Nice to see that the palette swapping works in GIMP, Photoshop, and Paintshop Pro. The problem is that GIMP hates me, Photoshop costs money I don't have (I REFUSE TO PIRATE), and anything with "Pro" in it is probably going to cost money. I use Paint.NET and I was wondering if anyone has found a plug-in that is capable of using the .ACT files properly for palette swaps.

SHOCKING UPDATE: Err, holy crap. For the first time in the 3 months I've had GIMP, it actually booted successfully for me. This question about Paint.NET plugins is now a small priority for me since GIMP is working for once, but if it were to be answered, that would be appreciated as well.

and this is the first product of my efforts in GIMP. I personally admire it a bit since 2 of my RL friends are Jin players and I'm probably going to hear this a lot in almost all of my matches until I get my PS3 fixed so I can start playing online again.

GIMP hates everyone. The reason it's free? It's powered by your tears of frustration as you vainly attempt to work out how the fuck to use it, and even if you do that, it persists in glitching up or freezing or RAAAAAAAAAAARGH

...But very nice job. It looks great to me.

This is true, it does hate everyone. Thanks for the feedback too by the way. I just got finished animating the second half of this particular move because this specific frame of the move struck me as cute, awesome, and deadly looking all at the same time.

This is the result

This is the result recolored to my beloved 3rd CS palette just seconds later.

Omg I love GIMP now... :v:

Is there a full picture of this? http://a.imageshack.us/img819/1329/1278226997656.png

Her face is in the 'Dialogue Portraits', but I can't find her anywhere in the 'Full Portraits' folder. I've check a bunch of other folders to be sure, but I still can't find it.

Could somebody please explain me how do I add .act files in gimp so that they work?

I found out how to do it with GIMP. You gotta import the palette file. Open the Palettes dialog

Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Palettes

Then on the palettes dialog open the context menu and select "Import Palette".

Check "Palette file" as source then select your palette file, then just click import.

Now if you haven't already, open the sprite image file you want. Then

Colors > Map > Set Colormap

Then just choose the palette that you just imported.

Lol that's all there really is to it. This was on the first page. :\

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone could share some tips on sprite editing.

I'm trying to animate them but they turn out jumpy, even when I line-up what I thought were reference points.

Is there a trick to getting them aligned properly or does it just take a lot of patience and a good eye?

Spent an hour banging my head against my monitor earlier trying to figure it out but I just can't do it, and Google is zero help. I figured somebody here ought to know.

Some questions.

What sprites are you animating?

What are you using as a reference point?

Have you resized the sprites?

What program are you using?

First tried to edit Tsubaki's idle standing animation, then tried Lambda's idle standing animation.

For Tsubaki I was using that thing that appears to be a piece of her hat at the top right. For Lambda, the little yellow dot to the left of her. I made sure everything was lined up pixel perfect.

I didn't resize the sprites, but I did copy-paste them to a uniformly sized canvas (seeing as they were all different resolutions, for some reason).

I tried first with Photoshop CS4 and then downloaded GIMP after I gave up on thatm but GIMP confused the fuck out of me and I didn't even make an effort to start editing in it.

For standing animations, use the feet to line them up. Ideally, the back foot. Lining up by the head, or anything above the waist, will screw you up badly.

First off, a big thank you to Circuitous for all his work!

Here's my first attempt at coloring and animating several characters as well (Litchi using Millia's color palette, Noel using Baiken's color palette, Tsubaki using Axl Low's color palette, Mu-12 using Dizzy's color palette and Taokaka using May's color palette):
