[Xrd] News & (Theoretical) Gameplay Discussion
White Man replied to Shinjin's topic in Guilty Gear General
Ah, okay then. I think Order-Sol is one of the coolest characters in GG from a design perspective, but I'm (pleasantly) surprised to see so many other players caring about anything that isn't directly related to the gameplay, specifically their main(s). -

Everybody seems to want Order-Sol, yet I hardly ever see anyone play as him. He's one of maybe five characters I've never once fought online, and he doesn't show up all that frequently in AC/+R tournament footage based on what I've seen. Is OS like a super popular second main or something...? -
What's the worst fighting game you've played?

I thought the gameplay in Divekick was at least temporarily amusing (I only played it for a short while), but yeah, all the fanbase-pandering references are pretty obnoxious. It's like somebody took a bunch of unfunny memes from the FG community and gave them to the writers for Family Guy to ensure there was zero subtly left in the final product. -

The world just got a little less classy. Rest in peace, Kayumi. EDIT: Oh wow, I just learned that guy's birthday was Halloween. Damn, he was born to play Slayer. -

In this scene, Axl is amazed by the uncanny likeness of I-No's Moon Over June face. -
Whoa, the gameplay got fast. Like really fast. I thought the first video was playing at the wrong speed at first.

You're right about that. I'm just saying that if someone declares himself a fan of a game and then unceremoniously -- almost spitefully -- abandons that game because of the absence of one character, I have to wonder if they were ever really a true Scotsman fan and not just an opportunist who stuck with it because they had an easy time dominated with a certain character. Wasn't there a kinda-well-known Slayer player who completely quit GG after Slayer lost his bite loop? I recall hearing that. I don't know if that's accurate, but if so, that's the kind of attitude I'm talking about. -
Cool! I think I slightly prefer the original arcade opening, but that was at least way better than the console opening. I'm surprised they never updated the logo. You can see at 0:30 that CHRONOPHANTASMA II is the new game's official subtitle, but the title logo is the exact same as the one they used for the original release.

Don't tell me how to, how to fuckin' live my life bro. YOU'RE NOT MY REAL DAD! There's noting wrong with people crossing their fingers for their mains in a new game, but I frankly don't understand this mentality of refusing to play a game unless specific characters make the roster. It's a sequel, man. Some things are going to be different from the game you're playing now. Complete parity in the cast is an unreasonable expectation for what is technically the first installment in a brand new series. If you're not even willing to learn a new character (or learn new tricks for a character whose moveset has changed significantly between installments), then you were never really a fan of Guilty Gear; you were a fan of the one specific play style you'd put the effort into training. Oh well, I guess it's still better than people who drop games because their main fell slightly in the tier lists between revisions. I have zero respect for players like that. -
King of Fighters 98 UM & 2002 UM: Steam Edition
White Man replied to Vulcan422's topic in Misc Fighter Central
Yeah, pick just about any title in the KOF series and there's a decent chance at least half the cast will have 60%+ damage combos with full meter. That said, I'm actually not convinced Vanessa is the worst character in 2002:UM. I wouldn't call myself an expert at the game, but making her a 0 point character when Whip and Angel are worth 1 seems a little strange to me. -

Nameless doesn't even scare me as much as some other characters who aren't as high in the tier lists. Benimaru will get in your face and just stay there for the entire match no matter what you do. And if King manages to get you in the corner, man, you are done. No discussion, your ass is getting KO'd. -

Watching some low-quality footage of Xrd today, I realized that, when the visuals are sufficiently blurred, the models are virtually indistinguishable from the old XX sprites. The characters' proportions, colors, the way they move... Everything is just right. Totally random observation, I know. It's just something I noticed that made me happy. -
A for effort, A+ for comedy.

I was pretty dismissive of Miguel when Tekken 6 first came out, but he really grew on me. While his design couldn't compete with the sheer gaudiness of characters like A and Lars, he had a subtle charisma I found appealing. Dude had some awesome moves as well. (If you want to talk about forgettable characters from T6, I refer you to Zafina — or, as most people call her, What's-Her-Face.) Tekken was never meant to be about lengthy combos, though. The engine in earlier games favored smart movement and fundamentals with an emphasis on short, damaging combos that rewarded you for punishing your opponents' mistakes. The bound system came into being because the devs wanted players to be able to do these long, super-flashy combos that would look hype in gameplay trailers. But as you pointed out, it had the opposite effect in practice, largely reducing the gameplay to two people dancing around waiting for an opening, then going in with a wall-carry combo they could mash out from muscle memory. Rinse and repeat. They look incredibly unnatural as well, with weird stuff like mid-level jabs launching characters up off the ground and attacks not properly connecting between the characters' models. I don't expect (or want) my fighting games to have strictly realistic physics, but I don't like every match looking like the engine is being glitched out either.

She uses Savate, huh? http://youtu.be/IXNs9ARsNFU?t=56s Giving her high heels was totally a good idea.

While I agree with the first part of your post 100%, blaming the fans for what Capcom pulled with Darkstalkers isn't fair. Using stripped-down ports of two games over a decade old to judge interest in a franchise was a terrible idea. Even so, Resurrection sold enough copies to appear to multiple best-seller lists after its release (despite the fact that a netplay-enabled DS3 was already commercially available on PSN). Unfortunately, Capcom had this ludicrous notion that the game would break all these digital sales records and let half their CEOs retire early. When the game only sold very well instead of impossibly well, the higher-ups called it a dismal failure and put the kibosh on anything Darkstalkers-related out of spite. Fans do have trouble putting their money where their mouths are a lot of the time, but the death of Darkstalkers is entirely Capcom's fault.

GG is one of the better console-exclusive fighters in the PS1 library. It's broken as hell, but it's a competently-made game with really solid production values. And unlike most of the games mentioned in this thread, you can definitely have fun playing GG if you go in with the right mindset. -

FECK. Oh well, I've spent this much time watching other people play the game... -

I don't know man, I think I had more fun messing around with that than the last crossover fighter I played with the word "Brawl" in the title. -

I'm still not in love with Elphelt's design, but I'm glad they made her personality humorously dorky instead of either deadpan or all super shy (anime has taught me to expect one of the two from this type of character). And as expected, her playstyle looks like a ton of fun. The new stage look gorgeous as well. -
Yes and no. I haven't encountered any random players online on the 360 version in months, but roughly a quarter of the people on my friends list are always up for a game if I ask them. There's definitely some good competition to be had on both platforms, you'll just probably have to set something up in advance. Maybe try joining the GG Skype chat?

New Smash Bros for Wii U and 3ds
White Man replied to Kyosuke Kagami's topic in Misc Fighter Central
The Super Mario World cartoon attached to it was the business, though. -
I thought about picking this up when it first came out, but a couple of people told me it was a shoddy port. Between that and not being a JoJo fan (got nothing against the series, I just never got into it) the game didn't seem like it was worth the $20 Capcom wanted for it. Oh well, there's always All-Star Battle.
