You sure her name's not Meifang? I mean that's the same katakana spelling as Mei-Fang from Arcana Heart.

Maybe, I dunno. I hate katakana names. Those are hard to translate, so whatever is the best, use it.

So she's the head right now before Tsubaki joined right?

Yes, the girls are still students, but Jin and Taro have graduated.

Wait, Mai was in Zero Squad?

No, the leader wants Mai's "body" so she made some arrangements so Mai would be alone.

This makes it sound like Mai disappeared after graduating because the Zero Squadron was after her.

By the way, it looks like Kajun and Shiori joined Mai after leaving the academy. Which makes sense since it was never specified that they parted ways after graduating and it's better to reuse characters introduced in the previous manga instead of introducing and developing an entirely new set of characters for no reason:

@Kurushii, are you going to make a thread where you can post the links about raws? (providing this is naturally not breaking any rules. I'm missing for a long time lol)

So Variable Heart take place during the girls' last year in the Academy.

Mai's personality changed (teased Tsubaki about Jin). Sector Seven was mentioned and Mai seems to something about it (maybe she knows that Kajun is part of S7). Hibiki appearances (Mai knows him from the Mitsuki family). She seem slightly afraid of him. Makoto socks Kagura (looking forward in seeing that A LOT in this series). The leader of Zero Squadron is interested in Mai for some reason. Looking forward in seeing Mai's growth after two years in the next chapter. Mai VS Mei-Fang (gonna be a really interesting fight). I'm hoping that at the end of the fight she won't ask Mai to tutelage under Zero Squadron.

I'm still debating how I want to handle this release, and my past ones. The publisher for this has been very active lately, hunting down scans of their products.

Thank you very much for posting this chapter.

Is the following an accurate summary of what happens in the first chapter?

Spoiler

We see Jin's faceoff againt Tenjou. Then, in June of 2197 Mai, Makoto, Noel and Tsubaki go to the 2nd Hierarchical city in order to see Jin getting promoted and hailed as the hero of Ikagura. After they run into Kagura, who Makoto punches, they meet Hibiki, who Mai is wary of because she's aware that his is a family of assassins. Hibiki informs them of what's going on and they disperce. Mai then receives a message to go and meet Hibiki at a specific location, however that is a trap and she actually encounters Mei-Fang Lapis-Lazuli, who is the head of the Zero squadron and who informs Mai that she needs her body.

Comments regarding this chapter:

Spoiler

I found it interesting that Mai got cornered like this while she was still a student and before Noel had left the academy. In this discussion in Chronophantasma between Noel and Makoto, Makoto said that Mai disappeared after graduating, which implies that Mai finished the academy normally alongside Makoto and Tsubaki. I wonder if this incident will be resolved and then we will have a timeskip after Mai's graduation or if they have decided to retcon that comment by Makoto and they'll have Mai disappear while she's still a student. Interesting that Shiori and Kajun didn't appear in this chapter. I guess they wanted to focus on Makoto, Noel and Tsubaki a bit since it seems likely that they won't be appearing much in the rest of the manga.

It's interesting to compare what Mai looked like at the start of Remix Heart and the start of Variable Heart. She looks much more self-confident and at ease in the latter, which shows how much she matured over the course of her series:

I would certainly hope that they would retcon this comment since it was so recent. In fact that conversation's entire purpose was to bring Mai into the main games. There's no reason why this plot can't be resolved during her time at the Academy. It might involve them being away from the Military Academy for a while. Even more than that, the comment about graduating is that Noel and Makoto sounded so relaxed about Mai, that they hadn't had a chance to speak to her and she is rumored to have gone missing. If something happened to make her disappear before graduation, they would probably be more concerned (compare this to how Noel reacts to Carl). I really hope this isn't the last we see of Noel, Tsubaki and Makoto. We need at least some time with the complete Team Remix Heart and it's likely that this plotline involving Meifan Lapis-Lazuli and the Zero Squadron will be resolved while they are in Iwatsuchi. At the very least I need more interaction between Kagura and Makoto. We still need to learn how she came to work for him and be trusted enough to let her in on his connection to Sector Seven and there still is that issue of their supposed one-night stand (I'm not sure of the context for Makoto punching him here and whether that means they've already met). Considering Kajun works for Sector Seven, it is possible she will be the key to Makoto's connection, which is pretty important.

No pantsu shots or groping? Unbelievable.

Give it time my friend, give it time.

By the way, does anyone else find Meifan wanting Mai's "body" to be incredibly creepy? Like one of those intentionally unsettling suggestive lines that Terumi and Relius love to use.

Yeah, she doesn't seem to consider Mai as a person really. The reason why she goes to greet Mai personally is to confirm if Mai is the real deal. It probably has something to do with Mai being a remix heart, or something to do with the title of the series, Variable Heart.

And I don't think Mai will go missing now. Meifang seems like she wants to keep a low profile for now(telling her men not to do anything towards the daughter of Yayoi family due to not wanting to deal with them right now).
It's either going to be resolved, or put on hold until after graduation. Or maybe some moves will be made against Mai during her time left in school, but she is able to keep it a secret from the trio.

Yeah, that's true. I had assumed that the manga will cover the period of Mai's disappearance after her graduation, but this plotline could potentially be resolved without Mai leaving the academy early. I agree that Makoto would have been more concerned about Mai if she had disappeared early, but her comments indicate that Mai did not do so and did in fact graduate normally. Therefore this incident was either resolved, at least temporarily, or they have decided to retcon what Makoto had said.

The prominence that Mei-Fang has in the title page indicates that she will be a very important character in Variable Heart so my guess is that she is the main adversary. So I guess we have the following possibilities:

  1. This case is resolved now, Mai returns to school and her disappearance after graduation has nothing to do with Mei-Fang.
  2. Mei-Fang pulls back for a while and comes after Mai again after she graduates, tying her disappearance to this incident.
  3. Makoto's comment in Chronophantasma is retconned and Mai goes on the run at this point.

Regarding the other academy girls, as long as the manga takes place during their school years they can participate in the story freely. Though the fact that they are not present in the title page does indicate that they will not have a prominent role in this series.

Indeed, that could be intentional. She does appear to enjoy unsettling Mai.
