Safetyman Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 Okay here's my story. Initially pleased my aesthetically so I tried to play her. I liked her even more after actually playing the game and seeing that her personality is like... the same as mine. However, as far as playstyle goes I ended up going with because she's fast, which I love, and for some reason I found her stuff to just work with me. I was able to beat people who actually knew how to play as her. is my sub because he's easy to use. Basically... I like his style. I try to avoid using the overused stuff though which isn't really good in the strategic long run. Also, Jin is attractive. :D But then again so is Noel and I didn't stick with her... The other two people I sometimes use are and Rachel was someone I picked early on due to her aesthetic awesomeness. However, she's pretty hard to use. I like using her once in a while for fun though. Ragna... he's easy to use and also hot. xD /stuff no one cares about. Best story I've ever read.
Niko Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 Tsubaki is the first female not really based on a sterotype, also she is BB's Order-Sol to a point Tsubaki is not just based on the valkyrie lore, she looks the part entirely -- she even transforms into one for her astral finish! Not to mention her collected, studious personality type (Noel, Tsubaki, and Makoto form the stereotypical triangle of friends seen in school settings, complete with Jin for a love interest). I personally don't mind clichés; BlazBlue does a great job at taking the familiar and adding a unique twist. But singling out Tsubaki as the pantheon of originality seems arbitrary at best.
dragontamer Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 Tsubaki has pants on. She's original. Get over it. :-p
Tari Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 Tsubaki has pants on. She's original. Get over it. :-p LOL. When originality can be determined by whether a character wears pants or not.... Too bad her pants don't actually make her outfit look better, though. She looks better without them.

Not to mention her collected, studious personality type (Noel, Tsubaki, and Makoto form the stereotypical triangle of friends seen in school settings, complete with Jin for a love interest). How is her normal outfit reminiscient of a valkyrie at all, though? I mean, she obviously has some Valkyrie influence in general, especially with her astral finish, but I don't understand why people were saying "Valkyrie" as early as when the first concept art of her came out. Wings on a hat=/=valkyrie.

Wings on a hat=/=valkyrie. Well, a hat/helmet with wings is an iconic symbol generally associated with valkyries in Norse mythology. It's just the initial connection I made when I saw Tsubaki's Continuum Shift design, and it stuck. Tsubaki has pants on. I'll give you that!

Since when did becoming a Valkyrie become a stereotype? That's pretty niche is you ask me, and I was really just reffering to Japanese/Anime stereotype: Noel = Gun-kata/Girl-with-guns and MOE Litchi = Busty Taokaka = Nekomata Rachel = loli vampire Honestly I feel that Hazama and Tsubaki are the most original members of the cast (not to say they are 100% unique, but their themes are not seen widely as much as others in the cast)
Tari Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 Well, a hat/helmet with wings is an iconic symbol generally associated with valkyries in Norse mythology. It's just the initial connection I made when I saw Tsubaki's Continuum Shift design, and it stuck. I'll give you that! I actually thought of Hermes when I first saw her design, hahaha.

It's a trait. Despite the jokes, it's not like Litchi's personality is defined by being a busty character like Taokaka is as a catgirl. Well, a hat/helmet with wings is an iconic symbol generally associated with valkyries in Norse mythology. Well, I suppose. It's just that the rest of her clothes were too strange for "Valkyrie" to stick for me.
Darlos9D Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 It should be fairly obvious that I favor massive soviet damage characters, but I've found it's a bit more complex than that. In general, I favor characters that can do the largest amount of damage in the shortest amount of time. In fighting games, this winds me up with characters like Pot and Tager, of course. It extends outside of fighting games though, in ways you wouldn't expect. Like, TF2 for example. You'd think I'd go for the Heavy or something, but instead I play classes like the Spy (lots of time waiting, short bursts of backstabby instant-death) or the Demoman (a bit less time waiting, short bursts of explody often-instant death). So basically if patience = humongous damage, then I'll play that.
Irikarul Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 Honestly I feel that Hazama and Tsubaki are the most original members of the cast (not to say they are 100% unique, but their themes are not seen widely as much as others in the cast) Personally, I see Carl as being the least stereotypical member of the CT cast. Sure, he does fill the role of being the "shota character", but I don't see him being much of a stereotype otherwise. Granted, he is the puppeteer character, but they aren't very common compared to most other types of fighters.
dragontamer Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 What? Since when did becoming a Valkyrie become a stereotype? That's pretty niche is you ask me, and I was really just reffering to Japanese/Anime stereotype: Anime Valkyrie prototype characters: 1. Valkyrie (Valkyrie no Densetsu by Namco) 2. Lenneth (Valkyrie Profile) 3. Gwendolyn (Odin's Sphere) 4. Selvaria (Valkyria Chronicles) All the above are either Valkyries, or inspired by Valkyries. Although, I'd say Tsubaki's art style is more closely related to Japan's representation of the the Medieval West, seen in games/animes in Western based settings. IE: Fire Emblem, Scrapped Princess, and so forth. Titania from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance: http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/fireemblem/images/2/20/Titania.jpeg Tsubaki also follows the "long skirt == strong will" principle as far as I can see.
Irikarul Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 If Tsubaki follows such a western design, I'm surprised they didn't just make her from a European country. They did so with Noel (Switzerland), Carl (Austria), and Rachel (Romania). Then again, Jin is apparently from England, even with a Japanese name, so I'm going to assume that Tsubaki probably came from a Nordic country of some kind, where the Hierarchical City she came from is probably situated.
dethman32 Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 I originally picked hakumen because I like samurai characters. Then when I realized he was awesome, I never looked at Ragna, Jin, or even Bang again. Bang was too hard for me to pick up and Ragna and Jin seemed a little too generic to me. Plus I've never seen a fighting style like Hakumen's before.

Granted, he is the puppeteer character, but they aren't very common compared to most other types of fighters. Carl fits into the Creepy Child stereotype. His character design on the other hand looks really unique to me, top hat and all. Tsubaki also follows the "long skirt == strong will" principle as far as I can see. This is the first time I hear of such a principle, but I think you might be on to something here! It's eerie how I can't think of one character where this rule doesn't apply.
dragontamer Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 At this point, Tsubaki's design isn't so much to represent their country of origin, but instead the principles that characters with similar designs had before her. Take Selvaria and Titania. They are veteran warriors (Selvaria being an elite unit serving directly under Emperor Maximilian, and Titania being 2nd in command and most experienced of Greil's Mercenaries). IIRC, all of them (including the other Valkyrie inspired characters I mentioned) are loyal to the point of death, honorable and experienced. This is the first time I hear of such a principle, but I think you might be on to something here! It's eerie how I can't think of one character where this rule doesn't apply. I read too much tvtropes. It wasn't my idea.
Strider Chipp Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 I chose my main simply because of my name Strider Chipp. I mostly play with ninjas like for example chipp, bang, and Strider hiryu. Mostly characters with speed and rush down types. Sometime character who I can related to in personality, but ninjas are mostly what I'm interested into. I chose my subs base off interests.
g.Bauer Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 Honestly I feel that Hazama and Tsubaki are the most original members of the cast (not to say they are 100% unique, but their themes are not seen widely as much as others in the cast) Hazama is Evil MJ. That's one of the reasons I'll main him xD
Iguz Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 I looked around for the manliest man in the game, and what i came across was Bang who's manliness just blasted out of the screen.
Soothesayer Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 Is it just me, or do "Girls with Guns" have to wear blue and have blonde hair? Seras Victoria, Rosette Christopher, and now Noel Vermillion. Well, obviously not all of them wear blue, but many of them are blonde. Mireille Bouquet (Noir), Rushuna Tendo (Grenadier), hell, even Vash the Stampede (Trigun) is blonde (not a "Girl with gun", but definitely Gun Kata)Well this is my take on it personally: I think it has to do with guns being associated with western culture(cause WE LOVE US SOME GUNS! plus the whole cowboy thing, whose influence is seen in some of these archetypical characters, examples being Vash and JoJo's Hol Horse) and Japan seems to have this thing where westerners or westerner-inspired characters are generally portrayed with blonde hair and many times blue/green eyes. Not all the time mind you but enough to where blonde hair and blue/green eyes = uber westerner. Put the two together and there you go, your blonde haired gun totting archetype. It seems like when they aren't wielding guns they're either knights or wrestlers. Or Nazis.
Tari Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 I looked around for the manliest man in the game, and what i came across was Bang who's manliness just blasted out of the screen. This is a good reason to choose a main.
DarkChildOfLight Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 Arakune for Spirited away. Rachel for the funny stuff she says in english and she sounds fun in Japanese. Hakumen for ease of use.
Almadiel Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 I go for the twisted characters first, they are usually the most interesting. I also gravitate toward defensive/reversal type characters, not a fan of rushdowns and long combos.
Dragonslayer9 Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 Ragna: Easy to use, nice combos and aggression Hakumen: I just think he is bad ass Tager: Same as Hakumen, his English voice is just epic.
Senaro Highwind Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 Well, when I first started, I was like "Oh, Tao is so adorable! I want to use her." So I ended up trying to use her for a while, until one day I was just playing with random characters against my brother. I ended up picking Tager because I loved being able to punch someone and send them completely across the screen, and watching them skid along the ground.
