Greed Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 I heard that Shymalan has cast himself in an Unbreakable sequel as the villain. I'm not sure if he has reached the nadir of self-delusion, or the pinnacle of hubris. hahahahaha speaking of M.Night
Superking™ Posted February 3, 2011 Author Posted February 3, 2011 I heard that Shymalan has cast himself in an Unbreakable sequel as the villain. I'm not sure if he has reached the nadir of self-delusion, or the pinnacle of hubris. The Unbreakable sequel got retooled to be part of the Devil trilogy (the first movie being that stupid one about the elevator released some time ago).
Greed Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 You mean the one that was FIVE PEOPLE TRAPPED IN AN ELEVATOR, ONE'S THE DEVIL. Everyone who's watching the movie: Oh its obviously the old lady. -old lady dies early on- 30-40 mins of time wasting later SURPRISE IT'S THE OLD LADY Dude's more predictable than a small child with a full bladder in a swimming pool

sweetvids Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Question for ye who are medically/training inclined (so Peter and Long): Short version: - is there a fast way to determine your literal physical breaking point without actually breaking anything? - what is the optimal way to increase the threshold on that without actually breaking anything? Long version: I have a simple problem when it comes to physical training. I have the will to do it, I can control my diet, and I don't mind sucking at it to begin with. The problem is that I am quite literally brittle. Last term I got a stress fracture in my left foot, and it basically nixed me for two months. This term, I got a soft tissue injury in my root foot, and an x-ray on it revealed that a few weeks earlier, I had already gotten a minor stress fracture in my right foot as well! I'm not exactly going Van Damme and trying to kick down trees; all I've been doing is jogging (1 mile), sprints (total distance of 1 mile), and a few sets of jumps/crunches/etc. No lifting of heavy weights, no jumping off 20ft ladders, or anything crazy like that. So aside from becoming Samuel L Jackson in UNBREAKABLE, what can I do? Alright Gabe, Long Version: Like I've mentioned it has to do with genetics first of all. It's quite possible that your family is more susceptible to injury or have weaker bones. So you might want to look at other members in your family and their injuries. Second has to do with your upbringing. If you grew up running and playing sports a lot, during the critical periods of growth, your body is more likely to be better equipped and prepared to handle the stresses put on it. If you however grew up sitting around, not doing very vigorous exercise, then you may be more inclined to injury when you do engage in physical activity. Furthermore, diet and exercise play an important role especially in bone development since ossification or osteogenesis occurs until you're about 22 years old in most cases. This means that once you hit that age you can't build up anymore bone. Why this is important is because afterwards you can only maintain, and it becomes more difficult as you become older or engage in vigorous activity. So it's important to stress building up a strong base during the ossification period when you're young. That's why now there's so many commercials promoting people to drink milk and eat diary products. How this relates to you is that it's quite possible that you didn't do as much physical activity as a kid and didn't "maximize" the osteogenesis, so now your bones aren't quite as strong as some of your compatriots who have done physical activity all their lives. Moreover, if you look at the activity you're doing now, sure you're not lifting heavy weights, but you're constantly putting strain on your joints and your bones. Running and jumping put huge stress impact on your bones and your joints such as running, every step you take you're putting about 2x your body weight in stress on your legs. This is compounded even more if you have improper running shoes and running form. So although it may not seem like much, overtime your body is going to deteriorate and suffer the consequences of this punishment. Alright gotta go to class again. I will come back with part 2 on what you can do to build up resistance to being a pussy.

sweetvids Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Gabe what are your exercise patterns like now? And what is your history of physical activity as well as injury dating back to when you were oh let's say 16?
ghostgoodboy Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 also ray I played around with the helmet cam and it's super easy to use. my laptop has a micro sd slot too which makes it easy to transfer the videos. are you coming up with us on saturday? HELMET CAM TEST RUN. yeah just need to remember what icons represent what different modes, NEED THAT SLOW MOTION on stunts, and I found out it recharges battery when connected to a USB port. You probably need to use the sticker mount though, the elastic wrap thing will definitely send the camera on a trajectory into some no-snowboarding zone. Got nothing other than a pair of gloves, so need JU your clothes too. let's maybe pick up some A&W for breakfast on Sat as I got COUUUUPOONNS.
BagLunch Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Gabe what are your exercise patterns like now? And what is your history of physical activity as well as injury dating back to when you were oh let's say 16? Exercise pattern is 0 for the past few weeks due to various illness. Never broken any bones or had any significant injury beyond bumps/scrapes prior to this school year. Well, I have jammed every finger and both thumbs on both hands at various points playing basketball in elementary school, but that's it. I have twisted my ankles before, but I've never had any of those super-nasty joint dislocations or swell-o-rama sprains. I started getting more sedentary towards the end of high school because PE was no longer required, and I'd say in undergraduate I was in consistently the worst shape of my life because I didn't have any motivation to do much of anything. That probably contributes to a lack of injuries, though.
rtl42 Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 i was reading the link that Dace posted up, and i saw this in the sidebar: 6 Animals That Just Don't Give a F#@k Of course, the material is interesting, but the writing is pretty good, too. Would read again.

BagLunch Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 thesis defense finished this morning! MISSION COMPRETE
BagLunch Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 (edited) To get back on topic of SHYAMALAN, the most interesting quote was recently gotten from the writer of the DS game 999. He basically said that he comes up with the twist BEFORE he writes the story. Now it somewhat makes sense in that he's probably got some super clever idea/point to make, and he really wants to build the plot around that. Still, you can't help but laugh at the thought of it. Cart before the horse! EDIT: GRAMMAR TIME Edited February 4, 2011 by BagLunch
Saru Kada Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 MISSION COMPRETEyay he didn't get FISSION MAILED congrats stefan! I'd always imagined that that was how you had to write stories like that. as the focus of the story is that one defining revelatory plot twist, you'd end up using the rest of the story to build up to and further accentuate that single moment - I mean, I imagine writing the sixth sense would have been rather silly if you weren't already working off the assumption that bruce willis is already dead. "crap guys, we gotta re-edit the entire script so that nobody actually talks to him. shit." sure, it may seem like he's jumping the gun, but given the way all of his movies are structured, it seems like a necessity. ray: YEEEAH WE JUST GOT OURSELVES A REAL MATCH. wu is confirmed for saturday as well. as for the helmet cam, the helmet has a latch to hold on to the goggles to ensure the goggles don't fly off in case of failure, it should be able to do the same for the helmet cam. will, can you do saturday morning for snowboarding?
Superking™ Posted February 4, 2011 Author Posted February 4, 2011 Ray, I need to borrow your stick for Vancouver Street Battle tomorrow.

Actually, now that I've gotten the complete quote, it makes more sense. What I had read was: "So the "twist" comes first, basically." Which is actually prefaced by: "I first start by creating a rough draft of the characters' personalities. Then I make a sort of rough draft of the setting. Next, I figure out the "twist" for the story, and work toward that by coming up with a plot that fits that particular twist perfectly." Because "twist" in a vacuum is kind of odd.
