Kashell Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 Hey everyone! I realize that most of the folks here prefers to chat via Skype instead of this thread, but I wanted to post on here. The only time I really check my Skype account is when I'm on my phone. Unfortunately, I'm convinced that the application for Droid is nothing but a giant malfunction. I'm sure that the chat is very active, yet the application has a tendency to not "update" the chat so it looks like the last message that was posted was from a few days ago. By the time I get home from work, the last thing I want to do is look at my computer where Skype actually has some decent functionality. To say I hate Skype would be an understatement. ^^() Â So, I'm still here! I just don't have any luck with the preferred method of communication. I hope everyone is doing well.
Seiki Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 We should post in here more often anyways to let newcomers know there's a scene in middle TN. I was going to start a discussion on skype but i might as well do it here to promote activity.  Our scene is lacking a competitive drive. Now I know we are more than just competitors; we are friends and we come out to these monthlies and gatherings to hang out and have a good time. It does bug me though that those of us in the community who are putting real effort to get better at a game feel as though it is not worth it because most of us half ass our attempts at improving our skill level.  What I want from our scene is a more focused and competitively driven community that discusses matchups, grinds training mode, etc., but I don't know if that's what you guys want. If you guys want things to remain as they are then I don't blame you because it's still a fun and friendly environment. I know fighting games aren't the only thing in life, we all have a job, gf, family, lawns to mow or other responsibilities that take up our time and trying to get good at a fighting game is very time consuming.  There are some fighting game related reasons I think may contribute to the overall lack of competitive drive. 1) Our scene is divided in the games we choose to play. We don't have enough people playing any one game so everyone lacks competition in the game they play. 2) people are less inclined to pick up a game seriously if they have to play catch up with people already skilled at the game 3) People have the time but are lazy and don't want to put the work in to get better.  So this brings me to my proposed solution: We need a game or two that the community can be more focused on. A game that has the most of us playing who are knowledgeable and that has the interest of others who haven't picked it up yet. Guilty Gear Xrd is that game. I think a more unified scene in terms of the game being played will motivate people to want to get better since more people are playing it and will also allow newcomers to pick up and get better at a game more quickly because they have more people of various different levels to play with.  I know not all of us like Xrd and i am biased in my intentions with what I'm trying to do here. I want you all to play Xrd and I want you all to play it really well because I think it's a good game but I also know that an overall more competitive vibe can help make the game feel more enjoyable and rewarding to play which might be what is needed to get people who don't care for xrd now to enjoy it.  What are ya'll's thoughts on this?
Klein Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 I'd love to see MTNG take games seriously, and it seems like Papstr's already on this train, since he's been working on Xrd and UNIEL a lot. Y'all have my blessing, and any help I can offer, though I personally won't be taking Xrd seriously any time soon.Â
qoqonuts Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 I think keeping this thread more active is a good idea, even if it's just to talk about the same stuff that goes on in the Skype chat. Â It's more visible and that can help people find us easier. Â I will give Xrd a go, but I'm not going to promise anything.
Anne Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 Competitive drive has been gone for awhile, and Idk what to tell you to do about it. I'm going to Evo, and I've been to multiple majors and clawed my way to the top of Persona. At the same time I still play and win in other games too. And I did it basically on my own from TN because the drive was so dead here. Not trying to brag, but personally I've had it and worked with it, and I've offered to help out and tried to do my best. I put us up for a lot of events, I check interest, hell I even convince Jason to give us more arcade days and to throw money into our pots. We had a free entry $100 UNiEL tournament and it still only had 12 people, where maybe 4 playing actually cared to win.Idk what to tell you. It all comes down to whether people personally want that so I stopped pushing for it as a whole here and just focus on me. I can try and help and do what I can but I don't wanna force anybody to do anything or make them feel uncomfortable with a game anyways. As for Xrd my interest in the game is pretty low, but I can play it fomr time to time. I think the better idea is push people to be better fighting game players across a few different games and then have them focus on whatever they like as far as winning goes. Like currently you can just kind of learn optimal combos/set ups and you're already gonna get top 3 here because of a solid lack of fundamentals across the board. I don't wanna be mean but it's true, having traveled around and having more exposure to other types of play, TN is weak fundamentally and whenever people are pushed they just go "ah fuck it" and quit whatever game and go back to the lawn, then a new game comes out and there's hype for a week but somebody takes the time to learn it or a player with better fundamentals learn it and whoop everybody quits.
Jackie Chandler Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 I dunno, I have mixed feelings about where we're currently at.  On one hand, I wouldn't want people to drop the games they enjoy just to play the same game as everyone else - especially if they don't have fun with it.  But on the other hand, I don't want everyone to be playing different games altogether, because then nobody feels like any game is worth practicing because there's no one else to play it with.  That said, I think we need to approach things more like Milln did. We need three or four predetermined games to run in our monthlies, based on majority rule. That way, everyone will know well in advance what they need to be practicing for, and we'll get better turnouts because of the shared attention to multiple different games. Plus, that'd promote stronger fundamentals across the board, and invite more competitors our way.  Right now, I'd say our main candidates for monthlies are as follows:  - Guilty Gear Xrd  - Guilty Gear XX Accent Core +R  - Under Night In-Birth EXE Late  - Persona 4 Arena Ultimax  - Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax  - Puzzle Fighter (Seriously)  - Catherine (Also Seriously)  If there are any others I'm neglecting, let me know and I'll add them to the list.  Really though, I'd like everyone to vote on what they want to play most, and for us to come to a decision on what we'll be running for this month's tourney at least a week before then.  If you guys think this is a good direction to take, please use the few seconds it takes to vote for your top three or four games.  Looking forward to seeing what you guys have in mind!
Jackie Chandler Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Also, unrelated, but I'm hosting an Xrd lobby right now! Â The lobby ID is "q5gt" Â Hope to see you all there!
Seiki Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 I like Chandler's idea. We should take an interest check. My vote is Xrd, +R, UNIEL, Catherine.
Volpe-de-Glacio Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 I think Mellis has the right idea as far as improving as a scene. It's up to individuals to find their motivation and make time for taking shit seriously. Personally, though, I'm seeing a lot more of that happening recently. I feel the only reason we aren't more on that lab grinding/tech sharing status is how scattered we are in terms of skill/motivation/actual games we play. I'd like us all to play a wider range of games more seriously, but if we're gonna be real it's pretty obvious anything outside of Gear isn't going to be widely played. Â Atm I'm still interested in Xrd but I'm not really feeling Leo. Thinking I'll try Sin and Ky next, but if they don't click then I probably won't be playing Xrd anymore. I'd pick up +R if we started heading back to it. I'm also really starting to get into Street Fighter in general.
tret_tree Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Games I'd enter are Xrd, +R, and P4U2. I'd jump the hell on Catherine or Puzzle Fighter, but my bias is with Puzzle Fighter.
qoqonuts Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 I agree with Jackie as far as getting a better plan in place as far as organizing monthlies. Â The last couple month's have kind been done seat of the pants style with twisting people's arms for any kind of input. Â If we can get in a rhythm as far as what week of the month it's going to be on and stick to it, I think that would help. Â Or doing something like having it every 4th week rather than letting months dictate the timing. Â Just throwing ideas out. Â Add mystery game to that list. Â I at least would like to see it make a return. Â Maybe people could take turns bringing in a new game and running a quick single elimination tournament.
KhaosMuffins Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Aye yo people who are going to Final Round, Shinsyn needs a lineup of who is going to be in the 5v5 team tournament at Final Round ASAP https://twitter.com/ShinSyn Says y'all have until next Friday (March 13th) to decide. Not sure who's in charge of making the team so spread this to whoever needs to know about this.
Anne Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Next tournament is on 3/28. Location Game Galaxy AntiochCover is $10, 2 main games with $5 entry with the pot split 70/30 for 1st and 2nd place. All side games are free. For this month it'll be:MainGG XrdUNiELSideGGXXAC+RP4U2DFCPuzzle FighterI will run a maximum of 4 main games a month. If for some reason shit blows up and we have people paying for tons fo games I'll figure somethign out. A game will only be a main game if it can maintain 8+ entrants, if not it'll be a side game.
Seiki Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 I'll bring KoFXIII as well. Volpe play +R if you want cause there are people actively practicing it including myself.
Kashell Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 I'm glad that this forum isn't dead yet.  Despite me earning the platinum trophy in Xrd, I am still nowhere near the level I'd like to be at in terms of competitive play. Xrd (heck, the entire GG franchise) is the only fighter aside from Smash Bros. that I play regularly. I think it's a great series in terms of mechanics, of course, but I also enjoy all of the great characters and the lore. I kind of go through ebbs and tides with the game. Some days/weeks it'll be the only thing I focus on. I'm always down to play matches with everyone even if my skills aren't up to snuff.  But fighting games aren't the only genre I play. As evidenced by my user name, I usually play RPGs and most of you know that those are a huge time sink. This, coupled with my growing backlog of games that are just itching to be played to completion, makes it hard to dedicate the time the rest of you have done. Throw in the 8 hour work day, the activities outside of gaming, social events, etc. and you can imagine I can get pretty busy. The last thing on my mind is spending hours on end in the Training Mode. So it's kind of a catch 22 because I want to get better but there are other things I'd rather do/play.  I'm still kind of the "new guy" here, so do what you will with my two cents. My top pick for the game of focus is definitely Guilty Gear Xrd. I'll also suggest any of the Smash Bros. titles. I'd love to join everyone on 3/28 for that tournament even just to spectate, but I have a charity event that same day so we'll see if I can manage both. Finally, like I told Seiki from the beginning, I'd be more than happy to host a casual tournament/gathering at my place some time.
qoqonuts Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 I know you have some Skype issues, so you might not know that we're having fight nights at Game Galaxy Antioch on Saturdays with an airdasher focus. Â There's also fight nights Friday at the Score in Murfreesboro and Tuesday at GG Antioch again.
