Oh man I'd play some matches with you if I wasn't stuck at school. You should add me though in case you ever wanna play some other time, I will always play that game.

It looks like someone from Socal will be coming to the monthly tomorrow for Guilty Gear. Luke, Byron, please destroy him. I think Koogy and Marvin will be there too.

And don't forget that Melty will be happening at the end of the night. I'll need laptops available that have the game.

Posted

I'll bring my two setups at the usual time, I don't have a laptop that can run melty at a constant 60 fps, so I'll leave that to everyone else.

A guy named Ean

I think I know who that is. I'll see what I can do.

If we are having a tournament on a laptop then we might as well just play casuals honestly.

I had a feeling it might come down to this. :|

Like I'm not against a tournament but I personally think the only real appeal to having a tournament is for ryan to record it and put it on his channel which is still pretty cool, but like, I feel like it's just being tossed in there just to appease us (because it is) and I don't really know who pushed for a tournament in the first place.

I'll still play either way, the whole thing just seems kind of forced

For the record, I don't give half a shit about my youtube channel. I want our scene to actually have a consistent event for these games that actually gets good turnouts. I want a scene I can be proud of, and I'm not just talking about having strong players. Back when Haz ran tournaments, we had a somewhat consistent thing to look forward to, although not a great one (out of the way, expensive, only 1 game that we cared about). After he stopped, there was literally nothing but casuals except the few times Ruben or I put together short sets of ranbats for only a single game each time. In my opinion, Ruben was the only person that made anything happen that entire time and I respected that more than anything. Not even joking about this, I had to do a tribute speech in my public speaking class and I did it on Ruben. Around evo last year I got really frustrated and confused with fighting games. I'm pretty competitive and I need to feel like I'm always improving or working towards something, but I realized in my position that I could never get to the point I wanted to with fighting games, at least the ones I wanted to focus on. If I wanted to play Marvel, I'd have Armando and Diego to practice with and grow with all of the time. I just knew I'd get frustrated over time and at some point wish I hadn't chosen to focus on this hobby. I talked about it a little bit at the time and threw around the idea of quitting altogether. Pretty much everyone told me something along the lines of "that sucks :/ I wish your circumstances were better." But I think Justin was the one that suggested I make a scene I would be proud of, so I decided to try. Ruben's been setting stuff up forever, helping people get around when they needed it, and just made things happen. Why couldn't I?

I'll stop rambling now. I actually started typing all of that because I misread Ray's post and got a little pissed off for a second, until I read it again... sorry about that. You're kind of right that I'm running Melty just because some people want me to, but I'm perfectly fine with that. These days, I just want to run a consistent event that has whatever games people want to play. I want there to be something to look forward to on a somewhat consistent basis. Even if I don't play every game, I still want to run what would make people happy. I always hated how people thought a game couldn't have tournaments after the next game was released. "CP is out so P4U is dead. P4U2 is out so now CP is dead. etc."

The main reason I want to stream these events and upload them to youtube is to actually show that we have a scene. This way if anyone is curious, they can see that we exist, and will be more likely to actually try showing up. I never would have met anyone here if Haz didn't stream his events because I never would have even known you guys existed.

Kevin bring your fucking laptop. We have a tournament to run and play

with the same laptop

EDIT:

"But I think Justin was the one that suggested I make a scene I would be proud of, so I decided to try."

I fucking love this.

Ryan you are the single worst, most frustrating person to play games with because you don't even seem like you even want to play.

I am enormously grateful for these events as it gives me something to look forward to every month and I appreciate all the time and work that goes into them. I personally also felt like Melty was "forced" into the lineup but I never said anything about it due to the potential backlash that could ensue. And for the record the Melty tourney wasn't my idea. I love the game and it's part of what defines me as a player, but it just doesn't feel like it was added on the best of terms. I'll be more than happy to play Melty casuals after the Xrd tournament finishes but I don't think I'll have the energy to play it under the guise of a tournament.

Don't worry HF, I'm always here to get the ball rolling.

I knowwwwwwww :(

I wish I could be more enthusiastic, but I just take them too seriously I can't loosen up at all... And uhh, sorry for last weekend. I was preoccupied with my girlfriend. I really wasn't happy with myself for using my phone and being so rude :(

Posted

Wait, you bring your girlfriend to FGC events?

nope :/

I was being an ass and was just texting a lot when I was playing. At least I feel like it's disrespectful.

The biggest issue with running MB on a laptop (assuming it's GPU isn't straight trash... but a lot of them, especially older ones are) has to do with the laptop screen (which you can just run out to a decent monitor instead) and background processes randomly eating frames (which you can go in and more or less temporarily kill). Yes, it's more work and yes I wish the game was on some console so it would be easier to manage... but I wish my army of magical girls actually existed, too. It is what it is. :\

As for if MB or another game would be forced or not... who cares? It's not like I (or anyone else) is chaining anyone to chairs and forcing them to play. I'm pretty sure you guys are thinking about this too hard. If you want to play, play -- and if you don't, don't. I think it's just a push to have an event that's reasonably consistent, while also finding something that's a bit outside of what typically gets played. I think you could run anything from Windjammers to Shaq Fu for a similar effect.

Frankly, I think you could run both GGAC and MBCC at events here until the end of time and get players (even if no one takes the game seriously at this point).

I'm not sure how I found myself here, but after reading through the last page or so, I'm going to drop my 2 cents.

Building a scene and keeping a decent monthly event takes a lot of work and can be insanely frustrating. There won't always be people to support it and, not unlike you Rath, other people's interest in the games will wax and wane as well. I'm dealing with the same thing at the moment. However, a strong community will help keep this from happening through strong social connections, but you have to get there first. I'm not sure of the competitive drive of the people you play with down there, but I say keep with it as long as you enjoy it. Being very competitive opens the door to a lot of great experiences, but the skill gap can be frustrating in locals. I've played some BB with you and you were quite skilled. Those matches were a blast for me and games like that are the reason we stick with this genre. That being said, people have to want to play the games. You can lead a horse to water...etc. You've heard the argument and you're dealing with it the way many communities are. Anyway, keep at it and I hope it works out for you guys. I'm too far away to support directly, but you have my "thumbs up" for what it's worth. I hope to see some of you guys at EVO or Final Round or whatever you make it to.

Whoa whoa whoa, I'm happy for you and I'm going to let you finish, but Ryan has a girlfriend?

After that time that you slowly lost more clothing as the weekend progressed in a certain Vegas hotel room full of guys...... well.........

Not even joking about this, I had to do a tribute speech in my public speaking class and I did it on Ruben.

Is this why I have so many friends requests on FB from people I've never met?

I am pretty much always down for any of the GGXX games, and I like Current Code a lot, so if there are casuals or tournaments for either series, I'll do my best show up and support them. I've even been practicing my F-Sion combos! I'm still going to drop them, though.

I'm also someone who just enjoys entering tournaments, so I really appreciate the work that goes into these events. I try to help out where I can, but if there's more I could be doing, feel free to ask.

I definitely agree that the "new game is out, can't play old games" mentality is lame. I try to only avoid playing games because I either don't like them or I just don't have the time to learn them, not because they're old.

I'll do my best to be there by 1:00 to set up, but I think I'm going to pick up a few things at Fry's Electronics so I might be there a little later. If anyone gets there early, it would be amazing and I would really appreciate it if you could start moving all the tables in the room so they are up against the walls like last time. That way we have room to play, without feeling like there's a fire hazard.

Thanks to anyone who shows up. Today's going to be fun!

Good games to everyone. It was fun as always. I just had to leave early because the smell was getting too much.

Who was it this week? Talk is about to turn real.
