Mikachiru Posted September 28, 2009 Posted September 28, 2009 Table of Contents: 0: Introduction I: Why a study group? II: How is this gonna work? III: I can't join the CCSG because you don't have a X-box 360... IV: Everyone's so much better than me! What do I do!? V: Whose joining? 0: Introduction Alright, I think it's time for a study group. In order for noobs (and pros, no matter how perfect they claim they are) like me to become better at using Carl, we need to use our resources effectively, namely these forums (unlike the BB: General discussion forum which is starting to look like GameFAQs...). So, unless Kyle thinks this is a stupid and pointless thread, this thread is up for us to use; noob and pro alike. I: Why a study group? What's wrong with just playing online with random people? Well, nothing's wrong with random fights or anything but really how many Carls are you going to get to play? I think Carls are pretty rare to find (especially most people like to be a bunch of jerks and spam ice-car) so we should probably gather as many Carls up as possible and learn from each other and we can use PSN chat (or whatever XBL has) to critique. As a group, I think we should work together to improve our skills. II: I HATEZ LAGZ!! How is this gonna work? We can try to set things up by location (though I fought Gimpt, who was on the east coast and had little-to-no lag even though I'm in Hawaii). I.E: From Hawaii to central and central to east coast can be two groups. Also, for those who don't know... Pacific time: Three hours ahead of HI Mountain time: Four hours ahead of HI Central time: Five hours ahead of HI Eastern: Six hours ahead of HI So, if you want to know the times someone's going to be on, find the difference between where you're at and your Carl peer. III: Oh noes! I can't join the CCSG because you don't have a X-box 360... I'll try to work something out with the other Carl players and see if they want to help out. Hopefully, someone will help me out with this... Until then, TBA. IV: Everyone's so much better than me! What do I do!? Practice, practice, practice. Apply what you learned in our session and practice it offline. Then come back and correct your mistakes or re-enact what you saw. Catch your mistakes early before they become a habit. Don't be discouraged if you didn't win once after 42 matches because there's no such thing as wasted effort. V: Whose joining? For now, I'm not sure. First I need to see whose interested and who thinks this is a waste of time. If your interested in joining, say so here and leave your tag on here so I can find where you are and what we need to work on. bjholmes2 Posted September 28, 2009 Posted September 28, 2009 I would like to join this study group. Xbox Live GT: bjholmes2 in Powder Springs, GA
Prophet Posted September 28, 2009 Posted September 28, 2009 Defiantly interested, I think this could help me out a lot. I'm a pretty bad Carl player but I think working with some like minded people could help out a lot.
bjholmes2 Posted September 28, 2009 Posted September 28, 2009 Xbox Live GT: bjholmes2 in Powder Springs, GA A Tager main looking to find a fun sub. I have almost no experience with Carl, so I look forward to finally learning a second character!
Zoogstin Posted September 28, 2009 Posted September 28, 2009 I'd definitely be down to help anyone who wants to improve their Carl game. But I'm definitely not big headed enough to say that I won't learn from any of you guys as well. ^_^ Just to let you know, I never know when I'm going to be online until that moment. So if you see me online in BB holla at me. But sometimes I'll go 2 weeks straight without playing due to school or another fighting game.
Mikachiru Posted September 28, 2009 Author Posted September 28, 2009 Yah, this is off to a good start! Where's all the PSN people...?
Zoogstin Posted September 28, 2009 Posted September 28, 2009 By the way, I don't have a mic, but I can talk to people on AIM while we play.
Mikachiru Posted September 28, 2009 Author Posted September 28, 2009 By the way, I don't have a mic, but I can talk to people on AIM while we play. That's fine. I don't know much about the X-box, but I'm guessing there's no chatting feature...?
Zoogstin Posted September 28, 2009 Posted September 28, 2009 You can message people but its horribly inefficient for detail conversation.
Mikachiru Posted September 28, 2009 Author Posted September 28, 2009 You can message people but its horribly inefficient for detail conversation. I see. This might be a problem for XBL people who aren't near a computer...
bjholmes2 Posted September 28, 2009 Posted September 28, 2009 You can also plug the headset that comes with the 360 into the bottom of your controller. Viola!
Mikachiru Posted September 28, 2009 Author Posted September 28, 2009 You can also plug the headset that comes with the 360 into the bottom of your controller. Viola! A headset comes with the 360...? I did not know that. Even if I had one, I most likely wouldn't use it since it'd be easier to tell I'm a girl (which is something I want to avoid so guys don't go easy on me...). Anyway, I think the XBL people should be fine, unless someone lost their headset or something...
Mikachiru Posted September 29, 2009 Author Posted September 29, 2009 Oh I see, the only mirror matches that I ever get are people who seem to have picked Carl on a whim and never know what they are doing. While I on the other hand can't even ground loop properly, Alle~can and kara IAD are still hard for me to do and I can't even do some of Nirvana's inputs consistently. The thing is that I know what I'm doing and how properly do it, it's just that I'm not very good at it. I saved all the replays of my matches with DJ Kyu and I'm gonna watch them later for reference. Which inputs are those? I'll help you when the CCSG gets set up. XD Xbox Live GT: bjholmes2 in Powder Springs, GA A Tager main looking to find a fun sub. I wanna fig- ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffuuuuuuuu~ You don't have a PS3...

Are you playing on stick or pad? Carl's a bit more costly to play as, since you pretty much have to get a stick And you WILL be losing a lot at first, unless you play absolute scrubs.

4Corners Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 That would be anyone that plays Carl. You always have to be on point. I've lost matches to terrible players just because I got lazy for a little bit.

4Corners Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 Nah. When I lose to Jin, it's because I hold up+back to block vs him, and I either forget to fd the 5d, or I forget to block low. Autopiloting defense with Carl is baaaaaad. The character I lose to most often when played by scrubs is Ragna. I just fall for stupid things sometimes, lolol. HIS STANDING OVERHEAD REACHES INTO FOREVER!
Prophet Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 Which inputs are those? I'll help you when the CCSG gets set up. XD Yah, a Tager! I wanna fig- ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffuuuuuuuu~ You don't have a PS3... It's mostly just getting 623 ]D[ consistently, like I mentioned before I am pretty bad at fighting games in general, and I've always had trouble with shoryuken inputs. When that is coupled with negative edge, it's hard to do without thinking about it. I probably just need more practice. Are you playing on stick or pad? Carl's a bit more costly to play as, since you pretty much have to get a stick And you WILL be losing a lot at first, unless you play absolute scrubs. I play with a stick, I've had it for maybe four month's. I like to think that I've gotten used to it but I tend choke on inputs for 632146C pretty often.
4Corners Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 Thank god. Okay, first thing to remember with BB combos: SLOW DOWN! Seriously, I can play Melee at ridiculous speeds without dropping combos, but when it comes time to do Carl's loop and I'm pumped up, the #1 reason I drop it is because I get too excited and do things a little too fast. Slow down with everything. Even allecan is really slow, once you get used to it. Once you acknowledge just how slowly you input things in this game vs GG, SSBM, or even SF4, you'll find that you're hitting combos a lot more. Aside from that, practice practice practice. My trick for doing srks is to press forward, return the stick to neutral, and then do a fireball motion. Works every time.

That sounds like that's exactly what my problem is, most of the time whne I choke on an input, it's because things are getting really intense. I'll try that out, thanks!
4Corners Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 Yeah. I started listening to The Beatles and doing deep breathing during/in between matches. No joke, it helps a lot. ALSO For allecan, I found the easiest way to reliably do it is to do a sort of tk motion Like j.2c xx 2147c, 1c is how I do the basic set-up.

ALSO For allecan, I found the easiest way to reliably do it is to do a sort of tk motion Like j.2c xx 2147c, 1c is how I do the basic set-up. I'll have to try this out as well. I just played a few matches and the srk motion tip you gave me really helped a lot. I think part of my problem is that the fighting game I play the most is Vampire Savior, and since I play Anakaris, I'm used to throwing out inputs like the fist of the north star. Taking all these tips in tonight and I'll try to get Carl's basic ground loops down. I've tried before and I was never able to get the timing right.
4Corners Posted September 29, 2009 Posted September 29, 2009 Prophet, we can play when I get home tonight. Prolly wont be for long, but still, I luuuuuuuurrve Carl dittos.
