yeah, I know, I constantly get roped into family stuff though. Last Friday was just really bad actually, I'll leave it at that. I'll be at NEC in two weeks but I'd love to come up sometime that isn't that. Had to leave the tourney yesterday before I got to play Graham (partly because my aunt and uncle were suddenly already in town for Thanksgiving which I didn't know, partly because I was sick) but I kinda didn't want to? lol. I picked up Yosuke a long time ago but I have pretty much the exact same problems (low life, people mashing on me all the time), plus now that GGAC is out and I've tried out Chipp I kinda just think he's not that fun anymore. I "want" to pick up Chie or Narukami instead but every time I try it's just...ugh. Can't do it. I really think I need to make myself do it (if not in this game then by learning Millia or something) because I'm a super random player and I know I'd benefit a lot from learning how to do something that isn't just combos and gimmicks. But I get bored so fast...
-
Oh snap, there is another Liz player in this state? Apparently I should go up there sometime. I've played MiracleKnight a bunch, he's in Denver, I can't beat him. I'm really bad but he's also pretty good at watching Liz and the only times I can really hit him with something is by doing like 5C5C5C5C5C5C5C5C(1)5D lol

you can't spell donate without "not ead"

So I found a bizarre little setup that I've never seen before and probably doesn't do anything especially useful, but just in case someone smarter than me can figure something out, here's how it goes: You do any combo that leads into sweep (like, say, 2A 5AA 5B 2AB), then 236A. Then from the resulting little bounce, you do 214C. A couple of the kunai hits miss that otherwise wouldn't because you threw them backwards, but it also causes the recoil to send you directly into their body, so while they go straight up...you fall straight down. So you're directly under them for the tech, instead of having them bounce half a screen away immediately. It seems to me like this only really leads to 2B/air throw resets, and to be honest I'm having a hard time reacting to random techs in training mode, so I don't know how I'd ever catch someone who was also late teching. In general it doesn't seem very good compared to other 236A resets/setup attempts, plus you're giving up 300-500 damage immediately, but I thought it was at least too funny to write off immediately.

I'm looking for people to room with. Going to buy tickets as soon as I'm sure which days I need to travel on, haha. I could probably put down the reservation on a room myself but I'd rather paypal someone or pay in cash or whatever instead. Also, I'm going to be entering GG and P4A and maybe BB I guess. Can't wait to meet people!
-
Yeah, random air Megido is pretty funny. It will clash out a lot of things including stuff like Yu DPs and then suck people up.
-
[1]~3 works. 1/3 both work and as far as I can tell don't move her differently (unlike 4/5/6AB (lol) and 4/5/6B). Nope, you can 6B 1AB~3B if necessary (just make sure you start charging after you press B instead of once it hits, but that's charging 101 obviously). Sometimes (like if you get a throw really close to the corner) you can 4A 4AA 4B 1AB~6B but the charge times are shorter than you're probably expecting so it's not that important. I know I'm bad at testing stuff like this so maybe I just fail, but I haven't been able to whiff cancel anything. Which leads into the last bit...again, maybe I just don't get it, but it seems really hard for most to punish Coups if even possible, even with IB, especially coupB if you place yourself further away on purpose. Obviously that's different against characters with really fast command grabs, but I think mostly you're going to get blown up if you space wrong and whiff moves (particularly anything that freezes), not from finishing blockstrings with sensible moves.

Second 2B is actually 3B, because 2B and 1B are angled too high to hit after they're pushed that far back. First one doesn't matter, and really this isn't a big deal anyway since obviously everybody's going to notice as soon as they get to try it haha.
