Chumaralupa Posted May 25, 2015 Author Posted May 25, 2015 Dengeki update, because I'm not going to be surprised at anything at this point. http://www.siliconera.com/2015/05/25/new-dengeki-bunko-fighting-climax-game-planned-for-this-summer/
Bearell Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 Double post, but I wanted to let everyone know that I will be setting up the next set of Anime Monthlies/Ranbats to help people prepare for EVO. The dates I have planned are June 13, June 27, and July 11, making these bi-weekly. As it currently stands, our long time archenemy "The Board Game Group" has room 206/207 reserved on the 13th and 11th for their world domination meetings. But according to UAT Jimmy they've been a no show for some time. So while 201 is what we have reserved, there may be a chance we can take 206/207 for the first and last ranbat (we will definitely be in 201 for the second ranbat). We will also have the streaming equipment again to record matches. I'm planning on keeping everything the same as it was before, with the games being Persona, Uniel, and Xrd and their timeframes as they were previously. However, I feel that with how Persona performed during the last few monthlies, it has become an issue that needs to be addressed. I'm not gonna do some speech about "saving" Persona, I can't force people to play a game they don't enjoy. But if I can count the number of people that actually play the game on one hand (Ryan, Luke, Erik, Nion, and myself) then I feel like it might not be worth having a tourney for it despite it being a main event game at EVO. I want to hear what others think of dropping Persona from the lineup and possibly changing the timeframes around for the other games. I know some people are unable to make it until later in the day and thus need certain games to be at a certain time. I do feel bad about suggesting this for the Persona players, but honestly there might be more experience to be had from casuals than a tourney where I have to convince 3 other people to join, or worse we make it round robin (blaz died shortly after we tried that method). So let me know what you guys think as well as your schedules. I want to accommodate for as many people as I can. Once we have everything figured out I'll post all the finalized decisions by the end of the week.
LegendaryRath Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 I've already talked with Kevin a little bit about all of this. Help him out any way you guys can because running all of this will be a ton of work and it's not fair to have all of it rest on his shoulders. I'll do what I can to help with these events, although I might not attend all three of them. I chose to stick with monthly tournaments before because I knew I would get burnt out trying to do bi-weekly, but I think Kevin can pull it off so long as he gets some help (and dropping persona as a tournament would help a ton as well). These types of events are a ton of work. Making arrangements to get a space to use, communicating with everyone attending, transporting dozens of pieces of equipment, setting all of it up, rearranging the space to not be a fire hazard, figuring out who's playing which games, setting up brackets, fixing brackets because something probably went wrong the first time, updating brackets throughout the tournament, running around setting up dozens of matches, running the stream, possibly commentating, doing all of it again for the next tournament, and the one after that, packing all of the equipment up, and rearranging the room to be the way it was. Not running persona would really help, but the biggest help would just be having everyone support Kevin any way they can, although I can't say specifically in what way that will be. I'll be there whenever I can be, but I'll be working a 4am-noon shift every Saturday this summer so I can't say I'll be very active when I'm there. I'm also doing physical therapy for my shoulder, and I have some other new health concerns too. I'm sorry about not keeping up with the monthlies, especially after I talked so much about how I would make sure there would always be one every month, but I just needed to focus on me for a little while. I'll help any way I can and I'll try to be there, but I can't promise much more than that right now. I haven't even been practicing Persona, even with it being at Evo again this year and placing so high last year. I say just drop Persona as one of the tournaments, if only because it would save a lot of extra work for Kevin. It always had the least entrants, and no one really practiced for it. Everyone who wants to play persona (myself included) would probably just prefer to play casuals instead.
Orrax Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 Glad to hear we're getting some more tournaments before Evo! I'll try to help out as best I can.A few thoughts:Dropping Persona makes sense, but that means we'd be dropping an Evo-sponsored game. Personally, I'd like to keep it, and I'm willing to run the brackets if we need someone to do so, assuming I can make every event. Also, there are a few more people who, last I checked, still play (Carlos and Ted), but you're right that the numbers are low.Another thing to consider is that we don't have to stream these events. Setting up and taking apart the streaming equipment is a lot of work, and I think it's more important to participate in tournaments for practice than to stream them. So, I'd actually prefer dropping the streaming and the extra hassle that entails than dropping any games. That said, the streaming has been a very nice resource and I appreciate all the effort it took. But I still feel like the games are more important than the stream. But maybe Persona is expendable? I'm curious what other people think.

I'm curious what other people think. I would like to at least continue recording them because multiple people have asked for footage of their matches. Plus we already have all of the equipment, and with how much money it all costed, it would feel like an enormous waste not to use it. I'm fine with helping run persona as well if enough people want it to stay, I'm just indifferent with it right now.
nion Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 I would like to see a persona tournament, I would understand it not being a main tournament with how many people play it, but in the end people are gonna play what they want to play and nothing you can do about it, Also I would be willing to help out in anything that might be needed.
Dipstick Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 I would have no problem helping (I was pretty much running the UNIEL bracket the last couple of times as it was) -- I'm good at yelling at people for hours. :x As for why we would stream, you don't want to build your social media personal brand?!? Don't forget to like this post on Facebook. And I'm going to be That Jerk and ask if we're going to run games for Evo, maybe we should run some of the Animevo games. However, it feels like if I'm going to suggest something like that, I should also step up and offer to run them as it would be more work when there aren't enough hands as it is. So I'll volunteer to run... Aquapazza. :P and Melty Blood.
H-F Blade Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 Sorry about last weekend guys. I'll be sure not to forget my PS3 the next time there's a session at UAT. And GGs in the ranbat Luke. I'm still surprised we ended up playing Smash 4 as long as we did but it was fun albeit frustrating at times due to having played Melee religiously for a number of years. Makes me happy to not be grinding in a giant RNG-fest to unlock custom moves. I'm glad to hear that there will be some events leading up to Evo. While I do like the idea of potentially adding games that are in the Animevo lineup, I feel the biggest concern will be time constraints especially since the Animevo lineup is pretty huge. At the last monthly, Melty didn't happen so take note of potential time constraints. http://www.twitch.tv/gamingzoneaz/b/662109407 Will, do you know who was commentating with you during this set? I didn't quite catch his name at the beginning but I thought it was kinda funny that he plays the same characters I do. I'm not exactly a good source for learning but I'm always happy to share best practices of sorts with other players.
Chumaralupa Posted May 26, 2015 Author Posted May 26, 2015 I remember the last time we tried a Melty, RanBat, aka. We "tried" and it never went anywhere. PC Ranbats are a blight on god, so I don't really see the need to go through the hassle. I'm indifferent on the Persona issue, and even though I agree with Luke on the streaming question, I can understand wanting to use equipment that you spent so much on. We could replace the first tournament of each Saturday with a different AnimEVO game to get a bit of work in each, but I don't see how much help someone trying to go hard in one of those games is going to get playing a few people who might have put in 10 minutes of lab time just to be able to play in the RanBat. In some cases it could do more harm than good. Persona casuals do sound like a better idea for those who are taking it to EVO.
Bearell Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 @Orrax: Dropping the streaming equipment has honestly never crossed my mind before. It would definitely reduce the amount of work needed. However, if Ryan feels that not utilizing it would feel like a waste, then I don't mind using it as well. It also gives people the chance to review their gameplay, which some people have shown interest in. @Dippy: Adding some of the other Animevo games could be pretty fun (I happened to recently obtain something by the ominous name of Arcana Heart 3: Love Max). But as others have mentioned we will most likely be constrained on time and won't be able to run tourneys for them. But if you wanted to try to run a tourney at the end of the day for one of these games then I wouldn't mind giving the reins over to you and sticking around so you could use the equipment. And as always, anyone is welcome to bring/play any game they want throughout the day for casuals. Somehow Street Fighter 4 made it into the last monthly on someones living room tv... Currently the notions for Persona are: 2 want the tourney 2 are indifferent 1 wants bbcpex I'll give it more time to see if anyone else has their two cents to give. No one has really "opposed" the game yet, so i'm currently leaning more towards keeping it.

My commentary could do with some improvement, but i'm working on it. Quick question that's I've been interested in for a while now: Why are folks here so averted to making use of TGZ as a venue? I've been missing something, because it seems to me that i'm one of the very few here with no outstanding issue with it. o.o
TagAnarchy Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 Oh, and does anyone here play that I can play against at some point? This is one of my worst personal match-ups and I can't seem to find reliable ways around her Dolphin and Ball crap without taking huge risks.

Dipstick Posted May 27, 2015 Posted May 27, 2015 Here's a modest proposal (and not A Modest Proposal; this isn't Thanksgiving at the Death Lolita Ranch): I'm going to bring a Melty setup to the next ranbat and run something. If we get less than 8 people for it, it'll be round robin. 8 or more people and it'll be a standard bracket. I would like to start at the start of Xrd (let's be real, no one's going to want to stick around after Xrd is over), and any bracket overlap issues (hi H-F), Xrd would have priority. I would like to have someone bring another setup if possible, but I'll trudge along regardless. If someone does bring a setup, please make sure cccaster is installed with it, as it makes controller management way easier (and I also suspect that it makes the game's timing closer to arcade timing, as odd as that sounds). And if you're using a laptop, bring an external monitor so we all don't get lagged to hell and back. I know running stuff on PC can be a mess but it worked out well enough at Evo last year. I also think that someone should run GGXXAC+R, probably starting with UNIEL (and hopefully ending before Xrd starts). But someone else would need to run that. :x Yeah, that was Diego who was commentating with me at the time. My commentary could do with some improvement, but i'm working on it. Quick question that's I've been interested in for a while now: Why are folks here so averted to making use of TGZ as a venue? I've been missing something, because it seems to me that i'm one of the very few here with no outstanding issue with it. o.o Honestly, my issues would come down to space, venue fees and a general lack of control. It's kind of wack that people enter the tournaments at TGZ and then immediately have to dip to UAT for casuals afterwards as there's no place for them.
