Saru Kada Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 no, we don't play with red tiles, so none of that silly red five bonus tile shit or all red hands or whatnot lol @ mahjong sets. why the hell is that key set $400? that's ridiculous. I could buy every single key work ever made for less than that. and I think we have a fine enough time playing regular mahjong, gabe, though getting a washizu mahjong set has been brought up before. the tiles we have now are a bit light but they work perfect, I don't see why you need to keep egging me on to upgrade, pete. getting an automatic table would make a lot more sense than some fancier tiles, space issues notwithstanding.
Zieg Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 What's wrong with the set you already have right now? Cheers, Dirty Kid

At one point my mom joked that she actually could get a blood transfusion machine set up for us, seeing as how she works as a nurse. Though what Akagi taught me is that those energy shot drinks can totally act as a blood substitute. Though if you are somehow drinking enough of them to replace the blood volume, you'd probably have several dozen grams of pure caffeine in your system. Frankly I think that the best thing to come out of Washizu mahjong is the idea of just putting all the tiles into a bag. Actually, Sirlin did that too for one of his games so as to avoid the need to keep shuffling and stacking ish. Making the mahjong wall is fun and all, but the bag is literally the fastest thing there is.
sweetvids Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 (edited) Well I was checking out automatic tables, and it appears that they're even harder to get and more expensive than we had originally thought. Some even going upwards of 6000$ for a new one and 1000$ for used, and this is not to mention finding one in the NA is super hard. So I'm thinking, if we can't get an automatic one, we can at least get a nicer set, and the lesser set can be for scrubs. There is this which has a nice balance of automatic and space. Although fuck 200lbs. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Automatic-MahJong-Folding-Table-/290592774163?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43a8add813#ht_1842wt_1185 Red tiles are an interesting thought since they are part of international rules. All red hands? Don't you only use three red 5 tiles? Wow Gabe, your mom reads Akagi? Edited October 5, 2011 by sweetvids

Saru Kada Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 all red involves the one, five, seven, nine-sticks, as well as chun. lots of local variations include honiiten which would be all green but chun instead of hatsu, and of course different ones including red tiles (some rules use more than three red 5s) red 5 isn't an "international" rule, the european mahjong association made it up for their tournaments. personally I think it's stupid, there's no need to overbloat the game with silly ways to gain extra points - like if we added too many local rule hands. dora is fine as is, ura dora and kans keep things interesting. once you add stuff like red 5s, people are only going to end up going for cheaper hands - for example, if you happen to start a hand with a red 5 or two and say a chuuchan dora, all you're going to do is build a tanyao hand. bam, there you go, instant mangan. I think it cheapens the game as a whole by discouraging the rarer hands, which is why I'm personally against it. I mean, imagine if we stuck to the true orthodox rules and played without open tanyaos? things would definitely be a lot more interesting. at any rate, if everyone else wants to use them, it's not really my place to say no, but we don't have any red 5 tiles anyway. also fuck 200 lbs, $1,300 + shipping? I don't know where you've been looking, but versatile machinery in the US has several lines of automatic tables starting at $850, through $1,500. richmond also actually just has stores that stock them, on bridgeport, I just have no desire to get one right now.
Saru Kada Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 stop the presses: all you can eat poutine festival saturday nov 19 30th @ arbutus, pretty close to my place who's interested?
sweetvids Posted October 5, 2011 Posted October 5, 2011 I'm fine with no Kuitans. Make it harder for Alex lol and cuts Nigel's possible hands in half. I don't really care since they're 3 out of 136 tiles depending on the rules and only act like Doras. But to make it fair you'd have to disallow kuitans or else like you say, it makes it too easy in those instances. I'll disagree that it cheapens the game, but depending on how many akapais are used. I've read forums where people use four, two 5 pin, 5 wan and 5 sou. 4 is too much and is stupid. 3, one 5 of each suit I think is fair along with no kuitans since if a person is going for the meld with the red, it severely restricts what hands they're able to make. But as of right now, it's just a thought since not everyone is good enough at the game to know the hands and the upper level tactics of playing and discarding, so restricting a good beginner hand like Tanyao is kind of harsh. Just wondering since sometimes I play online with the 3 red tiles. I didn't know Richmond had them. Yeah the 6000$ ones are like the latest ones from Japan that not only shuffle, make walls, but apparently also set up the break, dora, deals to players as well as keeps score. Commercial is fucking hilarious. I wonder if they hire just the same guy to do all those voice for everything. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNxsXc9psTM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ODooZ6oZfw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjdGgkjJeG4 Also Mike, you may not want a automatic table, but today is my birthday...... hahahaha

BagLunch Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 "They'll love the 4S. I bet my life on it." - Steve Jobs Shouldn't have said that Steve. Don't you see the genius of that bet? Steve knew that that's a wager they wouldn't be able to collect on.
sweetvids Posted October 6, 2011 Posted October 6, 2011 Well I believe this is instant karma since he said the quote yesterday, and much of the response to the 4S was "meh", and today he's dead.
