Edit: Mike, that article has a point, but shit-talking and talking down to people isn't going anywhere. I don't kow about FPS or RTS, but FG forums/communities will stay the same because the average age group that plays FG's is at the highschool/early college level. You're not going to get 99% of each FG genre to talk nice, let alone in front of a computer screen.

On dustloop for example, the major compaints are (and in no particular order):

1). Not being nice (and/or trolling) people who are obviously new to GG/BB. "Dustloop is just a bunch of jerks."

2). EC vs WC vs TX vs MW vs PNW shit talk. (Does PNW ever talk shit? Does anyone even care about MW? What's a Texas?)

3). "Noobs" posting really bad advice and information.

4). People mindlessly trolling, just to troll/look cool.

I remember when BB first came out and 8wayrun(?) was going to try and make another BB site because they felt a fresh start to the community would be good for BB. Then there was that whole fiasco with stealing guides etc... Before the whole thing was forgot about, I'm pretty sure there was an argument about how the DL community is just a bunch of assholes that turn away new players willing to learn. 8WR was trying to do some good but stepped on the wrong feet. They brought up a good point, but I'd say they were 50% wrong.

Most of the hate on these boards comes from the fact that a lot of the community 'hates' BB, and will therefore hate its player-base. I wouldn't be suprised if a lot of new players were turned off of dustloop because of what they read or how they're treated here. Remember Blade thread #87? Remember the string of tier-list and match-up chart threads? There are some threads that make this community look like a bunch of idiots, I won't lie, and this could all be solved by good moderating... but I won't get into that here. The sad part is, a lot of these shit threads are over and done with within the first 10 posts (sometimes even the first post), but they stay open so people can say dumb shit. Close the damn thread already?

So, #1 is mainly caused by salty 'veterans'. Solution: people just need to shutup about how much they hate BB, and mods need to crack down on random/stupid hating.

#2 I think is actually a good thing... to a certain point. Region vs. Region trash talk is good in tournament threads, but should stay out of any gameplay related threads/boards. Back when these boards were only GG, that's the way these boards seemed to run. The Espada were the laughing stock of dustloop and the shit talk around FR and EVO were the high points of every year. Lulz were had and tournaments got really hyped up... it was fucking awesome. If you took away trash-talk, you'd take away some of the hype behind fighting games. What if you told MMA and Boxing that they couldn't talk any trash before fights? Same thing applies here: there are some sports where some trash talk is actually good, and e-sports are some of them.

#3 is almost impossible to stop. You would need around the clock mods to keep these boards clean. The sad part is you'll never be able to stop this 100% because people will always be stupid, and stupid people will listen to other stupid people. Solution: make the average player smarter... (goodluck).

#4 can just be solved by havng good mods, which is out of our control.

When is comes down to it, trolling and trash talk is just a cycle that fuels itself. There have been a couple good threads that tried to break this cycle (like LK's 'ask me anything' thread), but that can only do so much. You can bring a horse to water, but you can't make it stop putting dead hookers in its trunk... right Andy?

To make DL a better site you'd have to make a few changes:

1). Make a "how fighting games work" thread, and answer any general questions about fighting games in it. This would keep really-stupid-dumb threads from popping up, which would cut down trolling. Why should anyone have to explain how mixup works? Why should someone have to break down 'mindgames'? Threads like these fuel trolling, because 90% of the people on DL know how stupid of a topic it is... why should they even be allowed to exist? Make a 50 question quiz about BB that you need to get a 100% on before you're allowed to post.

2). BAN all shit-talk from gameplay related threads/boards.

3). Make me a super-mod.

4). Make the average player less stupid.

I suppose.

And as far as the whole competitive thing goes, it won't ever make it mainstream.

There's no way they're going to put a bunch of fat fucks on a TV playing video games. Half of the current adult world would simply not understand it, or laugh it off and not even think of it as a competition. The younger half would watch it if we were lucky, and even within ourselves as a genre, fighting games are so diverse and so different. Imagine if we were given an hour spot on g4tv every day, some people would see street fighter and be automatically borified by it and never go back to see that show again, some people would see blazblue and be bored too. Football is football, they don't change the shit 5-6 times, you're ALWAYS watching the same thing with the same end goal.

So i won't even comment on how bad the community makes it self look on threads, let alone at tournaments, cussing and getting drunk in parkinglots running around with silly looking hats on chasing small mexicans.

I knew if I could outrun you for 20 seconds I'd be clear cause I remembered when I made you run in NYC to make sure we didn't miss the train... and I almost killed you cause you were about to have a heart attack.

If going "mainstream" ultimately means we can't any of the stuff Rob just described... no thx.

The point is, really gaming shouldn't be mainstream. Tournaments and shit are to have fun and dick around. It's alot of people that enjoy it in their freetime. I mean, really what the fuck do these people expect, there to be bleachers and people watching a giant projector?

And who would it ACTUALLY benefit? Top players? Does a community really think they can go mainstream and watch Justin place at almost every tournament? It's like watching football and the same team winning for 8 years, who the fuck would still watch it or bet on it?

And in the EVENT that we got it to go completely mainstream, think about every nerd that would see a tournament on tv, the first year of actual publicity would end up turning into a nightmare for organizers, we would have to more than double or triple the venue space, dqs would be ridiculously constant, the "Fans" favorite players or up and comers would never get tv/stream time.

Think about it, in the US they sold like 800,000 copies of mvc3. What if 400,000 people still play, 200,000 think they're good, 100,000 are over 18 and have some means to travel, and 25,000 live on the east coast, 10,000 have a free weekend.

Dwindle down the numbers JUST A BIT more, but imagine if we had 1,400 players at NEC because they saw a tv tournament that had someone like justin talk about it. All the SRK servers would go down from too much bandwidth usage, and we'd NEVER get a fucking tournament done. Even dwindle it down a little bit more and put it at 700-800 players. We wouldn't even be able to GET ROOMS for all these morons.

After the first massacre like that it would turn into "invite only" "capped brackets" tournaments at 256 people, and last minute players (Like me sometimes) wouldn't be able to make some of these tournaments.

And honestly, the legalities of it would start to cause issues as well. We don't have fucking gambling licenses, imagine if a lawyer took a walk around, or if we had to have police security or something, imagine all the players getting high and drunk that would get arrested, and all the illegal gambling arrests. It would be the fastest rise and fall of mainstream gaming ever, and it would have an endlessly worse outcome than us just never going mainstream at all.

I'm all for mainstreaming us if we can come out to music and cut promos like wrestling.
