son i am the oldest blood you'll ever see let me tell you I could volunteer my place (though it might not be the best at first, I'm still unpacking and shit) or I would be happy to meet up somewhere. I'd be fine messing with other games besides GG as well though the only other game I've ever really been at a competitive level for was 3rd strike due to living in Austin where everyone was at least passable. Not that I'm probably remotely as good at GG as someone who actually plays (I definitely don't know any current combos or even what the changes are for most of the cast in +R) but I've got fundamentals and pick shit up pretty quickly. Also I'm absurdly overconfident and like talking shit and that carries me p far

Also, if there are any dudes in the greater Lansing area that are either lurking or post in this thread, definitely let me know even if there aren't regular meetups in the area. I'd be interested in putting something together since it's a long drive for me to get to Ann Arbor or Detroit or wherever but I'd still like to get involved.

So as it turns out after 16 years I've moved back to Michigan. I'm not sure if anyone around here remembers me except for Finalshowdown (sup dude), and I haven't played fighting games for about 6+ years, but I've got to find something to do that involves meeting people around here so I guess I'm going to try getting back on the wagon. Name: poon Location: East Lansing Games I play: hahhahahahhaha (I am probably still pretty good at GG but know virtually nothing about +R)

Testament will give you the best bang for your buck if you are looking to be good fast. His combos are more about setup than about execution and he has a lot of easy tools to help dominate and control a match. Jam is even easier but doesn't have as high a ceiling, so it depends on what you care about with regards to overall effectiveness.

Operational Definitions for Gameplay Terms: The Project
poon replied to Digital Watches's topic in Guilty Gear General
Frame traps are definitely not always performed from frame advantage. At their core they involve abusing situations where defenders believe they have time to execute an action but, in reality, do not, and will get hit by the frame trap if they try. A character intentionally finishing a string at a frame disadvantage and then Uppercut => RC an opponent's response is a really basic example of this -

I guess that's true - rushdown has the added characteristic (unlike pressure) that if all you do is block, OR if you guess wrong, you're eventually going to get hit because it's not going to let up. You can leave someone in pressure for an entire round without ever trying to actually hit them, which is not really rushdown. So yeah, I agree. -

Rushdown is pressure that doesn't let up. It is continual and while it may have gaps it does not necessarily have breaks. If the action is continually "forward" then you have rushdown. Frametraps and pokes can be converted into damage and can have followups without being a rushdown situation. Some fullscreen characters present odd situations where they have an opponent in a blockstun/guessing state for long periods of time. This could be construed as rushdown IF the opponent does have the chance to simply block and eventually be out of pressure, imho. True rushdown requires the blocker to proactively do something in order to escape, at least in the way it is traditionally used. If a defender can simply wait it out and be back to neutral, it's pressure at best. Basically reaver's definition is correct (imo) -
If you are trying to learn the game to become competitive fast, pick a character that has access to all the basics because you are going to have a lot of trouble understanding the ins and outs of aerial movement if you start with Pot or even Zappa. It's very important to learn the dos and don'ts of air combat so even if you plan on maining a ground-based fighter you should learn a jumpy character early on as well.
