Klein Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 It's a bit too blurry for my taste. Yours isn't explicit enough for my taste.
LuminAbyss Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Klein gets points for that one, sorry Axis.
Urichinan Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Yeah, my parents said the same thing. Getting noticed in the first place is an honor. Even if it isn't with a great company. I think I'm going to pass on this one though. I just can't bring myself to trust a company that's known for causing issues. Hopefully a bigger company will one day notice me as well! :P

IT'S LIKE WHEN YOU FIRST START BUILDING CREDIT YOU GET INVITES FROM ALL THE JUNKY CREDIT CARD COMPANIES WITH OUTRAGEOUS INTEREST. YOU DON'T WANNA DO IT BUT IT'S LIKE CRAP I COULD REALLY USE THIS SO YOU APPLY FOR ONE AND THEY APPROVE YOU AND YOU ARE DETERMINED TO STAY ON TOP OF YOUR BUSINESS AND PAY YOUR STUFF ON TIME AND YOU THEN CAN APPLY FOR CREDIT AT BETTER CARD COMPANIES WITH NOT A TON OF INTEREST AND APPLY FOR HUGE FINANCING LOANS WHEN YOU BUY A BRAND NEW HONDA ACCORD LX-P WITH LEATHER INTERIOR. YOU GOTTA WORK TO BE A CREDIBLE PERSON. MANG. MANG. HEY LITTLE MANG. I SAY DO IT. AND SPAM MTNG EVERYWHERE INSTEAD OF SUCKTASTIC GAMING SO YOU GET KICKED OUT AND THEN YOU CAN BE ALL LIKE YEEEEAAHHH BOIII SWAGMASTAH PLAYAPLAYA RIGHT HERE I NEED A SPONSOR, WHUTTUP COMPANIES I'M RIPE FOR THE PICKIN'.
Urichinan Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Can't tell if serious... But either way. Lolno
ZomB Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Urichinan, I would advise you just to be straightforward with them. You could say something along the lines of "I've heard a lot of rumors but I'm willing to give you guys a chance, but I'm not really in a financial situation where I can take a lot of risks. I hope you guys can understand but I won't be able to follow through on anything unless I'm able to hold concrete proof of payment etc" (basically get your self sponsored up front) If they're gonna be shady they'll just turn that shit down, and if they pay for you to go somewhere and then later don't... you go to the first event and then just stay home for the second one.

Perhaps you can milk an advanced stipend from them to ensure that you have the sponsorship cash prior to a tourney. That way you can see if they're legit or not without risking a bullshit situation. Either way, that's fuckin' awesome, man. Personally I gave up on the whole pro fightan gaemz dream. The FGC as it is now is whack. As far as I can tell, you need mad talent to make it big on your own without a skilled scene to help you grow. Edited December 4, 2012 by Volpe-de-Glacio
ZomB Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Volpe with that mind-reading tech. Just try to set yourself up in a win-win situation and don't go along with anything that might backfire...
Grimstar Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 (edited) Uri look at it this way... Will other potential sponsors have an opinion based on what you do? Say you take up the offer with these guys, other sponsors likely won't try to take you away from the sponsor you currently have, so you may end up being stuck with the potential crappy guys until you leave or w/e. Then there's the possibility that you turn these guys down, what would other sponsors think of that? Just food for thought... I'd give it some time and not jump to a conclusion just yet. Edited December 4, 2012 by Grimstar
Urichinan Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 I suppose I could go down that route. I really would like the opportunity to make it out for majors like NEC, ECT and FR. I'll think about it. Thanks for the input everybody. <3
Grimstar Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 I'd say if you take up the offer now the only thing you have to lose is other potential sponsors (assuming anyone is currently looking at you), however what you gain is basically experience for your tourney resume :P Granted it could apparently screw you over... So... If I were in your shoes I'd probably take the offer and run with it, if they screw you over drop them and try to get some publicity in doing so and state that you're actively looking for a new sponsor.

I think the real important thing when it comes to attracting sponsorships is performance, as Astaroth already said. Dip your toes in the proverbial waters with these guys, but keep your focus on what's most important - your love for fighting games and your drive to improve. If you keep a good, professional attitude, don't burn any bridges, and continue to up your game and place well, I think you won't suffer for want of sponsors.
Tophatmoffet Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 I don't really have any advice in particular for you that hasn't been said already, but good on ya! I hope you continue to be successful in your quest.
Jackie Chandler Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Uri, I think you should take this opportunity to contact other sponsors and see if you can interest them in sponsoring you. Just present it in a way that lets them know another sponsor is interested in promoting you, but that you wanted to see what other sponsors are offering before you make a final decision. Take this chance to make sponsors compete for you! ;3
Seiki Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Uri screw that sponsor. I can hook you up with real legit ones. I got Star sponsored by Coca Cola and they provide him free powerade. I'm currently sponsored by Kelloggs and Trojan condoms. I'm currently in talks with Victoria Secret. Gonna get a special gamer lingerie lineup. Ya know for dem gamer gurls. Right now I can get you a Dollar General sponsorship. You start small, place in some tournaments and then we'll talk about the big leagues like Viagra and the Mexican drug cartel. The sky's the limit kid.
Alphakami Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 I have a different idea... Most of you seem to agree that the potential sponsor is dog shit. I love to find angles to cut corporate out of their cut of dick riding Devin's potential. I'd put my money in on MTN's community sponsoring him. No joke. Kinda like KickStarter.com or whatever. I've certainly recognized his talent, and I'd throw in. I don't wanna get paid off his back, but I'd be happy to get paid back, and that's all I need. If I don't, I understood the 'risk' going in. I've got 100 bucks to get it started on the first event we send him to, and I'd be happy to do the job of the sponsor. Getting his and his family's needs met for the trip and all the planning required. It seems like a good idea to me, anyway....
Urichinan Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Awwwwww. <3 You guys. <33333 Super cat face. :3 I'm still talking with them. I won't cut them out just based off of what they've done in the past. It's unprofessional (Although, so was posting about it before getting a lot of information. Which was kind of a mistake. Although I REALLY appreciate all the support from you guys. <3 again <333) to dismiss them without actually hearing what they have to say. @Tad: Now that's an offer I would blatantly refuse. There's no way I would ever let you guys do that. Lol
Klein Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 I'd be tempted to sponsor you just because you dress classy and I could throw some classy jewelry at you and tell you to spread the word that I can do commissions, LOL.
Volpe-de-Glacio Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 It seems like a good idea to me, anyway.... Yesss. I've always thought it would be amazing if every scene sponsored players for majors and shit. I would definitely pitch in on somethin' like this if I wasn't broke, haha.
Jackie Chandler Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 (edited) I'd be willing to sponsor you with a pair of sunglasses, Uri. Because everyone needs a good pair of gasoline shades sunglasses. Yesss. I've always thought it would be amazing if every scene sponsored players for majors and shit. That would be really cool, but considering how some of us can't even afford to compete in tournaments sometimes as it is, I'm not sure it's in the cards for us. :P But on that note, I think it might be cool to have at least one tournament where instead of the winnings going into the top player(s) pockets, it goes into "sponsoring" them to go to a major(s). What would you guys think about that? EDIT: Also, on an unrelated note: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=RGfNuMKzwIE#t=7508s Hakumen confirmed for S tier. HAY SEUSS CHREESTO.
