Ghost Dog Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 I'm having a brutal time against my friend's Taokaka. He just drills into me and outspeeds me in getting her combos off. As of now I try to keep Neesan between us as a human shield and poke from behind her but I feel like there are better options. Suggestions?
Zeero Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 Taokaka is REALLY hard to play against with Carl. My friend plays a really good taokaka and I can't do anything about it. Some disorganized thoughts on why taokaka owns carl so much: Keeping Nirvana between you doesn't normally do anything because: 1. if she does 6D and hold 6, she hits Nirvana (cancelling her move) then bounce over her right into your face. 2. if she does 6D and presses B, it hits nirvana (cancelling her move) then go through her, and also hits you since nirvana doesn't take hits. 3. her 5C/jC is like litchi's 6B/jB, and it zones the hell out of nirvana. Doing robot punch super doesn't do anything either if you're trying to do a block string into a mixup game because her counter assault is her 2D and she flies into the sky. Catching her in an air game is hard because her jC/jD beats you. Any opening in your pressure game = run away because she jumps and Ds away. her 5B rapes you so hard. If a taokaka does nothing but 5B 66 5B 66 5B at you, the timing is REALLY strict to punish it (IB necessary). Not to mention if you guess wrong and they throw a 5B 5C at you, you get CHed. Back dashing results in another blocked 5B or you get hit in the air. Vivace A gets punished. Poking is also hard because she out range/speed/priority you I have a hard time with this matchup as well, but theres a few hard openings you can look for. If she is close enough and does mash claw A on the ground, you can IB the first hit and punish with 5A. ie: taokaka does 5B 5C 236AAAAAA IB the first 236A, punish with 5A 2B 3C->throw loop If she is not close enough, you can also Vivace A after the 5C. Her 236A doesn't have tracking so she'll be mashing in the air while you're behind her. 3C beats her 5C, but only if timed REALLY well. Not worth the risk of eating a 5C->6C->combo If she is above your head, 6A actually beats her jC. But not if she is far away. Vivace B out of the corner if she jumps! really important since u'll be blocking a lot in this match.
PhaethonH Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 My basic approach against Taokaka: Use empty 8Ds to deny her air entry. Typically with [D] 5A[8] ]D[ 5 (clap during 5A), to keep me on the ground. Sometimes with 5C, for ground poke combined with anti-air. Tao can combo into air while hitting Nirvana, but with the robot acting as a meat(?) shield, Taokaka's trajectory is more predictable afterward (you're not in hit stun, Tao is in recovery/active frames). This technique is difficult to exploit fully, but can lead into unbreakable air throw setups if your Tao is going flowchart-mode (i.e. predictable) -- to wit, air-throwing her out of air Drive. 9 j.214C backed up with a 623D on recovery (Allegretto + nail spikes) is also massive air-denial. Barrier Guard against ground strings, Instant Barrier if possible. Done right, you're out of range of her next attack, but in range for a 5C counter hit (= stagger!). This one is really tough to do, but the payoff enormous. Taking advantage of Burst -> Clap Loop serendipity (i.e. if I just happen to have a nice Burst-Clap setup). Delay 6]D[ on Sandwich Loop. This timing mixup helps throw off Instant Guard escape attempts (either hits after the Instant Guard timing, or hits them between Instant Guard attempts (i.e. while not blocking)). That's all I can think of for now.
Kyle Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 There's spacing where I'm typically comfortable using 5B & 5C as poking tools while playing Carl. This is very ineffective during the Tao match-up b/c her 5C will destroy you for huge CounterHits. This alone cost me a tourney match against Mac(arthur Blunts). Strangely enough, I do find this match fun. At least you can catch her with the occasional 8]D[... unlike kune.
4Corners Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 A bot. In a Carl thread. Anyone else think that's funny?
Zoogstin Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 I think he wants to give Nirvana jewlery and bread. =/
4Corners Posted August 22, 2009 Posted August 22, 2009 Awww... That'd be sweet if it weren't a little creepy. I think?
Kyle Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 Opening move jump back and guard. If Tao did 66, 5C you are safe. If Tao did a horizontal drive, you've just punished her Blanka style for a massive combo. The Wheel of Fate Is Turning Rebel 1 Action [7], J.C, 2A, 2B, 3C, 22]D[, Iad, j.2C, Alle~can, 2C, 8]D[...Rape
Zoogstin Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 Hmm and all this time I just stabbed them with 5C for the CH. lol.
Kyle Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 Hmm and all this time I just stabbed them with 5C for the CH. lol. o.0 was that sarcasm or a different perspective. Seriously, 9/10 Tao I've played open with running 5C and I have yet to find in offensive answer.
Zoogstin Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 Oh my bad, I got fixed on horizontal drive punish. Carl's 5C as you may know will stuff it. But yeah I loose to Tao's run 5C as well. I don't 5C every time just because of that.
Shiawase Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 You guys probably know that this is possible but I thought it was funny. I fought against a Tao player and she used the Pounce DD (I don't remember what it's called)then I used Nirvana's command grab. When Tao jumped toward me Nirvana caught her and cancelled the DD and KO'd her.
4Corners Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 Buffer it off a 2a. Then you duck AND do the command grab. Only problem is you lose infinite offa punish if you miss, cuz Nirvana is running somewhere in the background like a retard.

Prophet Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Any advice on catching Tao? In CT I would throw 8Ds out to try and mess up her approach but now its rather easy for her to stuff them. So far my Tao matches have consisted of me chasing her around for half a round with neither of us landing any big damage, and then I get stuck in a taunt loop. I feel even less comfortable waiting for her to come to me as I can't handle Tao's pressure.
ioKain Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 I was playing a really good Tao last night and the few times I did managed to get him sandwiched he would CA out if he had the meter. In this vid it looks like 8D might be a solution to this @ 2:25. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQ7kPuKOkcg#t=2m24s Not sure if this is common knowledge, as I am brand new to Carl. Wish I had known this last night, I might have been able to win a round.
Zeero Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 that looked more like the taokaka A cancelling the CA instead of the 8D hitting her really...
