Paladin's Quest was a really difficult RPG. HP was required for both life and it was used to cast magic.

I consider FF12 bad because the story is pretty bad and the characters are overall bad. The battle system while initially interesting, was really boring after a while. And not boring in the sense that once you figure out what to do it's a free ride... all RPGs are like that. But I actually really didn't like that all you did after a certain point in the game was hold forward. If the story and characters were better, I would have considered it to be okay. But the game could have used a better difficulty curve to make the battle system less boring.

One thing it had above 13 was that characters who weren't the controlled character could use reviving items and the customizable AI was better than the AI sets in 13. I'm not really sure why 13 had it so that AIed characters never used Phoenix Downs. But, one thing I really did like about 13 is that offensive magic isn't ass end game. Even if damage-wise it still loses to melee, it is very useful end game which is pretty rare for the Final Fantasy series as a whole.

FFXII actually gave you way more customization than XIII. The trick to XIII's system was that they simplified it and made the general options more, for lack of a better term, smart. I disliked that you couldn't actually customize as effectively in XIII.

The story was better than most FF games nowadays, but that's only if you enjoy the somewhat more complicated political plots that the writer of Vagrant's Story and the original Final Fantasy Tactics wrote. There's a reason the game took place in the same world as those games (Ivalice), after all. That said, in the last third of the game or so, the story lost a lot of its coherency due to the writer falling ill for an extended period of time and being removed from the writing team.

Also, the voice acting was amazing in that game. JP players were saying the English voices were better than the JP voices, and I'm inclined to agree. The game just wouldn't be the same without the stellar job the English voice cast did.

On the point of holding forward: Yeah, I think some people dislike being able to just set up the party for battle without having to actually do much in battle themselves. Not really much to be done there. I also don't use the "auto-battle" feature that's in a lot of turn-based games nowadays, either, though one of these days I'll probably be tired/lazy enough to do so. :>

Has anyone tried Atelier Totori? I'm thinking of picking that up because it looks absolutely gorgeous. Figure it would be a nice counterpoint to Dark Souls.

Have the game, but it's unopened. I need to try it out at some point~.

Maybe during winter break, if I'm not too busy playing Gundam and CSX.

I bought a Xbox360 just for ToV ...

And I spend like 300 hours on it.

Playing the PS3 version more or less at the moment, want to fight against Spiral Draco but the dungeon is so annoying.

Posted

My sister bought a 360 for Vesperia, too, ahaha.

I want Xillia. :(

Posted
tales of vesperia, anyone?

I, for one, was a vesperia master!

Lol. Tae has the PS3 version. We should get him to bring it and grind the secret dungeon. That place is hella cool.

You actually like that dungeon?

Man, I wish I could too. v: Everytime I see the map, I don't even want to play it.

The tales studios are really bad when it comes to making cool secret dungeons, imo. ToV, ToV PS3, TotA, ToS2, ToD®, ToP.. I hate them all lol.

That reminds me. A really bad RPG is Tales of Symphonia 2. The character designs were so good. Too bad the game itself isn't.

Oh yeah. I heard that was pretty much just meh. I liked the first game, so I'm pretty sad to hear that.

From what I experienced from actually going through what all of the game offers it's just a "fanfic" game. Maybe it'll help ease the pain knowing that at the same time ToS2 was being created, ToV was also being developed.

Tales of Symphonia was the gateway game, kind of sucks they actually made a sequel to that with such low production values. I sometimes wish that Namco was like Atlus, releasing near all their japanese niche games state-side. I mean, I wanted to play Tales of Vesperia F, Xillia looks pretty awesome, and I'm not sure about Graces but I still want to play it since it's a Tales game.

Probably the main reason I'll get a PSVita is the possibility of Tales ports that didn't make it stateside.

I just don't like the characters or story premise of Graces. It honestly looks kinda....bland.

Tales of Vesperia is amazing.

Xillia looks pretty sweet, I love Alvin and Millia.

Lord, the best RPG of ALL time is Grandia 1. Words cannot describe my love for that game. Everything is so perfect, the story, the cheesy but lovable voice acting, the animations, the characters and most of all the 'cutscenes'. The moment when you climbed over the wall and saw a whole new world sprawled out as far as your little pixel eyes could see took my breath away when I was a kid, my cousins and i squealed with joy when that happened. Beautiful, beautiful game. (Justin/Feena is teh hawtness. Gimme some of dem Icarian wings)

Plus I liked pretending I was Justin.

I actually finished that game. It is the main reason why I'm not looking forward to FFXIII-2. They both follow the same premise:

Use 2 new characters throughout the whole game with the occasional monster ally looking for the old party members of the previous (and infinitely better) game. Fanfic game does fit it pretty well since everything was pretty mediocre.

But who knows maybe XIII-2 will be the better game this time.

Have you played Atelier Rorona? The gameplay is almost the same, there are just a few changes.

If you haven't, it's just a.. boring "collect materials to create a cool item with alchemy" RPG without a good story, but with cute characters. v:

Nah really, all you do is collecting materials, beating monsters to farm more materials or doing some side quests where you.. have to collect/craft materials. You also have a deadline set and if you don't succeed in crafting a certain item during given deadline, you will get a game over. That schedule oriented gameplay makes the whole "searching and trying to create new items through different materials" thing a bit discouraging.

If you are a fan of collecting and crafting, the game could probably interest you. But if you look for a more traditional jRPG (which are more or less dead anyways), don't buy it.

Again, the game has Lolis! v:

I played one of the Atelier Iris games on PS2 and I just remembered about that whole deadline thing. I guess if it's more of the same just with better graphics and moe girls in frilly outfits then....

I'd probably enjoy it.

I also got a 360 for Vesperia and haven't used the system for anything since.

I played the game for a bit. Or rather I rented it. And the only thing that actually kept me going was the animation and whatnot. The battle system wasn't that good and like you said, it was just a bunch of collecting this and collecting that. There wasn't much exploration in that regard so it got boring fast. I think I managed to get through about two hours or so of the game. If they had a gallery with all the stills and animation art unlocked I wouldn't have bothered with much of the game lol.

Edit: Also while we're on the subject of Tales games. Anyone play Tales of Legendia, probably the worse mothership title in the series (tales of symphonia 2 doesn't count).

I played Tales of Legendia and I loved it. The main protagonist DID NOT USE A SWORD! That was reason enough for me to pick this up and I enjoyed it from start to finish.

You should try Suikoden II.

I'm sad most people think it's the worst mothership title. The story was, for a Tales game, very good.

Also: Go Shiina > Sakuraba. The soundtrack is soo delicious :kitty:

@kro_:

If we compare the Star Ocean series to the Atelier Series, Atelier Iris would be SO2 and Atelier Rorona/Totori would be SO4, according to Starlight's ranking, just saying.

No amount of OST will make me love or hate a game.

However, after playing Tales of Vesperia 9000 times over the last summer, I have come to the conclusion that the worst thing about it was it's soundtrack.

Sigh... The only Suikoden I can't get my hands on ;____;

WHY HASN'T IT BEEN RELEASED ON PSN YET :arg:

EDIT:

I hear from a lot of people that the story really is bland lol...

The only Suikoden I played was part three. It was interesting with the 108 characters and whatnot, though I feel I should have played earlier entries in the series to actually understand it. As far as Legendia goes, yeah, that's probably one of my least favorite games ever. I disliked much of it. The story, battle system, etc, oddly enough I finished it because it was a Tales game, so I had to ya know. Even the post-game shenanigans... man I'm devoted. Fortunately I still have the game and a PS2 so I can boot it up anytime I feel like remembering why I disliked it so much. I'm pretty sure it was the characters :(

@Lumin, I like the Vesperia OP a lot. I haven't played the game as much as you, I stopped after I messed something up somewhere and didn't feel like starting another playthrough to get it haha.

The Atelier series, I think, is either hit or miss. It would be actually good if they took the time to remedy the battle system. The stories are okay I guess, but that battle system, and usually a deadline and some way to limit exploration. Honestly, it'd do better if it were open-world with quick travel and things like that.
