MFW I find out Jin's CT ice mechanic is in P4A.

GAME IS OFFICIALLY SHIT

I can't see this applying in Japan. Arcades are actually successful there, and heavily sponsored, so it doesn't make sense for them to be unable to afford the machines.

they're actually not successful, at least not to the extent most people think, they're just more successful than in the US. In reality it's dying out over there and even a few major arcades have closed down. arcade machines are WAY too expensive.

Something being successful isn't the same thing as being profitable. An arcade doesn't necessarily view games and new content the same way as players do. An arcade cabinet isn't something you can just plug up to the Internet and download a patch for, you know that, right? Now, it's getting better, but in most cases arcade cabinets are not just a box with a console inside. It's a perf board with an Fton of wires, you know this too, right? To perform an upgrade, no matter how minuscule, the cabinet has to be shut down for an undetermined amount of time while the upgrade is performed, parts are exchanged, and all that stuff. I think you're underestimating how much up front cash it takes to do this, in addition to the downtime which equals money lost if they do it during business hours, or if they do it after close/before open the extra wages to pay the operator or technician.

Now consider that there is a row of these of varying qualities; there are standard cabs, deluxe cabs, etc. If its not cost-effective to perform an update and it can't make back the money to at least break even, let alone be a source of income, it will bury the establishment.

Additionally consider that not every arcade is this huge, double-decker, triple-decker that a lot of people have in their heads that that's the only thing that exists in Japan. A lot of places are Game Galaxy size or smaller, and a lot of places are a little larger. They come in all sizes. I would be wholly unsurprised if maybe 10, 30% of all the bb cabs are upgraded.

And I'm sure you're going to disagree with something I said due to some preconceived notion. That's why I don't bother explaining things very often anymore.

Phone post. Was so scared it would crash and I'd lose everything hahaha

I knew the process was expensive, I was just (over)estimating how successful they were by the quality of the establishments I've seen. Thanks for essentially calling me a dumbass. The only thing I could disagree with is your nitpicking. No business venture is considered successful if it doesn't turn a profit.

@Eshi

Yep. Resistance to upgrade actually caused a big controversy over Arcana Heart a couple years back for SBO if I remember correctly.

@Volpe/Star: You can feel like I called you a dumbass if you want, if you crave victimization, but I didn't. I love you guys, I just don't feel like talking shop every time a question comes up.

It'd be hard to come to pre-conceived notions if we, you know, finished any of the discussions that were sparked. At the very least it'd be better than dropping a generalized statement and telling people to let their imaginations wander and come to false conclusions, because at that point people have to assume that you don't know something even if you might actually know something. But don't take my word for it, like Naimat says, I apparently always say crazy things that have no basis whatsoever anyways.

Also, it's kind of hard to believe that arcades aren't doing well. Especially since whenever I see the inside of one the cabinets look beautiful and the place itself is spacious. As a matter of fact, the last P4U stream I watched they had what i'm assuming to be a giant (around 80 or so inches) television or a projector, not sure which one though, hooked up to the cabinets there so people could watch matches. If this isn't a big indicator as to the arcades' profit margin, I don't know what is. Also, i've never envisioned japanese arcades as some extravagent, double or triple-decker building, but they certainly look more accomadating.

@Milln: I like how apparently "I feel like you called me a dumbass" now, that's legit.

Also, if you don't feel like engaging in something that pops up on a forum I recommend not saying anything at all then. As people will be expecting a discussion to break loose. I was under the assumption that that was what forums were for but i guess not. Stay Facebook status, Dustloop.

Most people (the term I used) do, simply because they don't know any better and I honestly don't know where they get the idea from. I can only point fingers at anime. I agree that they might be more spacious, but so are our big arcades. Take any Dave and Buster's or um.. Oh what is it.. The other company that does stuff like that..

You told me that you expected me to give a knee-jerk, illogically stupid response for whatever reason. Make me look like I'm snarfing for no reason if you want, but I don't see any other way that can be interpreted. I don't crave victimization because I'm not the sort to remember something like this. I was just pointing out how assholish that came across as.

I actually based my statement on the streams I've seen. Their arcades are always equipped with obviously high quality cabinets that even include comfortable seating, and they line the walls. Their tournaments are always packed and well-organized.

Anime, I laughed hard as hell at this Milln. Also, I need to visit Dave and Busters, i've never seen the inside of the place myself.

In other news, P4U has short-hops, stay Godlike.

I don't think I've ever seen an argument over the conceptualization of arguments, let alone one that went on for more than a page.

But yeah, Milln's right about the Arcana Heart thing. Taken straight from Wikipedia regarding SBO:

On March 27, 2007, the large video arcade mi-ka-do wrote on its blog that there would be an upgrade of Arcana Heart (known as Arcana Heart FULL) released before Tougeki was played. It was not said how much the upgrade would cost, except that it would be for a per-machine basis and that it would be "expensive for such minor upgrades", comparing it to games such as Vampire Savior, Vampire Savior 2 and Street Fighter Zero 3 (Known as "Street Fighter Alpha 3" in the US) which were all upgraded free-of-charge. Because of this upgrade, combined with the fact that it would be so expensive, the Tougeki arrangers choose to bend the rules for Arcana Heart players:

The final in Tokyo would use Arcana Heart FULL

Players were free to choose to qualify either with the original Arcana Heart, or Arcana Heart FULL

If players qualified with the original Arcana Heart, they were free to change character in the finals.

According to the blog, this will demotivate players to participate in the Arcana Heart tournament because it is almost pointless to train for it unless their local arcade hall pays the upgrade price, which many smaller businesses cannot afford. In fact, they warned, smaller arcade halls may go out of business if the game industry continues in this way.

I can't bring a Gear setup, I've loaned all my PS2's and copies out, along with every extra stick I've got.

MM's with me in Gear only valid on AC, not the re balance. Also, don't do it, you're all free.

You're all free.

This be true, my GG interest keeps dropping like a rock due to lack of gameplay. I think I need to just focus on P4U for now.

Edit: Also, if you don't think this is my new signature, oh boy.

I'm probably just going to wait for R. I've got too much shit on my plate atm. It also took me like 30 seconds to decipher Tad's post. I need a nap.

AND MIGHT I REMIND EVERYONE THAT PAPSTR IS THE CURRENT REIGNING UNDEFEATED CHAMPION OF SAMURAI KIRBY.

Y'all gonna get bodied at the only game I know how to play.

Papstr, the only person with superior reflexes that doesn't win fighting game tournaments. :(

More like. Doesn't win anything. If you told my buddies I had "superior reflexes" they'd laugh in your face. lol.

TONS of damage.

TOTALLY NOT AN EDIT: I can supply a 360 with Skullgirls

@Star&Buster's: The closest one we have is the one in Opry Mills Mall, I believe. You wanna talk about success and profitability, THAT'S it right there. They can afford the high as F rent of huge malls they tend to be placed in and have lots of huge, deluxe machines. It was the first shop that opened back up after the flood, too! Tells ya something!

@Papstr and Samurai Kirby: this morning I announced on Twitter Samurai Kirby has a FIFTY DOLLAR BONUS prize to first place.

2 BB, 3 Super Skrulls.

It looked nice as heck from the outside when I saw it.

In other statements, I didn't even realize MWC was this weekend, I lawl'ed after I suddenly reminded myself. Milln, this is the one time i'm going to enter a Kof tournament (despite my better judgement). I'll be entering BB as well (despite my better judgement again). And yes, I will be taking first in BB this time. Just some food for thought. And yes, i'll be entering Skullgirls too possibly(despite my better judgement). I've actually been training so I advise anyone who's into the game to not take me lightly.

@Astaroth: OMG! THOSE CONVERTERS! I need to buy one as soon as possible.

Posted (edited)

Wow, thanks for bringing this to our attention Astaroth. This thing sounds really cool. I'll be picking one up for sure. I've been waiting for this kind of thing forever.

I *will* say that I'm a bit wary of it until I try it, though. I had high hopes for the XCM Adapter (which is actually mentioned by Cronus in one of the comments), but it absolutely sucked for fighting games. It would consistently read a QCF motion as 2266, which for most (if not all) fighting games, didn't amount to anything. There's also the issue of whether it'll work for sticks or not. And I don't know how the fuck they intend to let people use their Wiimotes on 360/PS3. They'll be missing at least two buttons if using both the Wiimote + Nunchuck (LS and RS), and a Right Stick/D-Pad no matter what.

That said, the only one of those that would apply to me would be the first one, so I'll be buying one launch day unless pre-launch reviews suck. If any of you guys are on the fence about it, I can let you know my opinion as soon as it comes in.

EDIT: I just found out pre-orders are available here for $70 and $80, and that the pre-orders are scheduled to ship out on July 15th. I just went ahead and pre-ordered a $70 one. I really hope this isn't a waste, haha.

Forward circle to down would have given 6622, which is Noel's running Haida, the hardest input I've ever foxed with. GDLK converter.:eng101:
