he had a pretty good range of damage back in the old games. mostly off his ability to build the guard gauge and his combos not plummeting the same gauge. i guess someone thought it'd be cool if he did less damage but had a better version of Ryu's fake fireball.

They should of baited the DP. Why you get knocked down? This is GG, son! No random ultras or lvl3 x-factor to save you in this game. If you get hit, you deserve to lose. I think the better question is: why doesn't every character have inescapable post-knockdown damage setups, that reset in to themselves? I think, with that, GG will of truly obtained the balanced gameplay the series is often lauded for.

I'm going to be starting a new job next week, it's pretty close to xanadu. So if you can haul yourself up there, I can swing by after work and teach you whatever.
