bump, with a reminder that my request just needs that slightly-off-standard Vewlix-esque layout to be finished, reminder to sign and/or release the two you've already done so I can make use of them, and a reminder that I'm still putting down $$ for the first request.

Darkblade is a special case, under sections 4 and 5.

I'm still happy to help, but simply know that I can present no guarentee of it ever reaching the drawing board, even though I'll probably do it anyhow.

There are exceptions to this-

  • Making something for a local scene
  • Producing something for a tournament of any size
  • Photoshop advice and tips, as well as design theory of any kind
  • You give me money
  • You give me lots of money
  • You ever meet me in person

Also I owe for his investment and commitment to his stick project, as well as listening to my advice and following my suggestions. He's so cool I'll even put my CS2 tutorial video on hold to get him his due.

I'm kinda redoing everything in my room and was hanging up some new posters. I realized I'm missing a giant Mu poster. Were you able to find any time to finish it, Cor? I was looking at some wall scrolls on Ebay, but none of them look quite as good as the poster you showed.

C0R If I provide a .psd of one of my drawings could you make it into a desktop background for me? Lemme know if you're up to it and I'll PM you with details and the file.

I did actually, though if you find an appropriate place to have it printed let, me know, I can't find one :<

What size it? I have a Kinko's here but I'm not sure how big they print. I believe I saw a website before that printed posters as big as movie posters.

It looks like kinko's only prints up to 24"x36".

I can be downscaled anywhere, but it's base resolution is very, very large. Almost double the size of a movie poster.

I have a request for a Valkenhayn avatar fitting my size if that is fine. Anything you want to make that reflects Valk's savage side is fine. Thanks :)

Hey Cor, I have a questions. I'm actually trying to get into drawing, but I know nothing on color theory or how to color/ shading anything like that. Any book references you could link me so I could start getting some knowledge on it. I would normally be more hands on but I don't know where to start.

Request 2. Avatar please :3 (at your convenience) I'll post more information when I formulate it. At the moment I am just securing my spot :P

Ah, drawing is something I'm full of advice on, but sadly I don't think much of it applies in terms of introduction. Those "How to draw XYZ" books are actually really helpful so long as you get a good one. I learned a lot on muscle structure and organic tissue from a simple How to Draw Dragons title you could probably find at any bookstore. Just poke around in a local bookstore until you find something that interests you and that you would have fun drawing, the most important thing is that you continue practising, and if you can do a drawing a day from a book, source material that interests you is very helpful.

Oh, I can actually help with that one.

The best introductory book to drawing in general is probably Betty Edwards' Drawing On the Right Side of the Brain, which helps teach the basics of the basics of drawing, basically teaching you how to think like an artist would. For anatomy and learning the human structure, I recommend books from George Bridgman, as he's got quite the selection of books regarding anatomy. Most of his stuff exaggerates the planes in his teaching style though, which actually helps as it makes it more apparent.

I'd recommend against any tutorial books that teach step-by-step instructions, as they're not teaching you the structure or the shapes making up what you're drawing, just how to put lines down on paper. If you're interested in drawing manga, the How To Draw Manga books are probably your best bet.

As for my advice, I'd say focus on learning the anatomy and structure of whatever you're drawing first, then focus on your own stylization once you learn the basics of that. Just like in a fighting game, you can't just hit challenge mode and learn 6k combos and expect to do well in a tournament; you need to learn your fundamentals of spacing, mixup, and defense to apply the combos and actually win. In art, you need to get your fundamentals of anatomy, composition, and values before applying your own stylization.

Okay I'm done with bad metaphors now, but I think I hit my point. Also, for a good website, use Posemaniacs. Huge source of poses for you to get down gesture drawings and start to understand anatomy. Other than that, Google Image Search is your friend.

Thanks both of you :3

I have this book http://www.amazon.com/Manga-Beginner-Everything-Start-Drawing/dp/0823030830 which has proved pretty useful, because it goes over proportions and how to set up a drawing. I also have one that is similar for a more real life style. Which I haven't really touched yet, one step at a time. I feel you about the stylization, I haven't even gotten that far, I'm way to focused on my proportions atm. It still takes me about an hour and a half just to draw a face. And about 2-3 for a rather basic drawing. I think the hardest part for me is just free drawing, and I don't know if I am using that term right so I am going to define, as not using a reference picture for my drawing. Just drawing from memory I suppose.I feel like I can't understand placement or visualize it without looking at picture. Or I'm just not happy with it (I usually never am Hahah)

PS. I am going up to Washington for PAX , we still gotta do that money match Cor :3

Some notes:

Christopher Hart Books: HAHAHAH no. I've seen most of his stuff, and it's all pretty underwhelming. Honestly I just think the guy's a hack.

"Free drawing" is hard, and it's good that you're using references. Drawing without a reference is a good way to end up making mistakes and end up in poses that don't make sense. For figure drawings, Posemaniacs has a 10 minute random pose feature. I recommend using that, as it'll help you focus on your gestures and getting the basic idea of proportions down quickly. Don't worry about all the details, you just need the motion of the pose down along with the basic shapes.

Still, I can say you've got the right sense of mind to be an artist. I'm not saying you need to hate all your work, but you at least need to know where you can improve.

*shrugs* the book as has been rather helpful as a visual guide. Especially (I can't spell that word) since its very basic. It goes off on random tangents that I don't care about like how to draw monsters whatever, as far as getting form down and understanding different viewing angles (verbally and visually) and it appeals to my style of learning pretty well.

I'll have to check out that site, though, I can honestly say I still don't understand the concept of fore shortening (sp?) so that leaves me with a lot of poses that don't make sense to me at all.

edit : grammar and spelling :(
