render Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 To each their own. I don't think anyone's going to hold it against you if you don't like the way he plays. I used to be really conservative with my coins (the way Omito is) and hated watching DC toss away all that damage potential just to be unique or flashy. But then the rest of the players in my area kept asking why I kept all my change when the coin is so good... and seeing DC play well even -without- coins, I kind of changed my play style. Whenever I see a Johnny match-vid, I root for the Johnny no matter WHO's playing him. Every time I see a Johnny lose, a piece of my soul dies.
qwerty Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 Every time I see a Johnny lose, a piece of my soul dies. don't watch johnny matches in ac then . try watching some old ggx matches. you'll see some of the most ridiculous shit ever in those (spending all coins on mist trap and ending it in a super, among other things) and the best part is that johnny always wins.
Camo Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 try watching some old ggx matches. you'll see some of the most ridiculous shit ever in those (spending all coins on mist trap and ending it in a super, among other things) and the best part is that johnny always wins. I do like you ahah Prefer watch some fuckin' Reload Match when Johnny wasn't a simple waste. In AC their are not many match where Johnny win. Jonio seems to be the player who understand the best Johnny' in the AC Version seeing is game on match.
A3Religion Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 Bleed: is the standard of what it is to be a Johnny player. What I acquired from him was that Johnny can make a combo or a set up from nearly any random hit. DC: The Coin Spam King love watching him fight so much, and I really think he is probably one of the smartest Johnny players out there. I think I acquired the most dramatic change in my style watching him, because he taught me to concentrate on being effective without the coins, and taught me how good coin locks people down which I think is the biggest reason why Johnny players are so ineffective (besides all his other "disadvantages"). Also a dramatic incident when I was getting Pwned by Andrew from FL after losing all my coins and he kept saying "a coinless Johnny is worthless". Watching DC helped me to learn those things. Being too reserved will kill you, but if you learn how to play without it, it will make you all the better IMO. Omito: is the shit. Execution flawless which is so important for Johnny's combo. Suzume: has spectacular execution with a crazy lockdown, Mist Cancel King. I learned the importance of MCing from him. MK: got a lot better but he is real sometime-ish. He uses a lot of Jackhounds though. Ying: Real fast, he is probably the fastest Johnny player I have ever seen, and heavy in using DBs. Hiro: is hot shit, he is really flashy but he is effective which is hard to pull off. Jonio: I really like him for real. He uses Johnny like he is supposed to in AC. Love how he disrespected that Eddie though in that video. MSY: God of Johnny!! I haven't seen him fight since Reloaded but he never lost. Also his CVs shows he hasn't lost his touch though it might be unfair to give him that title seeing as how long ago he hasn't played in tournaments.
Kadius Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 I think A3 pretty much nailed it with his descriptions. Though, I must say that I really can't stand watching DC play anymore. The coin is awesome, but I think you should at least hold on to one or two until your opponent is at 30% health. He also doesn't seem to place his coins with much thought. Also, bonus: Watch any video of DC vs RF on youtube and you can see RF disrespect the shit out of him. On Omito: He's a great player with awesome combos/resets, but it seems like he chokes when going up against certain players (N.O, for example). One of my favorite players, for sure. Suzume: The smart version of DC. Locks down with minimal coin usage. Places his coins wisely and in holes where locked down opponents think there's an opening... only to end up hanging themselves. SICK MC combos and probably my #1 favorite competitive JO player. Hiro seems to be the newest JO around AFAIK. I've been pretty impressed by him so far. Also has the best player name, since it ties in with one of JO's win quotes. ------- Why has no one mentioned Wise(Waizu)? He's pretty damn fun to watch and has a very... aerial/fast paced play style.
Killerwatt Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 This is great guys; thanks so much for playing along lol. I pretty much agree with everyone's thoughts; BLEED is the standard that all JOs should learn from, DC shows us that coinless JO is certainly not worthless, Omito, Hiro and Suzume are amazing... Now, how about us Western JOs? The only ones I have seen vids of are 4r5, A3 and kenmastersx. I know we're not given much respect in the west as JO players but I think we have great talent here. Hopefully we'll start seeing more vids of US JOs; I plan on finding a way for me to record my casuals very soon.
qwerty Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 i've seen kenmastersx sbo qualifier video on youtube. it's actually one of the first results if you just type accent core into the search bar. other than that, i recall hearing that there's a really good jo main in socal, though i forget his name at the moment. there's a few jo's in norcal (myself included) but most of us are just about as good as any other random scrub (though i mostly speak for myself). i tend to win lots of rounds but lose lots of matches, mostly due to stupid mistakes i make under pressure (such as iading during mc pressure strings against potemkin), though i can only get better i guess.
Jo Posted September 13, 2008 Posted September 13, 2008 other than that, i recall hearing that there's a really good jo main in socal, though i forget his name at the moment. render! I have a few AC videos of me. Well actually, it's just one or two. Copied from TGS's Summer Casuals post in the Guilty Pleasures forums. June 28 Casuals (Part 1): http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1333814372786769740&hl=en Warning: 1 hour long! Matches in order of appearance w/timestamps: 1:47 - Jo (JO) vs. SirPhobos (JA) 5:00 - Jo (JO) vs. Mike Z (PO) I lose to Mike Z. Then there's this other one that was a casual tourney at pulsr's. It's WC casual madness 2. Click on the right under "More from user" to get to it. 18:10 me vs MCR (VE) 41:18 Hellmonkey (BA) vs me 59:00 pulsr (TE) vs me and 1:05:10 me vs shtkn (KY) That's if you can stand the wait for the second vid, haha.

If you find a way, you should come to Chaz's house and record some matches with everyone. If not I'll still find a way to show some more fights of fighting different people soon enough.

Next time Chaz is having a meeting please let me know; PM me through here as I check it religiously daily. Back to topic: Jo, those were some great matches. Pity about PO though; Potemkin Buster FTL Do you play stick only or was that some Pad awesomeness?
Jo Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 Haha, Mike Z is awesome. I do play stick, but I used to be a pad warrior back in my earlier days. I could play practically the same me thinks. Man, I really wish some of my matches at EVO were recorded. Especially teams! I had some really epic matches. My greatest performance to date!
render Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 http://page.freett.com/abcrankingbattle/movie.htm 2nd link from the bottom, CPO (PO) vs Kid (JO). 00:07. WTF. Is Johnny considered off the ground during the 2nd half of his 2D???????????????????????? Can someone confirm this on the console version?
4r5 Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 I don't think Johnny is airborne or anything, but I also don't think Pote's Slidehead simply hits you if you're grounded. I think Slidehead just sends a pixel high attack box across the entire ground. Which is how stuff like Eddie's 5D evades Slidehead, but you can still ground-throw Eddie out of it. ABA and Sol's runs will also randomly evade Slidehead. Pretty sure all these wacky Slidehead evasion is just a result of sloppy hitbox's not going all the way to the ground during a single frame or two
Kadius Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 http://page.freett.com/abcrankingbattle/movie.htm 2nd link from the bottom, CPO (PO) vs Kid (JO). 00:07. WTF. Is Johnny considered off the ground during the 2nd half of his 2D???????????????????????? Can someone confirm this on the console version?Just tested this in the US AC release. Johnny's 2D is immune to slidehead very late in the recovery frames (as he is rising from 2D). It's a very small window, 2-3 frames, even. Not very useful, IMO. Edit: Also, Potemkin is cheap. ):
render Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 BAH! Just a freak occurrence, then. Thanks for the explanation 4r5, and for testing it out Kadius. And yeah, I know. 2nd round of that vid is fail.
Killerwatt Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 Guys we really gotta find a way for JO to get out of the Giganter trap. Can't we do something like SB it on wakeup? I know I'm grasping at straws here but every PO I play does this, and it's very humiliating to endure...
Rollie the Guar Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 Unfortunately, you can't slash back for the first 10 frames after wakeup.
render Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 First off, you can't SB on wake-up. Period. You need to Standing Instant Block the shield thingy and then backdash. MAKE SURE YOU STAND-BLOCK. Block-stun is longer when you crouch-block. If it's timed poorly, then you can usually just hold up+back and you'll jump out of there. My suggestion would be to just give that a shot a few times, and if you find that it doesn't work, then you're playing a Pot player with decent timing for the loop. If they start timing slidehead to catch you just as you wake up, then you need to get the timing down for reversal backdash.
Kadius Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 I'm with Render on this one. I have never understood why so many players sit and do nothing while getting giganter looped. Instant block, backdash, whatever, just do something. Alternatively, you can find some way to force Pot to use up all of his tension. IIRC, he has to have ~25% to even start a loop from a slidehead.
Chomite Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 ...god's sake, try to DAA the shield too. reversal backdash...learn that shit.
Jellyfish Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 Hi all, I have another question from the same video. On 00:33, Johnny RCd his Ensenga and do an airdash. At which point should I press the 3 buttons? I cannot get the timing right. Thanks.
Jellyfish Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 When Ensenga connects. ....... I forgot that a move must connect before it can be RCd It must be due to all those hours practising FRCs Thanks!
Jo Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Guys we really gotta find a way for JO to get out of the Giganter trap. Can't we do something like SB it on wakeup? I know I'm grasping at straws here but every PO I play does this, and it's very humiliating to endure... Damn, I didn't know Johnny recovered faster in his standing guard than his crouching one. render too smart. If you have the tension, you can time it so that you can overdrive through slidehead. You won't hit PO, but at least you'll have enough invincibility to avoid getting knocked down again.
4r5 Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 You suffer more hitstun when you get hit while crouching, but I don't think it's like that with blocking.
