Volpe-de-Glacio Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 (edited) Tad's status as a baller has been cemented, but I've gotta say it too. I get that it's probably a drain and I don't want to inconvenience anyone, but the thought of the MTN crew riding up in a minibus is pretty awesome. Also, 420 pages of MTNG. kek AW DAMMIT. That would get shifted to the next page. Edited February 16, 2012 by Volpe-de-Glacio
Jackie Chandler Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 MTN more backstories. inb4nobodycares. It's not really that much of a backstory. But... I can't remember if I told you guys this before, but coincidentally, I found out about Blazblue thanks to a Super Smash Brothers Brawl tournament K.O. was hosting. It was a 2v2 tournament I came up to with a friend, and at the time, I was very out of touch with gaming news. I'd gathered that they'd stopped making Guilty Gear games at that point (which I enjoyed thoroughly, but never made it to the point of learning decent combos), but I was content with it... That is, until I saw the Blazblue machine. Brawl was practically dead on sight. XD But yeah, everything just fell into place after that. Blazblue sparked my interest in other fighters, and I made a trip up to the arcade at least once a month after that JUST to play it, until it came out on consoles. If it weren't for that tourney K.O. hosted, though, I might not have known about Blazblue today, and I might not have even gotten into fighting games in general. So yeah, thanks K.O. I definitely owe you (and the arcade for having the BB machine, of course). :3 EDIT: AW DAMMIT. That would get shifted to the next page. Quick, Star! Save Volpe's logic with your editing powers!
Papstr Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 I'll spare the space: My story is like, almost identical to Jackie's. KO's Brawl tournament etc etc
Top_Cat Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Same. Though I don't remember seeing you at that tournament jackie lol.
Volpe-de-Glacio Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 I don't even have a back story. I just kind of materialized at my first MTNBB tourney. Thank providence for Star's quirk of spouting techniques in Japanese during class.
Klein Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 My backstory is since I was about ten years old I'd been playing card games, RTS and turn based strategy games, and fighting games on a casual basis, and meeting up at Snipe's place to do all of the above for about as long. So a while back when Snipe introduced me to CT I went and messed around as Hulk colors Tager 'cus never changing colors bugged him a lot :P shortly before CT met the end of it's lifespan and CS came out I got off dial-up and moved to basic DSL, so I borrowed CT to see if it'd lag horribly and it worked fine. So I HAD to buy CS1 and play, a lot. I probably put over fifteen hundred matches in the first five months or so and in the process found out my favorite part of playing competitive games is improving in them. And then a while ago I got a PM on bb.com about a certain local tournament from Middy, and here I am today.
Papstr Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Same. Though I don't remember seeing you at that tournament jackie lol. Metaknight for lyfe
LastStarSaviour Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 (edited) BACKSTORIES, LET'S GO!! Even though mine isn't much, I would have to say that mine dropped me into the fighting game scene completely by accident. See, I spent most of my days just playing casually, never really paying to much attention to fighters in general. This was, until one day when Calamity Trigger was released. I spent about a good two months passing the game by again and again. One day I finally decided to take a look at the game and mistook it for a J-RPG game (I never read the game description). So I bought it liking the character designs and the cool looking art on the case. When I got home however, I was in for a big surprise with it being a fighter. I was displeased at first due to my SF4 experiences and I thought of it as a waste of money. I then played the game as very little as possible. That changed after browsing YouTube and happened to watch my first japanese BB match, and thus my interest was re-sparked. Thus, diving into the world of CT I picked up Ragna and Haku-Men at first, still playing the game very casually still. As I continued to play the game and watch japanese players, I came across R-1. Little did I know that he would deep-root my love for the game forever and introduce me to my main, Noel. Seeing him use her gave me a whole new respect and love for the game. So over time I took Noel more seriously (learning combos, set-ups, tricks, and even going to ranked matches and playing her online). I got a lot of positive feedback from players about the way I played her and I was pumped with a sense of pride. When CS1 first released I was hype but also longing for people who also played the game that I could get together and play with. However, as much research as I did I couldn't find anyone in Clarksville. So I played CS1 sadly, that was until I ran into a player named AlphaKami (Heh, we should all know who this is). He also played Noel and we had many intense matches against each other and thus became quick friends. also, as the last week of the month that we had become friends approached, he sent me a message telling me about a tournament that he was entering. I was shocked to learn that it was in Nashville and was even more surprised that it was possible for me to go. So, with that, I headed off to Nashville to take part in my first-ever fighting game tournament. Upon entering I felt the satisfaction of fighting other players and also the crushing pain of my first defeat by Astaroth. This fueled me even more and soon I was hooked on BB. Over time, I met Volpe and soon we began to have BB friendlies to prepare and became solid friends from there. This is a bit sentimental but meeting everyone (dispite how I feel at times) has honestly changed me and i'm thankful for the experience. My backstory comes to an end there, sorry if it was long or off-topic. Edited February 16, 2012 by LastStarSaviour
Grimstar Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Hmm.. backstories eh... Why the hell not... Once upon a time little Grim didn't go by Grim at all. He had no cool name to go by, but used "Dart" in games where I had to name my character, cause wtf would I want to be called Billy the pokemon trainer for? Anywho, I have a friend who goes by Raven for his tag, and we've been friends since middle school (we're 23 now). He had always been into Guilty Gear during those days, and showed me how it worked. I screwed around on it, never really getting good at it. Mainly used Kye. I ended up buying Isuka (lolwut) and that was the first "fighting game" I ever owned next to Soul Calibur, which I had always played since 2, just not on any decent level. 1, 2 skip a few years later, I moved out here to murfreesboro and he was still in nashville at the time. We hadn't talked much due to lives being busy, distance, etc. Well I went into Play N Trade up here one day bored looking for something to play, when out of fucking nowhere I saw Blazblue sitting on the shelf. I was like "lolwtf is this weeabboo shit. MAKERS OF GUILTY GEAR?!" I always wanted to try a fighting game again, was sick of RPGs and shooters, so I bought it on a whim, called Raven to tell him about it, expecting him to not have heard of it, and he was like "Oh yeah I have it, but no one to play with, I mainly play SF4." So we ended up playing online BB where I was maining (scrub)Ragna and he uses Hakumen. We weren't bad I supposed... So eventually we were getting more into it, and wanting others to play with. And I was still cautious about trying SF4. Anyways, we looked up online if there was anywhere to meet players, and find out about Game Galaxy. And mother of fuck what are the chances of this shit... We go up there on some random week day, and just so fucking happen by miracle that TAD'S MOTHER FUCKING ASS IS THERE! The fucking shadow, guy who lives in some different bone fuck nowhere town every week. We happen to come up there a RANDOM day he's there. I think he was helping Jason with something. And at this time, the BB cabinet was still installed. So once he saw we were playing it, he came over and beat our asses at it. At the time neither of use had used a stick before, so it was difficult to play him like that. Hours of gaming and chatting later, he tells us about K.i.T. where we first met the man we all know and love (yes homo) Astaroth. Midnight was also there, being a bitch using Nu, so fuck him I didn't talk to his dumbass he beat Bishop in finals. This is also where Lee made his first "omfg this dude is a badass mofo" impression on me. Not gonna lie, when we first played I was hesitant and curious on how to approach facing him. I got stomped. Repeatedly. No mercy. I was wtfing all the way home to mama. After the tournament (I think I got 7th or something?) we met with Tad outside and I met Phil there, realized he lives in murfreesboro too, etc, etc. Then we dropped off the face of the earth for quite a while. Raven moved to Washington. I had no one left to play. So I finally said fuck it. I bought SSF4, played some more BB, and somehow made it out to the very first MTNBB tourney. I don't even remember how I heard about it. I think Lee told me over XBL, but I honestly can't even remember. EDIT: Actually now that I think about it, I ran into Phil posting on dustloop and messaged him about Blazblue, then we found Chandler and Naimat, and we all got together and played at Phil's one day didn't we? That's probably how I ended up hearing about the tourney and going. So I went in my buddies' stead since he now lives so far away, I wanted to pick up our old hobby and get more involved, not let that die ya know? And here we are today. The Grimstar you all know and love. Although at first I tried the name "Tyrant Rave" Sol's old move... before I met Patrick and thought "wow Boomcube is cool, it's two random words!" trying to think of a name I could use like that... Ended up watching that stupid anime Soul Eater on Netflix.... There's a character named Black Star on the show, and I thought it sounded kinda cool, but needed some work... Then I thought "Hey, he's working for the Grim Reaper... Oh shit... BLACK REAPER!!! ...no fuck that... GRIM STAR!!?!?!? YES" make it all one word, try it on XBL, it's not taken so I snag that shit and here I am ladies!
Astaroth136 Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Hahaha! Best. Backstory. Ever. Actually, just the way he described it was great. "Wow, Boomcube is cool, it's two random words!" killed me.

Astaroth136 Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 (edited) ASTAROTH BACKSTORY GOGOGO! I've always been into strategy and fighting games. My very first taste of offline competition came from a Pokemon Red/Blue tournament in Hickory Hollow Mall. A friend and I went (only being 12 or so at the time), got our Mews, and competed. There was one moment that sticks out. I had a really long, intense match with someone twice my age and size, and everyone crowded around. He had used Dig on my Jolteon, and everyone was yelling, "SWITCH OUT!" I knew it wouldn't kill him though, so he took the damage, leaving him at 2 or 3 HP. Used Thunderbolt and won the match. Fast-forward a long time from then, when I played Soul Calibur 4. I stuck with that game and took it somewhat seriously. I watched tournament vids and posted to 8WayRun religiously. One day, I somehow read about a tournament in Game Galaxy and decided to go. Got scraped 0-2, because I didn't realize it was PS3-only. About a year later, a friend drove me there again for another SC4 tournament (my first KiT). This time, I was ready. I fought Milln in one of my matches, but we didn't really talk much. I fought my way through most of the winner's bracket before losing to a good Kilik. Went all the way to grand finals, being pit against Lil Majin. Astaroth mirrors suck, so I went to my secondary Nightmare. I reset the bracket, but lost 3-1 in the new set. Got second, but it paid over $100 because the tournament was so big. I was also introduced to Blazblue at this time. Someone was using Tager on the arcade machine, and I watched in awe. My eyes got big and bubbly like you see in your every-day anime stuff, and I was drooling like Homer Simpson. Once I got home, I instantly researched the game and squeeled that it was getting a console port. This is where things get fuzzy. I can't remember if I attended my second KiT or Milln/KO's tournament in Hickory Hollow next. This might be correct, but don't hold me to it. Next, I was bored one day and literally Googled "Tennessee tournaments." An SSBM/B forum popped up first, and it detailed a tourney with Smash and Blazblue. I was in there! So, I went to Hickory Hollow for a third time and played some BB competitively, for the first time. This is when I met Tad. We had REALLY close matches in losers finals, and I barely won. Phil (whom I had also just met) was in grand finals with me, and I squeaked the wins against his Taokaka. Shortly after, another KiT rolls around. Like Billy said, I met him and his friend Raven there. We all had our foreveralone Blazblue corner for a while and had what felt like hundreds of matches. Tournament time rolls around, and Lil Majin is my second match. Again, I despise grappler mirrors, so after we went 1-1, I counterpicked with V-13. Sure, I felt bad, but I wanted fight money. I lost to a Bang player (not Naimat), and placed 4th after losing to another V-13. I could've easily beat that V-13 player if I had held atomic collider for just a split-second more. Profound sadness. I can't really remember the first time I met Star, Chandler, and Naimat. I wanna say at the 2nd Milln tournament, but my memory is bad. I know Papstr and Pickle were at the first Milln tourney I attended though. Edited February 16, 2012 by Astaroth136

Well, glad that a silly mix up like that lead you here nonetheless. edit: http://iplaywinner.com/news/2012/2/16/guilty-gear-xx-accent-core-plus-coming-to-xbla-and-psn.html HNNNNNNGH WOOOOOOOT I WAS FUCKING RIGHT!!! @____@ if it has blazblue's godlike netcoding, this is going to be tooo awesome!!! My backstory: So I really got into fighting games when I was playing need for speed high stakes on my computer and my brother comes in and is like "wtf is that shit" and he pulls out an NES that he borrowed from his friend. We were too poor to afford a console of any kind at that time which was around gamecube, ps2, xbox era and I didn't have any of hte previous consoles so the NES felt very new to me. He had 3 games SFII super turbo, MK2, and some wrestlemania game and I immediately fell in love. All we knew how to do was spam hadoukens, jumping roundhouse, and crouching roundhouse. Because SFII didn't have a command list in the game and we didnt have the manual we basically taught ourselves how to do shoryuken by realizing that sometimes when trying to do a hadouken we would get a shoryu. so basically we thought you had to do like half circle back half circle forwards. Fast forward and I finally get a ps2. I see a game called CvS2 on the shelf at gamexcrazy and I see Sagat who I immediately recognize from SFII and some cool looking dude pointing at me telling me to buy the game (kyosuke). I didn't know what the game was about but I had to buy it cause it looked cool. I remember getting blisters from using the ps2 pad and doing the motions for specials. To keep playing I had to take electrical tape and wrap it around my thumb. and even though I had no one to play it with, and i thought no one in the world played this obscure game (since all the kids around me were into things like GTA) I just felt compelled to learn it. I remember I spent days trying to do Rock's super that isn't raging storm. Only like five years too late did I realize that the game was HUGE. It's just everyone who played it was like 10 years older than me lol.
Jackie Chandler Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 These backstories are great. I always find these things really interesting. It's kind of funny thinking I probably ran into at least Papstr/Midnight before MTN, and- edit: http://iplaywinner.com/news/2012/2/16/guilty-gear-xx-accent-core-plus-coming-to-xbla-and-psn.html HNNNNNNGH OHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGOD WHY WON'T MY COMPUTER SCREEN ACCEPT CURRENCY Saw that earlier, and oh my god, Milln, can we run it can wecanwecanwecanwecanwecanwecanwecanwe?
