[Xrd] News & (Theoretical) Gameplay Discussion
Coffeeling replied to Shinjin's topic in Guilty Gear General
Maybe. Though I think Ogawa is uniquely vulnerable because his style leans so much on little Eddie and Ramlethal is basically pure Eddie murder. Other Zato players seem to use Zato as a basis, Eddie as the support for their neutral game, Ogawa feels like the opposite. Kitajima got much better results after he gave up on trying to keep Eddie alive vs. LOX in those long sets they ran and mostly used him to start pressure or sporadic Nobirus. Helps give you attention resources to navigate the hell that is Ram's space control setup too. -

Was Karinchou the Ram player who gave Ogawa a ton of trouble? Speaking of which, I need more Ogawa footage in my life -

Not really. It literally hits you in the face. Not very subtle IMO. Was just going off lists here which basically all list Faust as good at least, while Eddie is more bipolar - either really amazing or kinda bad. I guess I had the impression he was placed low more than he actually was because there were three separate lists for Slash. Still, low in X, Slash, AC+R, wtfbbq in XX, #R, AC and now Xrd. -

Faust is probably the most consistent one. Seems unable to fall below mid tier. -

I just realized that Xrd does, in fact, suck. Why? It doesn't have Still in the Dark -

Uh, that's not what prerendered means. The stuff in Xrd is rendered in real time, it's not just a picture that's been rendered beforehand on more powerful hardware and then the resultant image is displayed on screen. Though the engine does render the characters separately and then flattens them into sprites which is what it used for most of gameplay to make it feel authentic. The lack of clipping is because of this process. The characters on the playfield are actually sprites most of the time. The sprites are just generated on the fly. The lack of flow in the ponytail is not prerendering. Pre-rigging might maybe be a more correct expression. A lot of the snappiness is simply the lack of tweening (short for inbetweening) which means generating the frames inbetween keyframes automatically. GG doesn't do that and just shows the keyframes because it looks more like hand-drawn animation. They've also animated a lot of stuff by hand, like Ky's cape and probably his hair too. But, again, animating by hand, not prerendering. -

MarkMan asked if they wanted him to bring sticks so I think the Xrd station is saved. -

Started watching. This is some depressing stuff to watch. Kitajima seems to be figuring something out in the later rounds, but all in all it's just ugly. Hm. Seems like he's abandoning Eddie in the neutral. Focus mental energy on navigating the hellhole that is the whole damn screen, get close and then use Eddie for pressure, but not much more. Pretty good example of why universal defenses are important - Kitajima squeezed out so much value out of air blocks and movement-related YRC use it's not funny. -

Given how they didn't fill in the inbetweens between keyframes, that should actually be possible. -

Ogawa footage? Links please o_o -
Could someone give some tips for a VSav noob who wants to learn to play Zabel? Combos/pressure strings mainly, but also engine quirks to keep in mind. I'm coming from a KOF13 background mostly.

It's not so much that they don't use Eddie (they do, and they should), it's that their game feels like Eddie complementing a Zato base, Ogawa's often feels like Zato complementing an Eddie base, which just feels really fragile for some reason.

They'd need a PS3 build for it, and from what I've heard they only have a PS4 rom, so kinda slim? -
So it's good for shooting down errant Zato-1's?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2szgewhe6BY Arc Revo Qualifiers footage. Starts with Zato stuff from the get go. Recently watched the Ogawa-Machabo(Sol) set again and couldn't help but notice how heavily Ogawa leans on little Eddie for his neutral game. There were many moments where he just used Zato's abilities instead and had a bit more control for a while. Watching these lesser Zatos that aren't complete monsters I really like how they build their neutral game around Zato and complement it with Eddie some instead of relying on Eddie and complementing it with Zato, which is how Ogawa often feels like. They feel more solid for it in some way for some reason.

If he just plays with his friends, #Reload might be the easier transition though? Not that you can go wrong with either one. -

Absolutely. The game is fun and the core is the same as in older versions. #Reload especially is quite close to Xrd (most of Xrd's character designs are based on the character's #Reload incarnation) and can be run on PC from an USB stick with no installation, even. -

This doom and gloom is hilarious. It feels a lot like people read the words "slower" and "simpler" and immediately interpret them as "snail-paced" and "made for drooling morons (who probably mash stuff and really like being rewarded for losing)". Also feels like GG is some certain mechanic and if that's not in, automatically badgame. WTF? If you look at actual footage, of which there is tons, it's plain as day that though the game is slower, it's simply so in comparison to AC+R. Overall, it's still blazing fast. The general simplification is pretty much just the RC system and special move buffering, pretty sure. Just standard stuff that makes it easier to make the game actually obey you. As someone else said earlier, you don't get macho points for failing to do things. The speed and and overall complexity of the game still mean it'll be bloody hard. Just less frustrating to get into, which is basically what any competitive game should aspire to do. Smash does it. The game is still amazingly competitive at a high level and has a ton of stuff to learn and master despite being one of the, if not the most newbie friendly fighting game ever made. As a general fighting game fan but a total GG newbie practicing stuff on #R and looking to grab Xrd if it ever lands in Europe before the world ends (unlikely), what is GG, to me? It's kickass music. It's a game that scratches that traditional ground game/footsies itch better than KOF13 does, where character matchups matter a lot more than KOF13, where the general system is a really big part of offense too. But it does that while having really strong movement and strong characters, which are things I love in KOF13. Universal systems are there to ensure stuff doesn't revolve into unwinnable territory despite the diversity. Strong characters, heavily matchup-based, free movement but more of the traditional ground game. Fast, aggressive. That's GG. Not FRCs, not FBs. (crazy)Strong characters and fast combat is. And it's still there. How did that shirt go, again? Nerf Buff Patch? Adapt. The changes are small in the grand scheme of things. Probably shouldn't entertain what seems like a troll, but Mike probably isn't "optimistic no matter how terrible the game sounds". Seems more like "Damn this game is fun to play, there's a ton of love and effort being put into it and it shows, and there's a ton of comp, this is amazing." But nah, I guess Xrd is bad. I guess I need to cancel those buy-a-console plans. -_- -
