Meet Your Mod Episode 25: Mr. Kimura

By Guest, in Home,

This week: Mr. Kimura

- Why did you choose that particular handle, is there a story or reference you'd like to explain?

Well my original name on SRK was Joe-oh-ken, which was a mix of my name and Sakura's Shouoken in Street Fighter. Then I changed it to Saikyo Joe cause I main Dan. When I joined Dustloop I was for a very short time called ViewtifulJoe, but I felt that was too much of a ripoff. Which lead to me naming (and ripping off another name) myself Mr. Kimura from Azumanga Daioh, since I love that show and wish to become a teacher when I can finally afford college. Thinking of changing it to Saikyo Joe for consistency... but you can call me Joe.
[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]
- What is your background with fighting games...Did you start with BB or are your OG like SFII?

The very first fighter I ever touched was Art of Fighting, and King was my favorite character. Then it was SFII Turbo (not Super). After that when I got a little older, I'd say about 11 or 12 I rented SFA2, SFA3, and CvS2 every weekend with my dad and playing my brother. Nothing spectacular.

I didn't get in touch with the fighting game community til the day SFIV came out, and a few months later found a link to Shoryuken.com in a SFIV guide on GameFAQs. During my tenure with SFIV I came across someone who would become a good friend of mine, LunaKage, and in playing SFIV he turned me to BlazBlue. I didn't stick with it, I struggled to do Bang's BnB in CT! A year and a day after joining SRK, and after my EVO trip and the coming release of CS I got into BlazBlue for real. Unfortunately I flip flopped with that as well a few months later... but I lingered on Dustloop and tried other games on the side of BlazBlue and met some cool people along the way.

- What competitive scene are you involved with? (Ranbats, Arcades, XBL, PSN, Reload Online etc.) Would you elaborate the benefits of this particular scene?

I have a notorious reputation with representing the SoVA scene on SRK's front page once... without actually making it out to casuals beforehand. Lets say I was very shy. But I do not "represent" a BlazBlue scene at all, my scene back in Virgina was all Street Fighter IV and Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Now I'm trying to get in touch with my North Carolina scene, but not having a car anymore due to an accident in a tunnel on the way home one night from casuals, or a job due to moving is making it hard. When I do I'll be sure to be show up and grow with the scene, that is, assuming I can stay due to "family troubles".

But my scene back in Virginia was all about tough love. Even if you were bad, they guys would at least acknowledge your heart and see you as "one of the guys". Indirectly they continued to foster my interest in fighters in general.

In terms of online, I don't play much, but I do consider myself and Xbox gamer for the most part.

- How strong do you feel your nation is as a whole, what is the next step to strengthening it?

America is competent despite everyone being so spread apart and having to rely on flimsy internet connections. I don't belive the Japanese are freaks of natures, they make mistakes too when they play and get frauded out as well. What makes them so good is consistent play. America has troubles with the "consistent play" due to the culture itself. Not everyone is within a short busride or walking distance, and the fact that arcades are no longer around to form a hub for people poses problems. Couple that with the tough economy not giving us money needed to do nice things... just is a shame.

The only way we can compensate is to look at what we have instead of what we could have. Take advantage of what we have despite Japan's options being superior. Use this site and others for your own betterment. Play when you can, and take each match as a learning experience. Make friends, and play as much as you wish to.

- Which player(s) give you the most trouble and why?

To be general I could just say the good players. But if we're talking about the character/player archetype that I struggle with most are zoners. Too much patience required. I just wanna be in there. But any player can give me trouble, especially those who feed off of my bad habits. Did I tell you how much I hate frame traps?

- What has been the most helpful tool while growing stronger in BB?

When I was playing BlazBlue, I loved videos that showed examples and explained things. I remember this one Bang video back when I picked up CT that I loved, and more recently pulsr's Mu-12 video (and now lots of others have come up). I think in general the internet has helped, cause I can find anything I want and ask questions at my leisure. With sites like Dustloop, Melty Bread, HomingCancel, DreamCancel, Mayonaka Midnight , and Shoryuken you really have no excuse for not knowing things. It really brings the community to your fingertips. Want to a ask a question? Want to find a match? Need a guide for frame data? Need match videos? Its all here on sites like these. And now you can access the internet on your smartphone? No time is better than now to be in competitive gaming.

- Is there anything you'd like to share regarding your respective character or Dustloop in general?

Well I have lots of characters that I like, and I'll claim Ms. Fortune as another. Just don't be daunted by her, and take her at your own pace. Don't get too caught up with her head, it'll be the death of you if thats all you focus on. That, and try to find a good partner in crime for her. Don't give up on her or Skullgirls (or any game for that matter) if you're having trouble. Have heart and keep at it.

As far as Dustloop, I'm gald to see this site is still going, and hope it expands. Remember the "anime" scene is small in comparsion to the Street Fighter and Marvel scenes here in the US. We need to stick together and make a name for our games. The cool thing about Skullgirls is that I see it brings both the scenes together for the most part, maybe we'll see the day Dacidbro and Ultradavid rub shoulders in a match!

Sign-up Cutoff date: May 4th 2012

General Information:
-Please try and get on earlier so Hellknight and I I know who is ready and so you can warm-up.
-Player Limit: 8 - 32 (First come, first serve. If any primary entrants drops out, the first available back up on the list will fill in)
-Singles
-Double Elimination
-Match Format: 2 out of 3 MATCHES (no character change between matches)
-Round Format: 2 out of 3 ROUNDS
-Entering this tournament will allot you points toward the Hellknight and MisterBadGuy Ranbats Rankings
-HK Ranbat points will be distributed as follows: 1st: 20 points, 2nd: 10p, 3rd: 7p, 4th: 4p, Participated: 2p.

Tournament Rules:
-2 out of 3 round matches as stated above (the in-game setting for this is 2)
-Please don't skip the intro.
-NO ---> Beginner Mode //// Unlimiteds //// Character Switching
-Astrals are OK
-No character switching during the tournament.
-Grand Finals will be 3 out of 5 matches
For those that don't understand how Grand Finals works:
Grand Finals means whoever is still in the Winner's Bracket only has to win 1 SET (3 out of 5 matches). Whoever came out of Loser's into the Grand Finals has to win 2 SETS (3 out of 5 matches TWO different times). All matches are still 2 out of 3 rounds.

Disconnect/Connection Problem Rules:
-Disconnecting forfeits that Round, start up another match and get the rounds to go back to how they were originally and then the "Disconnector" must let the other person win whatever round was at the point when it disconnected.
Ex. Player A won Round 1, Player B disconnects during Round 2. Start a new match, let Player A win Round 1 because he won it previously, and then let him win Round 2 because Player B disconnected. Match continues at 2-0.

-If the person doesn't sign back on within 5 minutes they forfeit that match. If it wasn't during the Loser's Bracket then they can still continue with their Loser Bracket match if they sign back on in time.

-If two players can't connect to each other, We will try to find someone to host for you, or we will host for you ourselves.

-If anyone starts showing constant lag through out sufficient tournaments, depending on how many report you then you will NOT be allowed to continue participating in these tournaments regardless of your location (if you do manage to upgrade your internet, test it with me and I'll let you know on my decision)

-**DO NOT COMPLAIN ABOUT LAG** - however you can report connection issues (see above)

Communication:

-Please NO mics in-game (we are trying to avoid lag here)
-I will have multiple PSN Text chats for the tournament to make communication easier amongst players (The number of Chats will depend on the number of entrants).
-Only discuss things like hosting and giving me results within the PSN Text Chat rooms.

-All discussions/results of the matches will be held in the Primary Text Chat room.
-Host Captains will be determined and dispatched to host select individuals via the Tourney Bracket
-People will be assigned to different text chats (If necessary Per Round), do not be surprised if you are ask to leave a chat to join another.
-Players in the text chat rooms will be held responsible for announcing their victory to the Text Chat host.

Match Recording/Streaming:

*Kurushii will be the Lead Streamer for this tournament, but I would like it if I could get multiple Streamers for the multiple rooms that will be hosted for this tournament. If I can get people to volunteer to stream this tournament I would really appreciate it. This applies to those who can record as well*

-I will be recording select matches during the tournament.
-If you can Record/Stream your matches, feel free, then post the links to your recordings and stream channel in this thread.
-If you want to volunteer to record/stream other matches, let Hellknight_10 or myself know.
-You can volunteer to Record/Stream matches and not participate in the tournament, if you are interested let Hellknight_10 or myself know.

N-O is coming to Sweden to participate at the Destination Showdown-tournament with players from Sweden, Russia and France. I translated this post made by him a few days ago regarding his general game plan and view on how to play Venom for the Showdown-thread at bitterharmony. I thought that I might as well post it here as well, since I've already translated it to English.

Cheers!

Enjoying Skullgirls? Want more info on the major title update? Or perhaps you haven't played the game at all because you're waiting for the PC version. Well there's a bit of good news for everyone today as a press release not only confirms that a PC version is on it's way, it will also feature multiple updates and inclusion that are absent from the Playstation Network and Xbox Live versions...at least for the time being. Both the PSN and XBL counterparts will feature the new PC additions and console specific fixes.

You can read the entire press release after the jump.

Most importantly, all matches are being uploaded including the matches that took place off stream. So far only the A block has been uploaded but we can expect the rest of the matches will be up in due time. You can also watch the videos embedded on the official BlueRevo site it self here, as well as a link to the brackets (courtesy of Kotokot) to help identify who is playing who.

Meet Your Mod Episode 24: Urichinan

By Guest, in Home,

This Week: Urichinan

- Why did you choose that particular handle, is there a story or reference you'd like to explain?

I actually came up with the name Urichinan (Ud-ee-chi-non) when I first joined Dustloop. As I was signing up I realized that I didn't have a handle, so I just started randomly punching in letters until I found one that I liked the look/sound of. And that's how I ended up with the title. However, a lot of people know me as WoZscreamer, which is an old PSN account that I shared with my brother-in-law, he named it after the band he was in (Wake of Zion) and eventually he decided to make a new account after I had added a lot of friends. Technically it wasn't even mine, but everyone had come to know me as WoZ, so I kept it. It wasn't until a few months ago that I decided to take Urichinan on as my handle.
[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]
- What is your background with fighting games...Did you start with BB or are your OG like SFII?

I've been playing fighting games since I was a little kid. The first game I ever played was Mortal Kombat 3 with my dad when I was about 3 or 4, I played it everyday until I found a new game to play, which was Soul Calibur 2 and Tekken. It continued like that for years, I cycled through all the fighting games I could find, from Clay Fighters, Final Fight, King of Fighter, Street Fighter, Guilty Gear to Soul Calibur, Tekken, Mortal Kombat, Smash Brothers, Killer Instinct, the Godzilla fighting game and more. I wanted them all. Even though I played all of these games though, I never took any of them competitively, because, well, I was a kid. I didn't find out about tournaments and competitive fighting games until I got BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger, which is what started my REAL fighting game career.

About a month into CT's lifespan I met some players named Hellknight_10, Hitoshura89, ForTheBunnies, Gran-Turismo-Man (Bolverk-GTM) and KuroNoArcana (xkurotsukix) who I started regularly talking to and playing with, and they helped me start from the ground up at becoming good at fighting games. They tought me about all the terms, how matchups worked, what the different gameplay mechanics did and how to level up my game, they also told me about Dustloop, which is how I got here. If it wasn't for them and their support (As well as others like DinDragmire, MisterBadguy, ShinSyn, LokiRamza and NeoGio0o) I wouldn't have ever reached the point that I'm at today in the competitive scene.

Now though, I only play BlazBlue/Skullgirls/Soul Calibur competitively, I tried to shift my focus to only a few games that I really loved, and just try to help the communities for those games. I'm very interested in Persona 4: Arena though, and will probably be playing that as well.

- What competitive scene are you involved with? (Ranbats, Arcades, XBL, PSN, Reload Online etc.) Would you elaborate the benefits of this particular scene?

The only scene I'm relatively active in is Rock 'em Sock 'em in Concord/Charlotte North Carolina, but due to my age, I can't attend it often. However, once I get my license I hope to travel out to more scenes in the North/South Carolina areas, and possibly start a scene of my own.

Aside from that, I'm a die-hard PSN player, that's where I spend all of my time. Sadly, it's online, and online has it's problems, but you deal with it when that's all you have.

As far as being competitive goes, I practice day and night in hopes of becoming one of the top US BB/SG players. My parents have also been very helpful with buying me equipment for tournaments and driving me out to tournaments whenever there is one that we can go to. I try to make as many tournaments as I can, but my dream is to compete in a major, or play at EVO.

- How strong do you feel your nation is as a whole, what is the next step to strengthening it?

I think the fighting game community is strong, and this has become increasingly more apparent with new sponsors and tournaments coming about lately. (Such as CBS and MLG) But there's always more that can be done to support it. (More streams, advertising, merchandise, tournaments, etc.) I think the biggest factor in growing as a community is for more players to show up at tournaments, and for people to quit being so petty when it comes to the games they want to support. For me, that's what's hurting the fighting game community the most, the fact that players don't want to accept other games into the genre, and want to stay confined to what they like the most, instead of welcoming other communities and their games. If the fighting game cummunity as whole would come together, instead of being spread apart, then I think fighting games would be one of the strongest and most competitive sports out there.

- Which player(s) give you the most trouble and why?

Nineball_Infininite, SuperKawaiiDesu, howling-_-moon, LostSoul and OmniScythe are the players that give me the most trouble. Their level of skill and understanding of BlazBlue is just frightening, and I suffer every time that I fight one of them. They're my goal, I want to be able to beat all of these players on a regular basis.

Why they give me trouble though, is because they have the perfect mix of patience and offense, something I do not have yet. My issues are that I crack under pressure, I can't handle unpredictable setups and I try to rushdown too much, which they know, and they abuse. So that's what I know I need to work on, but each of them have helped me improve my game, offering tips and practicing with me every once in a while.

- What has been the most helpful tool while growing stronger in BB?

Practice, and friends. A lot of people underestimate what good friends can help you acheive with their support. If I didn't have a good set of friends who play BB competitively, then I would never have been able to get decent at the game. They were the ones who helped me get better, and are still the ones who help me when I need to practice, or have to level up my game.

Practice is the most important aspect of getting better though, and I'm not just talking about training mode, but keeping at it with matches, and not giving up when you don't succeed. That's the worst thing you can do, give up, and it's what most players do, which is why they've never reached the level they want to be at. You have to practice, practice and practice!

- Is there anything you'd like to share regarding your respective character or Dustloop in general?

Painwheel is a tricky character, Skullgirls has only been out for a week, so there is still a ton of time for the game and Painwheel to grow. But as it stands right now, Painwheel is the highest risk/reward character there is in the game. She benefits from making the other player take an offensive approach, because she has a lot of super armor on her attacks, and she absorbs the damage she takes, then deals it back on top of her attack's base damage. Knowing this, a lot of players choose to be patient against her, which is where her heavy mixup/reset game comes in using her flight mode.

Although Painwheel has a lot of tools, resets, mixup options and good damage, she is severly unsafe and she's very slow. Her ability to approach the opponent is weak, and the range on a lot of her quick attacks are very short, making it difficult to be effective without assists.

Assists is another thing Painwheel is weak in, she doesn't have much to offer a team with her attacks, because she it primarily an airborne character. So she's at her strongest when used as a point character, with good assists backing her up.

Overall, I think Painwheel is one of the best characters in Skullgirls, but you have to focus your team a lot on what's good for her, which makes it hard to use her correctly. Aside from her complex gameplay style and odd movement, I feel that Painwheel is a very natural character for most players coming from a MvC2 or Guilty Gear scene.

Litchi though, will forever hold the key to my heart, I'll never quit playing BlazBlue because of Litchi, even once the series ends, I'll still play it, just for her. She is without a doubt, my favorite character in history.

Even though I mod a SG character, BlazBlue will always be my main game, but that's not to say Skullgirls won't always be there too.

I love Dustloop, I've been here for 3 years, and it was a dream come true the day I became a mod. (On my birthday too!) I'll always be here on Dustloop, supporting the community and players, as well as the games. I spend most of my time here answering questions and trying to provide as much information as I can, because that's what Dustloop is all about, and that's what I want it to always be about.

The only thing more fun than playing Skullgirls is listening to the lyrical beats and rhythms which ooze just as much style and personality as the game's artwork, and having famed composer Michiru Yamane helm a few tracks certainly helps as well! And now you can enjoy these catchy melodies whenever and wherever you like because the entire 28 title soundtack is now available on iTunes and CDbaby, with more platforms to comes soon (personally I'm waiting on a Playstation Network release~)
