Vocal Sabre Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 What I'm getting at is this: I want us to pick up Guilty Gear, but for us to be competent at it we really have to devote some time to it. Time that is already limited due to school, work, etc. So, something needs to be sacrificed (BB). Are you guys willing to invest in getting a PS2, a copy of guilty gear, and a converter (if needed)? And are you passionate enough to want to get good at it? Meaning sitting down in training mode and learning combos, oki setups, setting up get togethers to grind, etc. Right now, is a good point to get started in practicing GG. Seeing as both P4:U and UNIB, games the majority of you are interested in, isn't out yet. And if we start playing and growing guilty gear, maybe we can revive and get veteran players from Memphis and the rest of the south to start coming to tournaments making the scene even bigger and more competitive. I have GGXXACP on PSP And I play it almost everyday. So as far as passion is concerned I'm good to go. And If anyone is not willing to get it on the PS2, I suggest a hacked psp. I'm willing to hack it for you if need be. And I'm all for dropping BB for GG.
Papstr Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 Are you guys willing to invest in getting a PS2, a copy of guilty gear, and a converter (if needed)? Are you not aware of the upcoming XBLA/PSN release next millennium?
Jackie Chandler Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 With the 360/PS3 versions of Accent Core coming out some time this year, it'd be ridiculous to expect people to run out and buy a copy of the game and a PS2. I also think replacing Blazblue with Guilty Gear would be like replacing Arcade Edition with Third Strike. GG/3S are probably more competitive and whatnot, but shutting out their predecessors from the lineup makes it more difficult to bring more people into the community. People might look at us playing Guilty Gear and think "oh, that's all they play and it's been out for such a long time. I'd get destroyed," and not think any more of it. Blazblue being the newer game in the series with at least one more game planned to be released means it has potential not only to bring people into MTN, but get people into Guilty Gear as well. Hell, I know *I* wouldn't be considering picking Guilty Gear back up if it weren't for Blazblue. So yeah, for the existing community, I think it'd be a good idea to run Guilty Gear. However, the potential growth for a Guilty Gear community will likely be limited to the release of Accent Core on 360/PS3 (at least until a new one is announced), and whenever someone decides to drop it, it'll likely have a serious impact on its tournament standing (just like Blazblue).
Tophatmoffet Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 (edited) I personally think the 'potential growth' of a guilty gear community is severely dependent on if anyone else gives a shit when its out on pstriple/box. If there's no one else with a big a scene, and if there's not a huge resurgence of people willing to play it, then there's not much of a point. As much as I love guilty gear and as good a game that it is, I have to concede the fact that its an old game. Of course I speak only from personal experience and simple conjecture, but I'm worried that if this doesn't catch major interest, then its just going to sustain the community of a dying community and not grow it. But then again I'm just some fucking guy. I don't know whats required to get guilty gear to EVO, or whatever. Not to mention that this is just a re-release, and not improving on the game in any way. Not saying it needs it. I have no idea what the guilty meta is like. Seemed like every character I was interested in was top tier though. Again, just my conjecture. Not to be grim or anything. Are you not aware of the upcoming XBLA/PSN release next millennium? That's a hopeful estimate. One day far in the future, the wise ones will look upon us now, and whispered in hushed tones about the guilty gear rerelease. It will cross generations and start wars. You just wait and see. Edited April 17, 2012 by Tophatmoffet
LastStarSaviour Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 (edited) The Guilty Gear conversation again? We've talked about this game about 50 times already and we've all talked about how much we like love the game already but we still haven't taken any affirmative action on it. Mind you I do realise that it's a matter of accessiblity for many people but the fact is we have plenty of people who can and have brought set-ups to MTN so we can play it and no one other than a few of us have. If we're that hyped for it, shut up, sit down and play the dang game already. If you're worried about training, don't be. It's actually pretty nice having many of us, excluding gods like Tad start off playing the game at the same time as everyone else (plus we have the guy as a godlike teacher, why hesitate?). I think it'd be the type of thing that would help us grow as a community and really teach us how to get together, discuss, and help each other in a fighting game. Plus, we get that face-to-face human experience. No need to wait for that Net-Play stuff. With that said, I'll try and bring a set-up next MTN (We need to run a side-event or something). If we're going to build the scene back up we need to do it now, not after some XBL/PSN release. I personally want to get into the game (Despite Dizzy being low-as-hell tier). Also Naimat, once the game does release for XBL/PSN you will definitely see a lot more of me. You're the closest person to me in terms of travel distance so you'll become my new lab partner, there's no escaping it. Edited April 17, 2012 by LastStarSaviour
Volpe-de-Glacio Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 I'm hyped for Guilty Gear, and always down to play it. Regular get-togethers would be pretty sweet, since I won't be able to get on netplay on 360 for awhile. As for Skullgirls, I'll keep playing it, but I don't have much hope for it. Zoning seems way too powerful and mashing seems to be rewarded constantly.
Astaroth136 Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 After Powerup reflection: So you guys after Powerup I felt kinda eh about playing BB with the number of turnouts, it being a side tourney. When the reason I play fighting games is to play other people and there aren't that many people playing my effort doesn't feel worth it. I only play it because there are some of you who do. I was wondering though are you guys losing interest in BB, for whatever reason? Okay, you say this, then you consider picking up GG? LOLWAT? Good luck finding non-majors running GG as a side tourney. You better stick to BB if you at least want a tourney. You guys get still get decent numbers for BB, so I have no idea why you'd all drop it. Ohio isn't a BB-centric area, and in fact, Bama and Georgia both have BB players. This means that MWC should have decent numbers for that game. I play SC5 and Marvel, two very dead games in mid-TN. I told Milln to get rid of SC5 in the lineup, but keeping Marvel seems right since it does interest our Bama counterparts. Some of them are coming up THIS month to play it.
Top_Cat Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 (edited) Woah I've been playing too much league. Expect me at April's tournament ;D Oh, and I'm totally up for seriously getting into guilty gear whenever it gets its psn/xbl release. Edited April 17, 2012 by Top_Cat
Klein Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 Astaroth has a good point. If you want a decent sized community I'm thinking GG is not, and probably will not be the game for you even after PSN/XBL release.
LastStarSaviour Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 (edited) We don't have to drop BB, but since many of us did say we wanted to play Guilty, then it's still a good idea to start up something anyway. Why ignore the games we want to play just because of it never going to a big tournament? Stop thinking so huge and just worry about starting things up small and having it build over time. I'd rather have five extremely skilled players sitting in a corner and playing as apposed to fifty terrible ones making the game look bad. Let's use the down-time to get good, then try for a revival. Volpe and me have been doing the same thing with AH3. Want to know why we haven't stopped playing it? Because numbers doesn't matter, sure when we get on net-play there aren't many people to practice against. However, we have come across a bunch a really good, dedicated players who still remain and plan to remain for a long time. Thus, they're the people we've been training against and learning from. Think smaller, people. Edited April 17, 2012 by LastStarSaviour
Jackie Chandler Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 It's silly for people to not play a game because "nobody else does." There's no sense in quitting something you enjoy playing just to become part of the problem. As long as people just play what they enjoy, there will always be a community for it, and there will always be opportunities for it to grow.

In BB's case, for me it's not about the population of players getting smaller, but the current community of players we have. I find it very hard to enjoy matches with many of the people I run across in the BB community mostly because of their extreme egos and butt-hurt personalities. Plus, most of the ones who are good either just begin looking down on just about anyone they don't approve of or just flat out start trolling the people who are trying to get better. I can tell that for a lot of new BB players it's really hard to get any experience against higher-level players or information for that matter. Everyone has something to prove and it's kind of idiotic. Again though, that's just how things are currently, it might change, then again it might not.
Astaroth136 Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 For those really bored, go to this: http://www.majorleaguegaming.com/prizefights Click on the polls tab on the right, and spam votes for SC5. Beware that the options do randomly switch positions, so don't accidentally vote for MK.

Well, I helped push it up over 50%, so my work there is done.
Seiki Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 Too many fighting games, not enough time. I just hope that those of you who did say you will be picking up GG will stick with it.

Do you mean 'we' as in the entire Blazblue community or 'we' as in the TN people? Either way, I disagree. In my experience the Blazblue community as a whole, even the people who occasionally show off big egos or get salty just wanna chill out and play games. And it's hard for anyone to get a hold of higher level players, travel cost and stuff, ya know? And hard to get information for Blazblue, WUT? Dustloop has all kinds of information, and if you ask just about anyone in the community a question they can answer, they will, even if some are rude about it. Just my two cents.
LastStarSaviour Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 (edited) I'm referring to most of the people i've encountered who hail from DL, it's a much different experience than you'd know. Also, I find a lot of DL's information to be a bit untrustworthy Edit: (Guess i'll elaborate on this a bit. I'm referring to most match-ups and what-not. Frame data on the other hand is pretty solid) Edited April 17, 2012 by LastStarSaviour
LuminAbyss Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 The match-up forums need a lot of work yeah. But ask the right people and you'll get great info on them. Ask me about any of Ragna's match-ups.
Jackie Chandler Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 Ask me about any of Ragna's match-ups. Ragna vs. Ragna, how do?
Tophatmoffet Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 Ragna vs. Ragna, how do? DP on wake up and clash dp's until the match ends. Fail to mixup each other for at least 30 seconds.
LuminAbyss Posted April 18, 2012 Posted April 18, 2012 RAGNA VS RAGNA IN ONE SENTENCE Outspace them to victory.
