Try and play a character that fits your play style. From what you said so far, Azrael might be a good choice. Maybe even Terumi or Kagura.

I know it's too early to make judgments at this point, but do you think he'll be able to contend with the better characters in the game? -
I have issues with this too sometimes. Playing more will usually solve that problem. If you can, play with people in person as it really helps with nerves.
