For me, it started with GGX which definitely had some effects on me. First played it on Dreamcast at a friend's house. "Holy crap", I though to myself, "what is this magical fighting game with char designs so different, visuals that popped at me so, and music that was just f'n bad ass?" I didn't have a Dreamcast of my own at the time but I did have a modded PSX. So I found Guilty Gear for it and just played that for awhile when I wasn't at my friend's. I got a JPN region PS2 as a xmas gift one year (supposedly it was modded... it wasn't :P ) and had 2 games I could play on it. DOA 2:Hardcore and MGS2: Sons of Liberty... to my credit a) they were in English and b) I played the crap out of them. Shortly thereafter, I discovered playasia (nuff said) and that it was modded to play different region dvds (not games.) I still have my ps2 with its small library of games (3rd strike, first 2 Naruto games, Tekken 5, GGXX #R/AC/AC#R append (definitely do not miss disc swapping anymore thx to inevitable psn/xbla update.)
I didn't know a lot of people that played GG at the time and of arcades that had machines which were within a reasonable distance of me so all my GG play was via pad (sadly I'm still transitioning to stick when I fire up GG nowadays, BB has helped me a bit but it's a steep climb.) Obviously, that kept my guilty gear circle of friends small but it didn't make our matches thru the years less entertaining (XX#R Johnny <3.) And if given a chance to go back and do it all over again... in a f'n heartbeat.
