  1. In the more recent games (i.e. the 3-D ones for the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox), you can interrupt a combo being used on you by pressing block and forward . . . kinda like a burst. In those games, there was a three per match (meaning if you used all of them your first game, you couldn't use them the second or third games).
  2. Super > Breaker > X-Ray if I read the screen right. Anyhow, it's cool that the breaker is on a gauge instead of a three-per-match deal. Honestly, the more info that comes out about this, the more it reminds me of Guilty Gear, block buttons excluded. . . . Wish I had a PS3 . . .
  3. Strange idea, but I think you can pretty much make your own matchup chart. 1. Start the game up. 2. Go to training. 3. Put both sides on CPU - Max difficulty and take off life-gain. 4. Spam select after each loss for about 10 losses. 5. Repeat for each matchup. 6. ??? 7. Profit! Of course, this depends a lot on the skill level of the computer: fyi, Pot is a frickin' beast.
  4. I played MK1 and MK3, and I currently own the three PS2 versions (why 3D?) Anyhow, I can see a block button and a run button being important for Mortal Kombat, if only because of the lack of classical input commands (i.e. 236, 623, 214). So . . . my point . . . ah, yes: Mortal Kombat is kind of a newbie's fighting game in the sense that specials are the easiest things to do, there's no resource management outside of life and combo breakers, and it's not taken as seriously competitively (which means if you find someone else who plays, chances are they won't score a flawless victory against you everytime )
  5. Damn: there goes using MK as a self-training tool for fighting games. Also, when did MK start using extra buttons for Run/Block? I played it on the Genesis with a three-button controller as a kid, so this is kinda new to me (I didn't even know you could block/run ).
  6. http://dustloop.com/guides/ggac/data/charts.html Scroll down and you'll see Guts and Gravity for each character. Guts determines how much damage you'll take from attacks once your HP starts to get low: the higher your guts, the less damage you take the closer you are to death.
  7. To be honest, the sample combos they've shown remind me of both the 2D Mortal Kombats (1, 2, and 3) and Guilty Gear. Whether it will be balanced like the latter or live up to the former is another question entirely: if they changed the combo-breaker to something like the burst guage, then it might be a good game. . . . What? Mortal Kombat was my first fighter: I have to pay due respect to my origins.
  8. Where's the new arcade going to be?
  9. Finally! Spring Break! Now I can actually play some games without being a stick in the mud! How has the turnout for Thursday been so far? A friend and I might be hitting y'all up for some rounds then. (also, what time does game night or whatever it's called start?).
  10. Yeah ... you pretty much hit the nail on the head in terms of how I typically go about playing any game (i.e. very casually). I tend to view the initial creativity and experimentation (and inevitable losses) as much more enjoyable than the resulting efficiency and consistency (and inevitable wins), which is why I also tend not to 'study' the combo threads for each character. Then again, training would help speed the experimentation process to a suitable level of efficiency: any recommendations for settings?
  11. You're right to an extent: I need another game I can beat him at, but not purely for the fact that I can beat him. It gets really annoying to know you're a better strategist being forced to 'wait' for the killing blow because he wants to deal massive damage. . . . I guess a GG analogy would be one character beating another within an inch of their life with only abare (that's the term for random-hit-damage, right?) and finishing with an IK. But I'm not worried about it: if my experience with the game itself is going to be that much of a difference, then there really isn't a point in proving my experience in general. ...Dammit: I need to stop sounding so melodramatic. Basically, I'm cool with just playing the game for the sake of playing, good music, and a good (imo: at the least it's interesting) story.
  12. @ Kamui Moon's uploads: Hmm . . . it seems as fireballs aren't my friend . . . using S/HS/Greedy is good at the right times, bad at the wrong times . . . and I need to practice avoiding tick throws, especially if I'm facing a pressure character (btw, great timing on all of the throws). Anything else you would like to add? I'd like for my next match to be less . . . bad okizeme and zoning. @ AL Thurs night fights: Damn: sounds great ($4 is great for me), but I can't make it. Anywho: any ideas how to get a friend who's addicted to TCGs into actual video game competitions? I really need a "proving ground" other than Magic or YGO (where money is a big factor) where I can actually beat my friend.
  13. No problem: I didn't think I was going to do well to begin with (lets say any illusions of grandeur tend to jinx me), so I kinda zoned out watching others play. About names: ELC and/or Epic are short for EpicLevelCommoner, and I go by either one.
  14. Why should you be sorry? It's not your fault that I can't block or tech well in any game. Plus, both games were good for getting to know the game: it seems D is different for each character, A is GG punch, and B and C are . . . something that I don't quite remember. And it was fun playing anyway. Now if I had not landed any hits on you at all . . . well, it still would have been fun.
  15. I think so: you played against the guy with "N" cap and silver PS2 controller who played v-13 and Tager in BlazBlue, right? I might have gotten names mixed up: between being my first fast-paced gaming tournament (i.e. not tcg-based) and hearing being pretty much shot, it's possible a lot of names slipped by me.
  16. Eh . . . sorry if I caused you any trouble/inconvenience: actually, I saw your message at 6a this morning and was going to take you up on your offer, but my parents basically said 'no'. It was only because of a miscommunication between my parents and myself that I was able to go. btw, congrats on the easy wins Kamui, Circ, and the other two people I played today (I forgot their names): I had to leave earlier because my ride was outside waiting. Now the business part: I really don't care that I lost badly my first time--I was frickin' amazed I got to use HOS charge burst in an actual match--but a few pointers couldn't hurt.
  17. @ doragonkoshi: something :P I will be there today. @ Circ: you make it sound like I'm a whiny noob: I'll have you know that I'm a very silent noob. Anyhow, I just got a ride this morning, so thanks for the offer dude.
  18. If I don't say anything by 11a tomorrow, I'm not going to be able to make the ranbats at AL.
  19. Depends on if I can get a ride and what shops are in the area: I'll have to see what my friend is doing this weekend and see if he's available to pick me up. And about the shops: my dad's b-day is the next day, and I decided my Jan 1st resolution would be to actually try and get gifts for my family and friends on their b-days. I plan on making it though.
  20. I have to agree with DW: Chipp can be beastly if approach an opponent with the right strategy. Also, I can't play Eddie on a pad: I don't think anyone can. I've tried seeing it would work with May's hoops and using them with her ODs, but it just seems awkward at best. btw, new line-up needed: keeping Ky and Chipp, but looking for another tank-like character due to being unable to use P.Buster right now (current pad doesn't register hc motions quickly enough: I have to tilt my thumb a certain way on the last 4 or 6 and wait until it clicks before I do the next motion, and by then I've already eaten a combo or two).
  21. Yeah, the NoKY area to be precise (closer to Ohio than anywhere in Kentucky really). And I'm just trying to get a couple of characters down so I have a few options to work with in case of crappy match-ups such as Pot vs. Bridget or Chipp vs. Pot (I haven't really had any trouble playing with Ky, but I'm sure he isn't perfect either). Thanks for reminding me that I haven't really worked on Ky at all lately: I should work on using him today.
  22. Eh...I'm not going to answer that directly, but I'll guess at what you're getting at and say I grew up playing Genesis more, my sister grew up playing Playstation more.
  23. @ milesokeefe: I'm not really gung-ho about it...I just enjoy using every aspect of a game's design, whether that's Pot's invincible backdashing or Zappa's "mamamamama" chant, to put up a good fight, win or lose. @ Circuitous: hehe friend sounds like my sister a lot. @ zdravkelja: I'm sure my friend would try it out: I think he's tried more fighters than I have, and they're mostly anime-style like Guilty Gear @ qwerty: The 3rd majority sounds a lot like my sister, though it would be nice to convince her that it's more than "use buttons, not combos" @ Blade: Good advice: I'll have to work on using dragon punches in an actual fight, but I can show her some of the more interesting aspects of the game. @ shezmu: It's not so much me wanting my sister and I to be competitive: it's that I want her to want to explore the various aspects of design that the game designer (Daisuke?) intentionally wanted to be explored. Though really, I'm just going to have to say she's a lost cause: between "it looks ancient (referring to 2D graphics)", "I can't stand anime!", and "wtf wrong with her tail lol", I think the charm just goes over her head.
  24. Top 3 Japanese 1. Momentary Life (Baiken Theme) (Something about the intro + bass line = awesome to me) 2. Pride and Glory (Kliff Theme) (Holy Orders and Writhe in Pain wish it could rock the piano/harpsichord like this) 3. Keep in Gates (A.B.A. Theme) (Reminds me of Castlevania music with an edge) HM: Holy Orders? (Robo-Ky Theme 3) (Me + HO? = moroha mode; You + HO? = most likely) Top 3 Korean (from XX#Reload Korean version) 1. Megatona Furioso (Potemkin Theme) (Heavy and slow, like Burly Heart, but much more aggressive) 2. Blacklight Babe (I-No Theme) (not as ominous as her other themes, but incredibly sexy) 3. Vortex Infinitum (Robo-Ky) (not much different from Ky's Korean theme, but I like this one a bit more) HM: Nothing comes to mind right now...
  25. I'll be honest, this is a rant venting aggravation built up while playing my sibling. I hope that I can garner some advice regarding this topic in case I run into the same problem in the tournament scene, but will understand if a mod locks/deletes this thread due to being too unrelated to Guilty Gear. Anyhow, my sibling is, layman's terms, a bullheaded scrub: she refuses to get better at any game, and even finds it in her power to ban various core elements of the game such as special moves. While I can cut her some slack with GG because she hasn't even touched the game until today (that, and I used to only use normals, so I'm familiar with them), but when she complains about me spamming knockdown normals in Mortal Kombat because I'm forbidden to use special moves, I can't help but be annoyed, (which somehow turns into smugness since she was smack-talking me). While the general consensus, from what I gather from other competitive games, is STFU OR GTFO, I feel that doesn't really help spread the sheer glory of the GG series. So, any tips on how to counteract the bullheaded-scrub mentality?
