Seiki Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 EVERYONE LISTEN!!!!!!! good. We all in one way or another can appreciate creativity and innovation especially when it relates to fighting games. There is this great program on NPR which talks about the creation of ideas and where they come from and after listening to it I have a new found perspective on innovation. It felt more universal, as if anyone in the world is capable of coming up with great new ideas and it helped motivate me and give me confidence in trying out new things in Gear which greatly boosted my ability to learn this game. So, as a Christmas present to me please listen to this http://www.npr.org/2012/06/06/154448804/where-ideas-come-from with your undivided attention. It may take some time before you understand the parallels between the topics they discuss and how it pertains to us as the fighting game community but nonetheless if anything you educated your minds a little bit more. Please do find the time to listen to it. It's really intriguing and I feel atleast some of you will appreciate it.
Klein Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 I love NPR, I'm all over this. Will edit with thoughts.

Seiki Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 (edited) I love TED talks, but personally I found a lot of these concepts to be self-evident. Not to say that I didn't enjoy the varied perspectives or that I didn't hear anything new, but the overall ideas they seemed to be trying to convey seem like they should be second nature to me. Which ideas specifically inspired you to change the way you look at your gameplay, or even just ignited your creative spark? ed3.354: givin it one more listen to make sure i'm not talkin outta my ass. got shit else to do #cripplelyfe I will admit I'm stumped as to how to relate these to innovating your mindset when it comes to fightan gamez. I also felt that these concepts were self-evident, at first, but really it was partially because what they say made so much sense that it felt like I knew about it all along, as if it was second nature. I do think I had the basic framework of the kinds of concepts they were talking about but that was all I had. They helped fill in a lot of blanks and provided me with more detail as to why I agreed with them. When my framework of these concepts were detailed with their explanations it painted a new picture and made me learn something new. So what I got out of it was two things: a)To trust my hunches more and to give myself more time to investigate ideas I may doubt at first. b)To be more considerate of other's ideas, even if what they say doesn't make sense to me, because like mine they could be hunches that lead to great new ideas. And like mine they also need to be given ample time to study. Sometimes even more because they weren't build with your mind's framework so it takes some more time to convert and format their idea into your brain's hard drive. That's not to say I haven't been doing those two things already. It's just I haven't been doing it enough and when I have there was doubt if it was the proper approach. That by combining both a) and b) you immensely increase your ability to come up with new ideas. As it pertains to me in fighting games I started to watch top japanese Johnny players play like Satou, DC, etc. and then tried to mimic their playstyles. I didn't mimic their playstyles as a means to win or to be used as my playstyle. I used them to understand broad concepts of Johnny like general spacing habits, general situations to toss coins, etc.Their is a difference between this and just watching vids of players playing. You will never be like Satou, or DC, etc. because everyone differs in the application of the same pool of knowledge so it is pointless to mimic their style to win. However what you can do when you watch Satou, DC, etc is being able to identify what the general principles they all follow by and thus create a detailed theme of the character which is really important when you are beginning to learn a character. As it pertains to fighting game community, and for all communities for that matter, is that we need to be more empathizing of other people's ideas instead of creating a stigma of harsh and pessimistic criticism. So the next time Star says something ridiculous, like "UNiB is a good game", I'm going to be more optimistic and be like "well its got the guard libra that's cool" instead of "its got Seth" Edited December 10, 2012 by Seiki
Seiki Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Also, thanks Volpe for listening and also for asking me for my thoughts, because in doing so I had to think about how to explain my reasoning and by doing that I had to investigate what I learned which made my own understanding clearer to me.
Volpe-de-Glacio Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Also, thanks Volpe for listening and also for asking me for my thoughts, because in doing so I had to think about how to explain my reasoning and by doing that I had to investigate what I learned which made my own understanding clearer to me. This is why I love shitting walls of text all the time on dustloop haha. When you encounter that resistance or that bumper in conflict with your ideas, it's a really great way to home in on exactly what you're thinking and polish your hunch into a full-blown idea. If more people were open to this kinda thing and gave feedback then I think scenes would get a lot more out of each other. I feel like sometimes people are too focused on being right instead of learning something when it comes to a debate.
Bane Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 Hell yes. Thank you, Jackie, for the new avatar. Wish I had noticed it sooner lol. Been pretty busy for the last week. @NPR: Sounds awesome, I'll definitely listen to that this afternoon, once I'm done with my exams.
Klein Posted December 10, 2012 Posted December 10, 2012 I liked it, I agree with what was said, and I see how it relates to fighting games. Not much to say on the matter though :P And shout outs to all the dudes at Game Galaxy, it was fun hanging out and playing, and watching Snipe fight real people other than me and our buddy Adam is like a parent watching their son grow up to be a man.
tret_tree Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 Contributing ideas to a conversation is only possible if you aren't in the process of re-inventing the hand axe. Jackie I love this avvy. <3 <3 <3
LastStarSaviour Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 Damn, having one of those chill-ass days where nothing matters. Get to just sit back, let my mind float off somewhere heavenly while listening to some tunes. Nothing beats this, absolutely nothing.

Alphakami Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 Guess who's on the front page of SRK again? That guy who won't let me sponsor him, that's who.
LastStarSaviour Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 You could be playing BlazBlue, that beats everything. Real talk. Dude, I have my PS3 unplugged, shoved in a closet downstairs somewhere. The last thing i've been thinking about today is fighting games. In fact, i'm so fucking chill right now, I don't even WANT to think about them. Tired of it all, I just want to....be at peace
Grimstar Posted December 11, 2012 Posted December 11, 2012 So... someone tell me about this Kaos Theory place. Is it legit? How many of "us" have been going there? I see quite a few have. It's expensive though isnt it?
