blueNINE Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 It would be great if there were a list/calendar for live streams with GG (and BB), similar to what's on SRK. I think it would help the community to grow, and would be quite convenient for those looking to find all of the streams with GG in one place. What say you? Please?
Kurushii Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 I remember mentioning that idea to Koogy awhile back. *waits for the "no one wants to watch online BB matches streamed"*
Grendy Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 That no one wants to watch online matches mentality seems like it really kills a lot of hype for the games. I can understand that some people played for 6 months on the cabs before console release so they can't stand even the slightest bit of lag. Honestly I have no issue with that, if I had a cab near me I probably would have been going at it before console release as well. But going out and constantly putting down netplay (even if the code is bad it could easily be worse) and netplayers does nothing but hurt the community, a lot of places don't have cabs anymore hell I don't even have a legit arcade within an hour of me in any direction (chuck e cheese doesn't count). The online community really is where a lot of people are gonna get introduced to the game, after they've played for a while they may be more interested in offline play (this is how I was I played CT strictly online and with CS I've been making an hour and a half drive into michigan to play offline). This may be a bit off topic in general but I think setting up online streams will help bring players together to play competitively or even just to show non-players the game and get them more interested. Some of you might be turned off by online but you should try to keep that to yourself so you don't turn newer players or strictly netplayers away. /2cents
Kamui Moon Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 why does this have to be about online? i thought this was about scheduled streams from tournaments and the like. which is a nice feature that srk has.
A.X.I.S. Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 its about streaming in general, grendy was responding to kurushi's post. I think its a great idea on or offline but its not often done. in fact there is a few players who actually stream online and a few places that actually stream, its not often done because doing it offline takes some organization and all that jazz.
Black Onslaught Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 let's think about it > tell people when streams are happening so they don't hunt through threads and by the time they find the stream it's over and they miss makoto camaro's gdlk commentary > tell people when streams are happening so they don't have to wait 3 hours to see 1 match of BB after a SSFIV tourney yeah, let's do this.
Grendy Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 I was indeed responding to kurushi's post, I don't follow SRK so I had no idea they have a thread dedicated to announcing when streams for tournys and such are going on. Like Axis said getting an offline stream can often require a lot of time and effort to get going. At the recent michigan masters tournament they streamed SSFIV it looked like it took them quite some time to get setup and have everything going smoothly and even then they were only streaming one TV out of the 6 or so that matches were happening on (not that this made it any less hype). Anyway if we could get streams going on a somewhat regular basis I think a thread to say when they are would be awesome, but if they only pop up once every 3 or 4 months then there's no real need to do such a thing. On a side note that's still related one of our guys in the michigan scene is set up to start streaming when we get together for casuals/tourneys, hope we can get some of you to enjoy it.
shtkn Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 so about this... i'd like to get this on the main page, but i'm not sure what plugin srk uses, and i'm also sure it will use the calendar system (which no one on this site uses or is aware of). i'll look into getting the plugin.
ZONG_one Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 On a separate note: I like the calendar on srk homepage that shows events and stuff.. :[
huey253 Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 well PNW streams almost every friday around 7-8 pm. setting up streams are very difficult, and with our brand new streaming equipment, we have had some troubles getting it down perfectly. hopefully all will be fixed really soon.
Coopa Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 (edited) Well, having a schedule would be nice, especially if someone wants to promote a scene. Just something where people can list their streams for bbcs and gg on the front page would be nice. Or have a sub forum dedicated just to streaming, and whenever someone streams, they update the thread. At least that. Sometime during december, maybe in just a few days, actually, I plan to be streaming online ft10's with commentary. I will not be playing because I will lag, but I will definitely be commentating and streaming. It's part of a project I want to do. http://www.ustream.tv/channel/ipwcoopa STREAM IS LIVE NOW Edited December 12, 2010 by Coopa
Lord Knight Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 St1ckbug is streaming almost daily for about an hour or two at a time.
shtkn Posted December 25, 2010 Posted December 25, 2010 hey guys, just wanted to inform you on this i've searched for any calendar display widget for vbulletin, but the ones i found were not very good. so i asked trag to bug mr wiz to see if we can get whatever it is they use for srk's front page. i haven't heard back in a few days now, but i'll bug them again soon. if that doesn't work, then i'm aware vbulletin plans to make a calendar widget for the front page themselves at some point (whenever that is) so EVENTUALLY we'll have it one way or another. thank you for your patience.
Coopa Posted December 25, 2010 Posted December 25, 2010 I think the only way to figure out how this calendar widget thing works IS to know the people who work for SRK personally. E-mailing them is absolutely useless. Here's to hoping your efforts go farther than mine.
FunkyP Posted December 25, 2010 Posted December 25, 2010 This really good news that you guys plan to implement this. This should be a pretty big step for the DL community, appreciate the efforts.
St1ckBuG Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 I was talking to Coopa about streaming last night and this topic came up... Did you make any progress shtkn?
shtkn Posted January 10, 2011 Posted January 10, 2011 sorry, no progress. i did get to speak to mr wizard and he said the plugin srk uses was custom made and that he'll speak with the srk team and consider letting us use it, but odds are they will say no. if anyone out there would like to help me write one, please let me know
Angel Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 (edited) if anyone out there would like to help me write one, please let me know I can do php and stuff like that, but I wouldn't know how to write something as a plugin for vBulletin. Would you just need a php file that queries the streams database and displays the results so you could write it into the main page as an include() type thing? Also, do you want to make an interface so that priveleged users can modify the streams database so you don't have to do it all manually? I don't have a ton of experience, but I have coded a webpape in php which interfaced with MySQL. Let me know if you think I can help. EDIT: I poked around some more on SRK and realized the calendar feature is pretty complex. That's all built in to vBulletin right? Were you saying that the part that was custom made was just the displaying it on the front page? Because that part should be easy. Edited January 19, 2011 by Angel
shtkn Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 yes, the calendar is built into vbulletin. the widget on teh front page is custom made. In theory it should be easy, but I've run into too many headaches to count. You can see my progress on the front page, and i think i'm pretty close. I do have a question that maybe you can answer: i've created a custom field for the stream url to be placed in, but I can't seem to get it again. Looking at it from a sql viewer, the events table has a column named 'customfields' and in that column, i see a cell contains the following: a:1:{i:2;s:8:"test url";} the entire row is contained in an array $event, with each index containing the contents of one cell. how would i get to the data "test url"? i also have some css questions for another thing i'm doing, but i'll safe that for another time
Angel Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 (edited) Unfortunately I know all about things that should be easy but turn into huge headaches. I've been noticing the progress on the front page, looks like you've almost got it! a:1:{i:2;s:8:"test url";} This part really confuses me. I don't know why all that would be in a cell that should just have a url. If I'm understanding the next part then this may not matter. the entire row is contained in an array $event, with each index containing the contents of one cell. how would i get to the data "test url"? If I understand this part, then you're saying you've done something like: $event = mysql_query("SELECT etc."); If you haven't, hopefully my answer will still help you. If you have, then the thing is that the mysql_query() function returns a recordset(even if it's only one record), not an array. And you can't just retrieve a value from a recordset. The mysql_fetch_array() function takes a recordset as input, returns an array on the current record, and moves to the next record in the recordset. So, to get an actual value from a recordset you have to loop through it with the mysql_fetch_array() function. Here's how I did it, hopefully the sample code with comments will clarify everything. # this gives me my recordset $result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM `htsrc`.`news` ORDER BY `date` DESC") or die(mysql_error()); # this function tells me how many records are in the recordset, so I know how many times to loop $rows = mysql_num_rows($result); for ($i = 1; $i <= $rows; $i++){ # this gives me the array, from which I can actually retrieve values $row = mysql_fetch_array($result); # if all I wanted to do with each record is create a cell in a table containing a link which comes from a field in the record called url, I'd do something like this echo "<td><a href='$row'>LINK</a></td>"; # note the syntax for retrieving a value from an array: $arrayname[fieldname] }
Sorry if I'm totally on a different page here. i also have some css questions for another thing i'm doing, but i'll safe that for another time Ask away, I'm about as familiar with css as I am with php. I'm happy to help if I can. Edited January 21, 2011 by Angel
Angel Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 (edited) After reading your post again I realized you may have the query part figured out and actually retrieved the value of one cell. Last night I kept reading 'customfields' as 'customfield'. So, it seems like vBulletin lets you make multiple custom fields and puts them all in that same field, makes sense. I researched it a little bit, and it seems that MySQL doesn't support an array data type. But, I noticed on the event page here that the custom field is displayed. If you have access to that code you could try and see how vBulletin does that by default. Edited January 21, 2011 by Angel
Angel Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 I can see stuff happening on the front page. No luck? If you post the code you're using I might be able to help.
shtkn Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 holy shit i got it working! ok i need to sleep. please discuss how you guys want to set up who gets write access to the calendar. Should it be staff only and ppl bug the staff (mostly the mod of the event announcement fourms)? Should it be just every registered user can write to the calendar? this may make spambots even more of a threat... what are everyone's thoughts. the stuff i ahve written isn't perfect, but it should be workable. i'll discuss the limitations of the system tomorrow.
Angel Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 holy shit i got it working! lol, I see it. Awesome!
Nakkiel Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 I think you should give specific users only the privilege to write on the calender. If someone wants to be given the privilege they can PM you or a supermod.
