I honestly dont use the 4D/Volante loops(Though i really want to sometimes) and usually just got for guaranteed damage(2D Loopz/Sandwhich). It really is going to come down to checking your spacing and using moves that lead to the 4D/Volante stuff easier. All i can really say is keep messing around with it and try to find that sweet spot. Im sure someone else here could give you a better anwser though TBH . . . .

Do you have your (D)rive mapped to (X)? I play on Xbox and i couldnt really do any of carls loops til i mapped (D) to (RB). If you already have (D) moved then its just gonna be all about spacing and timing. Try getting the volante and 4D off before *insert combo starter* and hopfully it all connects.
