The Blacktastic Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 (I don't know if anyone's posted something like this, but I was just thinking about this.) At least, that's what I think. The Guilty Gear series never gets any major hype (but it should), as opposed to major fighter series such as Street Fighter, Soul Calibur, or Tekken. Just as the Street Fighter IV hype is over (came out around February, right?), Accent Core+ is released about a couple of months after. But I see no release parties or tournaments at major video game retailers like I did for Capcom's world-renowned fighting game. Today, I played Accent Core with KamuiMoon, and we talked about why GGXX isn't really that popular in the US. >.> I'll try and paraphrase what he said: "Many people just see Guilty Gear as just another anime fighting game, when they don't really [take a chance to] understand the depth of Guilty Gear." I, for one, agree that Guilty Gear XX (especially Accent Core) has a lot of depth to its fighting system. It takes skill to keep up with the fast pace and split-second timing of attacks and cancels, all while anticipating what your opponent will do next. One mistake--one random Burst, Taunt, missed Overdrive Attack -- can spell KO for your character. Is Guilty Gear better than aforementioned fighting games? Well, I can't really say for sure. Truthfully I think it all depends on the person's personal preference with video games. But people should at least give the GGXX series a chance. EDIT([10/16/09]): I'm glad that my thread actually gave people something to think/talk about. :3 EDIT([11/27/09): ... Yeah. Someone changed the thread name... ah well, I guess it's all good, seeming as the topic veered from "Why is GG so Unpopular?" to "MY JOHNNY CAN KICK YOUR JOHNNY'S ASS!" ._.
qwerty Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 valid points across the board, but i think the biggest reason gg receives so little hype is because we don't have an established group of players that always make top 8. there's no daigo vs wong or yipes vs sanford that gets the game's name out there. bb kinda has that with mikez and heartnana, which is one reason i think it'll be (and is) the arc community's sf4. still, <3 gg and hopefully the scene will stay around for as long as possible.
The Blacktastic Posted October 15, 2009 Author Posted October 15, 2009 But to us GGXX followers, BlazBlue just isn't enough. There's just so many flaws and exploits with the game. Sure it looks pretty, and there's some variety in the characters... but there isn't enough. I mean, we can only hope Continuum Shift will fix these problems, but it'll never be GuiltyGear. Maybe it's just me complaining, but many other people feel the same way. D:
excelence Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 I'm also feel the same, but BB ain't GG and the system introduced there is still very raw compared to the many revision GG has, just be patient with it or go back to GG
Hurricane22491 Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 I think the fact that GG is only on past-gen consoles now is also a factor. A lot of people who are just casual gamers with their 360 or PS3 go into the store and don't even look at the PS2 shelves anymore.
ajinkris Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 don't even look at the PS2 shelves anymore. More like baskets of used crap. Yet, I saw a used GGXX going for 20 bucks. True story. None can hide the game's quality, even past all these years.
danceljoy Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 Simple: Guilty Gear is in 2D (Street Fighter is a well known franchise so it's given that it'll have a hype). Most younger/immature/casual gamers(based on observation)think that a 2D fighting game genre will only be upgraded only if it's made into 3D. "Everything will be better with 3D graphics..." I know a bunch of people who can't tolerate the graphics of Guilty Gear don't even give it a chance when I introduce it to them. Also, it's an anime-styled fighting game that hasn't even released an anime film/series/OVA.
Hi-C Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 GG isn't going to be well recognized since people won't take the time to look at how indepth and complex the system is. I mean, what was it, gametrailers or something that did a review on fighting games. Guilty Gear came in at some number and they said complex combos and featured Baiken landing 3-hits. 3-hits=complex? WTF. I was pissed man. I talked to a friend of mine and we discussed the complexity of Street Fighter (his favorite) to mine (GG). GG is more complex in the long run because of the features that it has over SF. A) that turns people off since they apparently can't handle it/don't want to. B) GG isn't advertised in any damn way in America. I became a GG fan by sheer luck of seeing Isuka and thinking the art was badass. C) BlazBlue has more fans. :P

WTF. Exactly what I'm talking about. Not even companies like GTTV or GameInformer really think highly of Guilty Gear XX. GI, in one of their issues, rated Accent Core+ a 7/10, -_- Like they do with almost all games that have an anime-feel to it. (Tales of the Abyss/Vesperia for example.) "Everything will be better with 3D graphics..." I know a bunch of people who can't tolerate the graphics of Guilty Gear don't even give it a chance when I introduce it to them. That's their loss. I know a lot of people who quickly judge a game just by how it looks, and you and I can agree on the fact that they're missing out. :P "Everything will be better with 3D graphics...?" ._. Yeah, false statement, indeed. Just look at GG2:Overture.

TGS Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 The biggest reason why GGAC is considered "underrated" is because it didn't have a huge promotion machine for the game in the United States as opposed to Street Fighter 4, BlazBlue, and Tekken had. It's big in Japan, but in America the game pretty much had to rely on "word of mouth" promotions for it to grow.
Hi-C Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 i mean everyone likes tekken and soulcalibur.americans just dont play arcade games anymore>.< Americans just have bad taste in games.
Chrome Homura Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 This is just my POV, but from my personal experience with trying to get people into GG, the biggest reason most people won't play it is it's high learning curve. When starting out at the game, you'd pretty much have to be playing a gold character to have any chance of winning against someone who has but the slightest amount of experience over you. This problem is compounded practically 100 times over for me, having been playing XX for like 2 years now (I'm too lazy to order AC online despite my intense desire to play competitively, we were damn lucky to find XX and/or even Isuka used as it was) Granted my ability with most of the cast compared to my mains is exponentially less, but I still know all of the characters' basic tactics, and understand the physics and game mechanics so well that it is damn near impossible for me to not just utterly destroy anyone who wants to try to play it with but the slightest effort. It just takes far more practice to get even somewhat good at GG than the average person cares to invest time in. Also, there's no fighter like GG (well, now there's Blazblue, but nobody in my area has played it yet) it just doesn't function anything like mainstream games that most are familiar with. Hell, gameplay wise I'd almost go so far as to say the only similarity GG has to other fighters is it's 2d status. Toss the "Anime factor" in on this, and it's not hard to see why the game that has a loyal, but admittedly quite small following. (when compared to other fighters, anyway)
bucklemyshoe Posted October 17, 2009 Posted October 17, 2009 .i dont even know if i can call anyone there a gamer.all they play is games in which you hold down the r button. I play DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou with R1 Mapped.

"Americans are lazy gamers" is probably a more accurate observation.
Effenhoog Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 It's all my fault, most things I like just seem to end up unpopular. Sorry guys.
EternalLurker Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 So....does that make this into yet another problem which violence (in this case towards Effenhoog) can easily solve?
DandyStepper Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 I think we need to make a propaganda thread where we all say things good about guilty gear like how we are the most active community.....in the forums. And how we have the best teachers.....in the forums. And how we always fight for GG to be in tournaments....in the forums. Also we have the most heated dramas....in the forums. GG the forum game. GG players we type soo hard.
